[1] Hocus-pocus sounds magical, doesn't it? And the word comes from the world of magic playing in Medieval (中世紀(jì)) Europe. In the dictionary Longman Dictionary of Contemporary English, hocus-pocus is explained this way: a method or belief that you think is based on false ideas, e.g.He thinks psychology is a lot of hocus-pocus.
[2] I'm afraid this explanation isn't as interesting as the sounding of the word itself. But then again, the dictionary I mentioned is a dictionary for beginners. One can't expect much from it when it comes to such an interesting word as hocus-pocus.The Merriam-Webster dictionary online, on the other hand, gives a more detailed explanation:(1)sleight of hand;(2)nonsense or sham used especially to cloak deception. And it gives the origin of the word: probably from hocus pocus, imitation of a Latin phrase used by magicians.
[3] This explanation gets to the basic nature of hocus-pocus--exotic(外來的) but meaningless talk by the magician to fool the audience.Watch any magician at work and we'll notice that he sometimes talks constantly while performing tricks, using hocus-pocus, such as ear-catching words, eye-catching hand or body movements, to distract(分散) our attention while he gets a trick done.
[4] Hocus pocus reveals the nonsensical nature of the magician's talk on stage. And it was introduced into the English language probably just on the strength of the rhyming sound of it.Hocus-pocus, lovely.
[5] Well, knowing its origin which is from performing magicians in Europe, I'm sure you will find hocus pocus easier to remember. You'll also learn where to put it into use.

[1]Keeping a busy social life among lots of friends may keep people slimmer than spending hours on a treadmill, according to scientists. They say that socializing and meeting with friends helps boost levels of ‘brown fat’ in the boby which burns calories to generate heat.
[2]Living in a stimulating, social environment was found to reduce abdominal fat in mice by half over four weeks, even if they ate more. US researchers say that social stimulation can
by converting white fat into brown, White stores calories and makes us fatter, while brown burns energy to generate heat .Converting white fat into brown is difficult, as we all know, normally requiring long term exposure to cold conditions or activating part of the body’s nervous system
[3]However, scientists from Ohio State University now think that having a busy social life is an even more effective way of changing white fat into brown, The team came up with their theory by studying the effects of various living environments on mice. Those who lived alongside a greater number of mice and had more space and toys to stimulate them lost far more weight over the course of the study than their ‘couch potato’ ones.
[4]Study author Dr. Mattew During, whose team’s findings appear in journal Cell Metabolism said: I’m still amazed at the degree of fat loss that occurs. Explaining how new technology had threatened face-to-face socializing, he added: ‘It’s not just a sedentary lifestyle and high calorie foods, but an increasing lack of social engagement.’
[5]Co-author Dr. Lei Cao said: ‘Loneliness is a profound factor for cancer and death; it’s on par with cigarette smoking. Social engagement is very important’.

[1] Teenagers who spend hours in front of the television may have a poorer diet as young adults, a new study suggests. It's not clear, researchers say, whether television itself is the reason, but it is possible that things like snacking(吃零食) in front of the TV or seeing ads for junk food influence young people's diets.
[2] The study included nearly 1,400 high school students. It showed that those who watched TV for five hours or more everyday had less-healthy diets than their students five years later. As a group, they ate fewer fruits and vegetables, but ate more fast food, snack products and fried foods.
[3] "We're not able to tell why," lead researcher Dr. Daheia J. Barr-Anderson said. "But we do have some speculations." People who spend a lot of time in front of the TV, especially teenagers, may have more snacks. It may influence their long-term diet quality. It's also possible that TV ads for fast food, sweets and snacks make teenagers eat more of those foods. TV time might also replace exercise time for some kids.
[4] The researchers found a clear relationship between TV time during high school and diet quality of the young. The heaviest TV viewers , and those who'd watched fewer than two hours everyday had the most fruits, vegetables.
[5] According to Barr-Anderson, the findings support experts' advice that children should watch no more than two hours of television everyday. "Parents should cut the TV time," Barr-Anderson said. She advised that parents set a good example by eating right, being physically active and controlling their own TV time.
