How to Set Goals

Whether you have small dreams or high expectations, setting goals allows you to plan how you want to move through life. Some achievements can take a lifetime to attain, while others can be completed in a day.1.

●Determine your life goals.Ask yourself some important questions about what you want for your life. What do you want to achieve: today,in a year,in your lifetime? The answers to this question can be as general as "I want to be happy,"or "I want to help people."2.

●Set specific goals.Be specific and realistic about what it is that you want to achieve.Research shows that setting a specific goal makes you more likely to achieve it.3.For example,"Be healthier"is too big and vague to be a helpful goal."I want to eat more vegetables, and I want to run a marathon."is better.

●Write out your goals.Be detailed,be clear, and include your steps.4.Keep your list in a place where you can get informed frequently. This will help keep you motivated.

5.You may find yourself set in your ways concerning broad life goals, but take the time to re-evaluate your smaller goals. Are you accomplishing them according to your timeline? Are they still necessary to keep you on track towards your larger life goals?Allow yourself the flexibility to make some small changes to your goal.

A.Adjust your goals.

B.Track and measure your progress.

C.Having deadlines will keep you motivated.

D.Consider what you hope to achieve in 10,15,or 20 years.

Dear Editor,

I’m a middle school student naming Li Ming. I’m writing to tell you something. Recently I’ve notiecd many of my classmates often to go to the cyber cafe (網(wǎng)吧) near our school. The other day I went here, too. I was surprised to see many students played computer games, seeing films or chatting. Some students were even talking about love affairs online. On my opinion, cyber cafes should be a place which we can find much useful informations. Internet should be a window to the outside world rather than a place for games. Internet is good if we make good use it. Otherwise, it will do us great harm. So the local government should take measure to make sure that students use cyber cafes positive.

Chuck Berry, the man often called the “father of rock and roll” is still performing at 85. Another music great, Smokey Robinson, has described Chuck Berry as “the inspiration for all of today’s rock 'n' roll guitarists." And, Anthony Kiedis calls him “a musical scientist who discovered a cure for the blues.”

On stage, he became known for his wild performances, and his “duck walk” that many musicians copied. But his songwriting skills—some call him a rock and roll poet—and his guitar work really set him apart. Early in his career he played mostly blues for black audiences in clubs in St. Louis, Missouri. But the most popular music in the area was country. So this musical scientist mixed country and blues.

Chuck Berry was born on October 18th, 1926, in St. Louis, where he still lives. His mother, Martha, was a high school principal. He was born the fourth of six children. He started singing in church when he was six years old. His interest in music stuck with him.

A lot of Chuck Berry's material is about teenage life, especially school. Chuck Berry and two friends were arrested after they used a gun to steal a car. He was released from prison four years later. But that would not be the last of his legal problems over the years.

Filmmaker Taylor Hackford made a documentary called “Hail! Hail! Rock ‘n’ Roll,” named for a Chuck Berry song. It centered on the making of a concert to honor the musician on his sixtieth birthday in 1986. More than seventy-five artists and bands have done their own versions of Chuck Berry songs. Many have done several, including the Rolling Stones, Elvis Presley, Conway Twitty and Bruce Springsteen.

1.Which of the following makes Chuck Berry different from other musicians?

A. Wild performance and duck walk.

B. skills of creating songs and guitar work

C. Duck walk and skills of creating songs.

D. Guitar work and wild performance.

2.According to the text, Chuck Berry ________.

A. was influenced by the education of his mother

B. wrote most of his songs that reflected his teenage life

C. show his musical talent at an early age

D. didn’t have legal problems after he became a successful musician

3.What can we learn from the text?

A. Chuck Berry had a lot of music used in filmmaking.

B. Chuck Berry is also interested in performing in movies.

C. Chuck Berry had a concert to celebrate his sixtieth birthday.

D. Chuck Berry has a great influence on many musicians.

Persuasion is the art of convincing someone to agree with you. According to the ancient Greeks, there are three basic tools of persuasion : ethos, pathos, and logos.

Ethos is a speakers’ way of convincing the audience that she is trustworthy, honest and reliable. One common way a speaker can develop ethos is by explaining how much experience or education she has in the field. After all, you’re more likely to listen to advice about how to take care of your teeth from a dentist than a fireman. A speaker can also create ethos by convincing the audience that she is a good person. If an audience cannot trust you, you will not be able to persuade them.

Pathos is a speaker’s way of connecting with an audience’s emotions. For example, a politician who is trying to convince an audience to vote for him might say that he alone can save the country from a terrible war. These words are intended to fill the audience with fear, thus making them support him. Similarly, an animal charity might show an audience pictures of injured dogs and cats, to make the viewers feel pity. If the audience feels bad for the animals, they will be more likely to donate money.

Logos is the use of facts, statistics, or other evidence to support your argument. An audience will be more likely to believe you if you have convincing data to back up your claims. Presenting this evidence is much more persuasive than simply saying “believe me”.

Although ethos, pathos, and logos all have their strengths, they are often most effective when used together. Indeed, most speakers use a combination of ethos, pathos, and logos to persuade their audiences. So, the next time you listen to a speech, watch a commercial, or listen to a friend try to convince you to lend him some money, be on the lookout for these ancient Greek tools of persuasion.

1.Why does the author say persuasion is an art?

A. They both demand full attention from the audience.

B. They both entertain the audience.

C. They both require great skill to achieve.

D. They were both common topics of ancient Greek writers.

2.How is a speaker able to show her ethos to the audience?

A. By using beautiful language to make her statements attractive.

B. By showing her knowledge and experience relating to the topic.

C. By expressing her sympathy with the audience.

D. By telling the audience about her personal preference.

3.What can we learn about the three aspects of persuasion?

A. Honesty is the key to making your arguments believable.

B. Ethos is the most important aspect of persuasion.

C. Political leaders mostly use ethos to persuade their audience.

D. Each aspect has a different effect on the audience.

4.An advertisement for washing powder which claims “Our powder kills 95% of all bacteria.” It mainly used_________.

A. ethos B. pathos

C. logos D. a combination of all three

科目:高中英語(yǔ) 來(lái)源:2017年全國(guó)普通高等學(xué)校招生統(tǒng)一考試英語(yǔ)(全國(guó)卷1精編版) 題型:閱讀理解

A build-it-yourself solar still(蒸餾器) is one of the best ways to obtain drinking water in areas where the liquid is not readily available. Developed by two doctors in the U.S. Department of Agriculture, it’s an excellent water collector. Unfortunately, you must carry the necessary equipment with you, since it’s all but impossible to find natural substitutes. The only components required, though, are a 5' 5' sheet of clear or slightly milky plastic, six feet of plastic tube, and a container— perhaps just a drinking cup — to catch the water. These pieces can be folded into a neat little pack and fastened on your belt.

To construct a working still, use a sharp stick or rock to dig a hole four feet across and three feet deep. Try to make the hole in a damp area to increase the water catcher’s productivity. Place your cup in the deepest part of the hole. Then lay the tube in place so that one end rests all the way in the cup and the rest of the line runs up — and out — the side of the hole.

Next, cover the hole with the plastic sheet, securing the edges of the plastic with dirt and weighting the sheet’s center down with a rock. The plastic should now form a cone(圓錐體) with 45-degree-angled sides. The low point of the sheet must be centered directly over, and no more than three inches above, the cup.

The solar still works by creating a greenhouse under the plastic. Ground water evaporates (蒸發(fā)) and collects on the sheet until small drops of water form, run down the material and fall off into the cup. When the container is full, you can suck the refreshment manfen5 out through the tube, and won’t have to break down the still every time you need a drink.

1.What do we know about the solar still equipment from the first paragraph?

A. It’s delicate. B. It’s expensive.

C. It’s complex. D. It’s portable.

2.What does the underlined phrase “the water catcher” in paragraph 2 refer to?

A. The tube. B. The still.

C. The hole. D. The cup.

3.What’s the last step of constructing a working solar still?

A. Dig a hole of a certain size. B. Put the cup in place.

C. Weight the sheet’s center down. D. Cover the hole with the plastic sheet.

4.When a solar still works, drops of water come into the cup form .

A. the plastic tube B. outside the hole

C. the open air D. beneath the sheet
