【答案】
We are supposed to be grateful to people who are always there with us because they are the charming gardeners who make our souls blossom.
My English teacher is such a great soul, to whom I owe many thanks. During the previous study, my biggest flaw must come to carelessness, which worried me a lot. To make matters worse, I was too anxious to seek the fundamental reason for my failure. I just dedicated myself to huge amounts of practice, regardless of repeated mistakes. Fortunately, my teacher noticed it and offered to have a long talk with me. Having been persuaded to change my attitude, I finally got the right way to rid myself of carelessness and gained confidence as well.
I am grateful to my English teacher for all the support he has given me, which has made me stronger and a better person.

Most children in the United Kingdom have access for computers in their classrooms. Since the computers are strict for education purposes, they do not contain any games. Books remains the greatest source of knowledge. And we have to move with the times. For teaching English and other languages, computers are excellent, because many of the software using for writing highlight wrongly spelt words or incorrectly structured sentences. This is helps children to learn a language faster and much easily. In this sense, a computer is better than the tradition blackboard. I think, since the use of computers has to controlled, a blend (混合) of the computer and the blackboard would be a best way to teach children.

【題目】Everyone knows about straight-A students. We see them frequently in TV situation comedies and in movies like Revenge(報(bào)復(fù))of the Nerds. They get high grades, all right, but only by becoming dull laborers, their noses always stuck in a book. They are not good at social communication and look clumsy while doing sports.
How, then, do we account for Domenica Roman or Paul Melendres?
Roman is on the tennis team at Fairmont Senior High School. She also sings in the choral group, serves on the student council and is a member of the mathematics society. For two years she has maintained A’s in every subject. Melendres, a freshman at the University of New Mexico, was student-body president at Valley High School in Albuquerque. He played soccer and basketball well, exhibited at the science fair, and meanwhile worked as a reporter on a local television station. Being a speech giver at the graduation ceremony, he achieved straight A’s in his regular classes, plus bonus points for A’s in two college-level courses.
How do super-achievers like Roman and Melendres do it? Brains aren’t the only answer. “Top grades don’t always go to the brightest students,” declares Herbert Walberg, a professor of education at the University of Illinois at Chicago, who has conducted major studies on super-achieving students. “Knowing how to make the most of your innate(天生的)abilities counts for more. Much more.”
In fact, Walberg says, students with high IQ sometimes don’t do as well as classmates with lower IQ. For them, learning comes too easily and they never find out how to get down.
Hard work isn’t the whole story, either. “It’s not how long you sit there with the books open,” said one of the many-A students we interviewed. “It’s what you do while you’re sitting.” Indeed, some of these students actually put in fewer hours of homework time than their lower-scoring classmates.
The kids at the top of the class get there by mastering a few basic techniques that others can readily learn.
【1】What can we conclude from the first paragraph?
A. Most TV programs and films are about straight-A students.
B. People have unfavorable impression on straight-A students.
C. Everyone knows about straight-A students from TV or films.
D. Straight-A students are well admired by people in the society.
【2】Some students become super-achievers mainly because_________.
A. they are born cleverer than others
B. they work longer hours at study
C. they make full use of their abilities
D. they know the shortcut to success
【3】What will be talked about after the last paragraph?
A. The interviews with more students.
B. The role IQ plays in learning well.
C. The techniques to be better learners.
D. The achievements top students make.

【題目】Will you be playing some music at work?
Music is particularly popular in the medical profession, especially among surgeons(外科醫(yī)生). A recent survey shows that 90% of surgeons in the UK put music on the sound system in the theatre during operations. Plastic surgeons(整形外科醫(yī)生)play the most music; it appears that ear, nose, and throat specialists the least.
But it isn’t only in surgeries(外科手術(shù)) where music is popular. In another recent survey, one-third of the 1,613 people said they listen to music while working. And 79% of them said that humming(哼歌)along improves their job satisfaction or productivity.
Is listening to music at work a good idea? Yes, say the experts. Many surgeons say that music helps to create a “calm atmosphere”, and a third of them added that it avoids getting bored! Also, listening to music raises the levels of a brain chemical that can help people focus. Office workers say it improves job satisfaction. Several studies suggest that it’s also good for hospital patients. Those listening to music through headphones during surgery require less anesthetic(麻醉劑), up to 50% less in some cases, and recover more quickly afterwards. “Sure, music reduces anxiety before surgery,” says Zeev Kain, an anesthetist at Yale University.
So, what type of music should we be listening to? Surgeons from the previous survey preferred rock, pop music and classical. And hip-hop is popular too. However, whatever the kind, it appears that self-selected music is the best choice. Pennsylvania State University research showed that when people chose their own music there was more stress reduction(下降). And other researchers found that when listening to self-selected music, surgeons did the maths faster and more accurately than when they were listening to music chosen for them.

【題目】Engineers should embrace(接受) the arts,Sir John O'Reilly,a fellow of the Institution of Engineering and Technology, argued in a lecture.
About 59% of engineering companies in the IET's 2014 survey feared skill shortages could threaten(威脅) business.
"There is nothing as creative as engineering," Sir John told the reporter. He says science, technology, engineering and mathematics - often known as "Stem" subjects, are vital for a modern knowledge economy. But there is a massive shortfall in the number of recruits(招聘) - with a recent study by the Royal Academy of Engineering saying the UK needs to increase by as much as 50% the number of Stem graduates it produces.
Delivering this year's Mountbatten Lecture at the Royal Institution,Sir John argued that engineers should recognise the role of the arts in their work - among other benefits; this could attract more people into the profession. The lecture,Full Steam Ahead for Growth, advocated a wider adoption -- Steam,or science, technology, engineering, arts and maths.Engineers should embrace the arts as being key to creativity and an important component of innovation(創(chuàng)新),crucial to creating new products and boosting future competitiveness,he argued. "Engineering and technology is an increasingly diverse and creative field," said Sir John.
Some university engineering departments already cooperated with art schools to develop understanding,he told the reporter. In particular he mentioned Cranfield University's Centre for Creative Competitive Design and Imperial College's work with the Royal College of Art.The two sets of people could work well together and more emphasis on the creative side of engineering could improve the success of products,he said.
"Aesthetics(美學(xué)) is part of it," he told the reporter, adding that Apple's iPod was not the first digital media player, nor the only one that worked - but it came to dominate the market "because it was nice to have".
Sir John said he was not suggesting universities started requiring A-level art from engineering applicants - the key subjects for admission would continue to be maths and the sciences. But an emphasis on creative skills would help "broaden the pool and attract more people in".

B. stress the importance of marketing
C. stress the importance of communication
D. stress the importance of science and technology
【4】Which of the following is true according to the passage?
A. More university students should study arts instead of engineering.
B. Engineering and technology is increasingly different and unrelated fields.
C. The IET's skills survey raised concerns about the number of recruits to engineering.
D. Students from some university engineering departments have already transferred to art schools
【5】What is the passage mainly about?
A. Lack of creativity makes it difficult for the engineering major to find a satisfactory job.
