When sevenyearold Sky Nockels learned that black rhinoceroses (犀牛) were an endangered species, he decided to do something to help them. He raised money to adopt (收養(yǎng)) a black rhino named Imara at the Great Plains Zoo in South Dakota. By adopting Imara, Sky helps the zoo take care of the rhino’s needs, such as food and a good habitat.
Sky has been a summer camp member at the Great Plains Zoo since he was three. There he and other kids learnt about the animals and did projects for them. “We made juice drinks for the bears,” says Sky. “They enjoyed them.”
Now that Sky is older, he is playing an even more active role in the care of the animals. Since black rhinos are one of Sky’s favorite animals, he decided to adopt Imara first. “I adopted a Grevy’s zebra named Demani, too, for my little brother Alexander,” he says.
Sky raised money to help care for the animals he wanted to adopt. He promised to raise $75 for his rhino and $25 for Alexander’s zebra. To earn the money, Sky and his grandfather planted a vegetable garden. Sky planted seeds (種子), watered, and cleared the grass. When the time came, he harvested the vegetables and sold them in front of his parents’ store.
When Sky’s friends heard about this, they brought vegetables from their parents’ gardens to sell, too. With the help of his friends, he earned enough money to keep his promises.
Sky is one of the youngest people to adopt an animal at the Great Plains Zoo. He cares about the animals and plans to plant and sell vegetables again this summer to help them. “I hope other children do something to help animals, too,” he says.

For 80 years, Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade has kicked off the holiday season with glorious bands, balloons and floats (花車),and for one day, it has transformed New York City into a living comic book.
The Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade is an annual parade presented by Macy's Department Store. It was first held in 1924. It was organized by Macy's employees, most of whom were first generation immigrants(移民),who wanted to celebrate holidays like they did in Europe. One tradition long gone is the releasing of the balloons after the parade. They would float for days and the lucky finder or finders could claim a cash reward if he or she returned the balloon or its remains to Macy's.
The parade has gone on every year except during World War Ⅱ when, aside from not having much to cheer about, the helium(氦氣)air and rubber used for the balloons
When the parade returned in 1945,it was televised in New York for the first time and also traveled its current route for the first time.
Nowadays, more than 10,000 people participate in the parade and the National Broadcasting Company(NBC) will nationwide broadcast it live from 9 a.m. to noon. The NBC has even earned several Emmy Awards for this program.

It was unusually quiet in the emergency room on December 25. I was the nurse on duty that day. I didn’t think there would be any patients, sighing about having to work on Christmas. Just then five people showed up at my desk, a pale woman and four small children.
“Are you all sick?” I asked.
“Yes,” she said weakly and lowered her head.
But when it came to descriptions of their problems, things got a little unclear. Two of the children had headaches, but it seemed that their headaches didn’t cause any suffering. Two children had earaches, but only one could tell me which ear was affected. The mother complained of a cough but seemed to work to produce it.
Something was wrong, but I didn’t say anything but explained that it might be a little while before a doctor saw her. She responded, “Take your time; it’s warm here.”
When I checked the form they filled out, there was no address—they were homeless. I looked out at the family gathering close together by the Christmas tree. The little one was pointing at the television and saying something to her mother. The oldest one was looking at something on the Christmas tree.
The nurses on duty felt pity for this family just trying to get warm on Christmas. We planned to prepare a meal for our Christmas guests. We needed presents. We put together oranges and apples in a basket. We collected from different candies and other things available that could be presents. Our team worked to meet the needs of a family who just wanted to be warm on Christmas Day.
Later, as the family walked to the door to leave, the four-year old came running back, gave me a hug and whispered, “Thanks for being our angels today.”

A new study suggests that the more teenagers watch television, the more likely they are to develop depression (憂郁) as young adults.
The researchers used a national long-term survey of adolescent health to survey the relationship between media (媒體) use and depression. They based their findings on more than 4,000 adolescents who were not depressed when the survey began.
As part of the survey, the young people were asked how many hours of television or videos they watched daily. They were also asked how often they played computer games and listened to the radio. Media use totaled an average of five and one-half hours a day. More than two hours of that was spent watching TV.
Seven years later, more than seven percent of the young people had signs of depression. The average age at that time was twenty-one. The researchers say they did not find any such relationship with the use of other media such as movies, video games or radio, etc. But the study did find that every extra hour of television meant an eight percent increase in the chances of developing signs of depression. Young men were more likely than young women to develop depression given the same amount of media use.
Last December, a popular magazine published a study of activities that help lead to happy lives. Researchers from the University of Maryland found that people who describe themselves as happy spend less time watching television than unhappy people. The study found that happy people are more likely to be socially active, to join in outdoor activities and to hang out with friends.
【1】 We can learn from the survey that ______.
A. computer games are teenagers’ favorite
B. teenagers enjoy watching TV very much
C. newspaper is not included in the survey
D. most teenagers prefer to listen to the radio
【2】 What can we know from Paragraph 4?
A. Movies and video games may cause depression.
B. Less than 7% of the young people became depressed.
C. An increase in television watching raises the risk of depression.
D. Young women had higher chances of becoming depressed than young men.
【3】According to the passage, what can we conclude?
A. Teenagers should not watch television any longer.
B. Teenagers play more video games instead of watching TV.
C. Teenagers should be active in taking part in outdoor activities.
D. Teenagers should be more active in reading magazines and newspapers.

【題目】
Let's say you want to hit the gym more regularly this year. How do you make that happen? Consider putting the habit loop to use.
Here's how it works:
A habit is a 3-step process. First, there's a cue, something that tells your brain to operate automatically. Then there's a routine. And finally, a reward, which helps your brain learn to desire the behavior. It's what you can use to create—or break habits of your own.
Here's how to apply it:
Choose a cue, like leaving your running shoes by the door, then pick a reward—say, a piece of chocolate when you get home from the gym. That way, the cue and the reward become interconnected. Finally, when you see the shoes, your brain will start longing for the reward, which will make it easier to work out day after day. The best part? In a couple of weeks, you won't need the chocolate at all. Your brain will come to see the workout itself as the reward. Which is the whole point, right?
【1】Which of the following best fits in the box with a “?” in THE HABIT LOOP?
A. Pick a new cue.
B. Form a new habit.
C. Choose a new reward.
D. Design a new resolution.
【2】What's the purpose of putting the habit loop to use?
A. To test out different kinds of cues.
B. To do something as a habit even without rewards.
C. To work out the best New Year's resolution.
D. To motivate yourself with satisfactory rewards
【3】“This year when I see the Harry Potter poster, I will read 30 pages of an English novel or an English newspaper in order to watch TV for half an hour." What is the cue in this resolution?
A. The Harry Potter poster.
B. Reading 30 pages of an English novel.
C. An English newspaper.
D. Watching TV for half an hour.
