10.For people with thousands of pages to read, speed reading seems like a manna (甘露) from heaven. In addition, speed reading helps lighten the load of information you have to absorb since it provides a filter that you can use in screening all bits of information before you approach them.
(71)FExamining how much information you need will help you identify how you should read a certain document to maximize your learning and comprehension.Thorough reading may no longer be necessary in some cases, such as when you only need an outline of a certain document.
Another skill that can ease the burden of a reader is the ability to read words in blocks.Make sure you do not spend too long on a certain block.(72)BThis will also make reading less tiresome and boring.
To master this important skill, you have to practice reading more and more words in a certain block at one time.A suggestion shared by some experts regarding this step is to increase the distance between you and the document you are reading. If you can read more and more words in one block, you can cut down on the time it usually takes you to read a certain text and you will be able to read more in a shorter period.
Readers should also practice reducing the number of times they go back to previous sections or blocks.Using a pointer such as the tip of a pencil or pen can also help to make the flow of your reading smoother and faster.(73)AThus,your speed in reading will largely depend on the speed of the movement of your pointer.
If you still find yourself confused about the topic even after you have finished reading the document,do not re-read right away.Re-reading immediately will just lead to slower speed in reading.(74)CGetting your own reading corner will also help.
(75)DContinue practicing and practicing the techniques aforementioned and soon, you'll achieve the reading speed that will work best for you.

A.In this technique, your eyes will follow the tip of the pointer.
B.This saves time and reduces the effort that you have to make.
C.Taking a short break first is recommended before reading the material again.
D.As a final note, the most important point is consistent and deliberate practice.
E.Your invaluable time can be saved if you can have your reading speed doubled.
F.The first step to increase your reading speed is to identify the specific information you need.
G.Reducing the time you spend on a specific number of words in a block will make no difference.

Examining how much information you need will help you identify how you should read a certain document to maximize your learning and comprehension"檢查你需要多少信息將幫助你確定你應(yīng)該如何閱讀一個(gè)特定的文檔,以最大限度地提高你的學(xué)習(xí)和理解能力,可知提高閱讀速度的第一步要知道你需要什么信息.故選F.
72.B. This will also make reading less tiresome and boring."
73.A. 故選A.
74.C. Re-reading immediately will just lead to slower speed in reading"立即重讀會(huì)導(dǎo)致閱讀速度慢.
Continue practicing and practicing the techniques aforementioned"要持續(xù)練習(xí)上述的技術(shù),可知,最后一條建議是要一致和深思熟慮的練習(xí).

5.Knots are the kind of stuff that even myths are made of.
In the Greek legend of the Gordian knot,for example,Alexander the Great used his sword to slice through a knot that had failed all previous attempts to unite it.Knots,enjoy a long history of tales and fanciful names such as"Englishman's tie,""and"cat's paw."Knots became the subject of serious scientific investigation when in the 1860s the English physicist William Thomson (known today as Lord Kelvin) proposed that atoms were in fact knotted tubes of ether(醚).In order to be able to develop the equivalent of a periodic table of the elements,Thomson had to be able to classify knots-find out which different knots were possible.This sparked a great interest in the mathematical theory of knots.
A mathematical knot looks very much like a familiar knot in a string,only with the string's ends joined.In Thomson's theory,knots could,in principle at least,model atoms of increasing complexity,such as the hydrogen,carbon,and oxygen atoms,respectively.For knots to be truly useful in a mathematical theory,however,mathematicians searched for some precise way of proving that what appeared to be different knots were really different-the couldn't be transformed one into the other by some simple manipulation(操作).Towards the end of the nineteenth century,the Scottish mathematician Peter Guthrie Tait and the University of Nebraska professor Charles Newton Little published complete tables of knots with up to ten crossings.Unfortunately,by the time that this heroic effort was completed,Kelvin's theory had already been totally discarded as a model for atomic structure.Nevertheless,even without any other application in sight,the mathematical interest in knot theory continued at that point for its own sake.In fact,mathematical became even more fascinated by knots.The only difference was that,as the British mathematician Sir Michael Atiyah has put it,"the study of knots became a special branch of pure mathematics."
Two major breakthroughs in knot theory occurred in 1928 and in 1984.In 1928,the American mathematician James Waddell Alexander discovered an algebraic expression that uses the arrangement of crossings to label the knot.For example,t2-t+1or t2-3t+1,or else.Decades of work in the theory of knots finally produced the second breakthrough in 1984.The New Zealander-American mathematician Vaughan Jones noticed an unexpected relation between knots and another abstract branch of mathematics,which led to the discovery of a more sensitive invariant known as the Jones polynomial.
