I read a letter of a mother of a gifted child to an expert with gifted children stating that her son was always complaining that he doesn’t like his teacher for she talks in baby language and she lets them sing baby songs. Having an insufficient(不足夠的) understanding of being different from their normally developing classmates, gifted children may find themselves wanting to learn more than being boxed with other kids of their age. They want to quench(解渴) their thirst for knowledge. However, in the process, they tend to develop negative(負(fù)面的) thoughts about school and teachers. Thus, they tend to exhibit behavioral problems.
Behavioral problems of gifted children could be mainly correlated(相關(guān)的) to their asynchronous(不同步的) development. This development means that the child has uneven(不均衡的) development in their mind, body and emotions. To explain further, a gifted child may live in different ages at once. He may show high intellectual(智力的) capabilities at some point but the time his emotions rule, he would go back to his true age going through tantrums(脾氣發(fā)作) and endless sobbing(哭泣). He maybe find it happy playing with kids his age but the next day, he would be bored with that and he would find conversing with older kids to be more challenging.
Because of high intellectual level, a gifted child often acts differently in his own classroom. He has the thinking of being above from the rest of his classmates when it comes to grades, academic awards and school recognitions. In classroom discussions, the child may be very cooperative(合作的) having advanced knowledge in the lessons but it is mostly that he will suffer from boredom as he is not challenged by the lessons and he would feel no improvement with them.
小題1:Which of the following best explains the asynchronous development?
A A child has good development both in mind and body.
B A child cannot get along well with his classmates.
C A child is intellectually developed but not equal with emotionally.
D A child doesn’t feel happy with his school and teachers.
小題2:What is most likely to be talked about in the paragraph following the passage?
A How a gifted child gets along with his classmates.
B How to get a gifted child involved(被卷入) in a classroom discussion.
C What can arouse(激發(fā)) a gifted child’s interest.
D How a teacher should handle a gifted child in class.
小題3:We can infer from the passage that ______.
A we needn’t pay special attention to gifted children
B a gifted child is well above others in every way
C it’s best to teach a gifted child separately
D teaching a gifted child can be challenging

Can people change their skin color without suffering like pop king Michael Jackson? Perhaps yes. Scientists have found the gene that determines skin color.
The gene comes in two versions, one of which is found in 99 per cent of Europeans. The other is found in 93 to 100 per cent of Africans, researchers at Pennsylvania State University report in the latest issue of Science.
Scientists have changed the color of a dark-striped zebrafish(斑馬魚) to uniform gold by inserting a version of the pigment (色素) gene into a young fish. As with humans, zebrafish skin color is determined by pigment cells, which contain melanin (黑色素). The number, size and darkness of melanin per pigment cell determine skin color.
It appears that, like the golden zebrafish, light-skinned Europeans also have a mutation (變異) in the gene for melanin production. This results in less pigmented skin.
However, Keith Cheng, leader of the research team, points out that the mutation is different in human and zebrafish genes.
Humans acquired dark skin in Africa about 1.5 million years ago to protect bodies from ultra-violet rays of the sun (太陽光紫外線), which can cause skin cancer.
But when modern humans leave Africa to live in northern latitudes, they need more sunlight on their skin to produce vitamin D. So the related gene changes, according to Cheng.
Asians have the same version of the gene as Africans, so they probably acquired their light skin through the action of some other gene that affects skin color, said Cheng.
The new discovery could lead to medical treatments for skin cancer. It also could lead to research into ways to change skin color without damaging it like chemical treatment did on Michael Jackson.

Every pet owner loves his pet. There is no argument here.
But when we asked our readers whether they would clone (克隆, 復(fù)制)their beloved animals, the responses(反應(yīng)) were split almost down the middle. Of the 228 readers who answered it, 108 would clone, 111 would not and nine weighed each side without offering an opinion.
Clearly, from readers’ response, this is an issue that reaches deeply into both the joy and final sadness of owning a pet. It speaks, as well, to people’s widely differing expectations over the developing scientific procedure.
Most of the respondents who favored the idea strongly believed it would produce at least a close copy of the original; many felt the process would actually return an exact copy. Those on the other side, however, held little hope a clone could never truly recreate a pet, many simply didn’t wish to go against the natural law of life and death.
Both sides expressed equal love for their animals. More than a few respondents owned “the best dog/cat in the world”. They thought of their pets as their “best friend”, “a member of the family,”“the light of my life.” They told moving stories of pets’ heroism, intelligence and selfless devotion.
Then the loss is so disturbing---and the cloning so attractive. “People become very close to their animals, and the loss can be just as hard to bear as when a friend or family member dies,” says Gary Kowalski, author of Goodbye, Friend: Healing Wisdom for Anyone Who Has Ever Lost a Pet. “For me, cloning feels like an attempt to turn death away…It’s understandable. Death is always painful. It’s difficult to deal with. It’s hard to accept.”
But would cloning reduce the blow? This question seemed to be at the heart of this problem.
小題1:So far as the cloning of pets is concerned, a recent survey shows that, of all pet owners, ____.
A.a(chǎn) lot more of them are for it
B.a(chǎn) lot more of them are against it
C.very few of them are willing to tell their opinions
D.a(chǎn)bout half of them are for it and the other half against it
小題2:While talking about the respondents from the readers, the expression “final sadness of owning a pet” refers to ____.
A.the death of one’s pet
B.the high cost of owning a pet
C.the troubles one has to deal with in keeping a pet
D.the dangers about the cloning of a pet
小題3:From what Gary Kowalski says, we can know that he ____.
A.has never thought about the problem of cloning
B.is going to write another book on pets
C.is in favor of the idea of cloning pets
D.is all against the cloning of pets
小題4:What is the key question at the heart of the problem of cloning pets?
A.Can cloning make the pain one suffers less when a pet dies?
B.Can pet owners afford the cost of cloning?
C.Does cloning go against the law of nature?
D.How reliably does cloning produce an exact copy of one’s pet?

Why should I teach my children history? That sounds like a stupid question to even ask. But, as I hear different home schooling teachers discuss history, I get the idea that there may be different reasons for teaching history.Let me briefly explain the three good reasons for studying history and two bad reasons for studying history.
The major reason I see for studying history is that we can learn from the past.I am convinced that the world would be a much better place if more people understood the successes and failures of the past and the things that made these successes and failures. However, as the unfortunately true statement goes "the one thing we seem to learn from history is that we don't seem to learn from history". Perhaps at least in teaching history, to my children I can do a small part in changing this.
A second major reason for studying history is that it is hard to understand the current political climate in the absence of an understanding of its historical context. We can’t even understand why we are and where we are without history, much less (更不必說) try to figure out where we are going or how we should get where we want to be.
I teach my children history, for one more reason.I purchased a set of historical audio (錄音機(jī)) tapes for our children. My seven-year-old son listened to them over and over.It was my hope that he would become inspired by the accomplishments of people like the Wright brothers to accomplish things by himself.I think that it is good that we celebrate the accomplishments of people like Martin Luther King Jr.if, in doing so, young people are called on to stand for the principles that he stood for and accomplish what he accomplished.I also think that by studying people like Adolph Hitler, people can learn to stand against the things that he stood for.
小題1:What message can we get from the underlined sentence in Paragraph 2 ?
A.Many people aren't clever enough to learn well from the past.
B.Many people fail to make good use of history and make the same mistakes.
C.Many people feel it hard to understand history.
D.Many people have no interest in studying history.
小題2:In Paragraph 3, the author shows that history is useful because _______________.
A.It makes the current political situation go smoothly
B.It helps us realize the importance of historical events
C.It helps us understand why things are the way they are
D.It helps people accept the present situation where they live
小題3:Some historical figures are mentioned in the last paragraph to show ______________.
A.People can be inspired to do good, while also learning to fight against evil
B.People may also learn from bad historical figures
C.More celebrations should be held to honor their achievements
D.Today’s people can also achieve what they achieved
小題4:What would be talked about in the following paragraph?
A.How to teach history effectively.
B.Some negative reasons for studying history.
C.How to get more people to study history.
D.Some bad historical figures.
小題5:The main purpose of this passage is to ____________.
A.inspire the parents to teach their children history
B.show the importance of history in politics
C.explain the reasons why children study history
D.introduce the writer' s own way of teaching history

Good sportsmanship occurs when teammates, opponents(對手), coaches, and officials treat each other with respect. Kids learn the basics of sportsmanship from the adults in their lives, especially their parents and their coaches. Kids who see adults behaving in a sportsmanlike way gradually come to understand that the real winners in sports are those who know how to keep on trying and to behave well - whether they win or lose a game.
Parents can help their kids understand that good sportsmanship includes both small gestures and heroic efforts. It starts with something as simple as shaking hands with opponents before a game and includes acknowledging good plays made by others and accepting bad calls gracefully. Showing good sportsmanship isn't always easy: It can be hard to congratulate the opposing team after losing a close or important game. But the kids who learn how to do it will benefit in many ways.
A child who bullies or laugh at others on the playing field isn't likely to change the behavior when in the classroom or in social situations. In the same way, a child who practices good sportsmanship is likely to carry the respect (尊重) and appreciation of other people into every other aspect of life
The best coaches - and parents - encourage their kids to play fair, to have fun, and to concentrate(專心于) on helping the team while improving their own skills.
小題1:The most important feature of good sportsmanship is ______.
A.respecting others.B.concentrating on winning
C.improving one’s own skills.D.beating the opposing team
小題2:Which of the following is NOT the behavior of good sportsmanship?
A.Shaking hands with opponentsB.Playing on the field like heroes.
C.Praising good playing of othersD.Accepting unfriendly viewers’ opinions
小題3: As a child with good sportsmanship, he / she will ______.
A.treat winning as the most important thing.
B.be proud of the success of his / her team
C.look down on others’ playing skills.
D.not get discouraged when defeated
小題4:It can be inferred from the passage ______.
A.a(chǎn) child who bullies others can’t play well on the field.
B.the real winners are those who play with best skills.
C.a(chǎn) child with good sportsmanship behaves well in society
D.it is simple and easy to show one’s good sportsmanship

A lazy Susan is an addition to a table that is designed to assist in moving food from one person to another while dining. This is achieved through the use of a turntable (轉(zhuǎn)盤), which usually moves the food in a circle when it is pushed by those at the table. In this way, the food never has to be picked up and passed around the table. Instead, it remains in place on the lazy Susan.
A lazy Susan may also be a part of a kitchen cabinet (櫥柜). In this sense, the lazy Susan is a type of shelving unit within the cabinet that is able to turn around its axis(軸心) . One may turn the lazy Susan in order to find certain goods in storage. From the outside, a lazy Susan appears to be two cabinets that are located at a right angle (直角) to each another. When one of these cabinets is pushed, however, both doors move and the lazy Susan is revealed inside.
It is believed that Thomas Jefferson invented the lazy Susan in the 18th century, though it was called “dumbwaiter” at that time. It is said that Jefferson invented the lazy Susan because his daughter complained she was always served last at table and, as a result, never found herself full when leaving the table. Others believe that Thomas Edison was the inventor, as he is believed to have invented the turntable for his phonograph (留聲機(jī)). The turntable may have developed into the lazy Susan later.
Regardless of who invented it, it wasn’t until 1917 that the term “l(fā)azy Susan” was used in an advertisement for the invention. In Britain, however, the term “dumbwaiter” is still used rather than “l(fā)azy Susan”. The reason for the naming of it is still a mystery. One theory is that it was named after either Jefferson’s or Edison’s daughter, both of whom were named Susan.
小題1:What is a “l(fā)azy Susan”?
A.A waitressB.A convenient toolC.A tableD.A cabinet
小題2:According to those who believed Thomas Jefferson invented the lazy Susan, _______.

A.the lazy Susan can work by itself
B.the lazy Susan was named after Thomas Edison’s daughter
C.how the lazy Susan got its name remains unknown
D.the lazy Susan was invented in Britain
小題4: The writer wrote the passage mainly to _________.
A.discuss how the lazy Susan was named B.teach us how to make a lazy Susan
C.introduce Thomas Edison’s inventionsD.tell us what a lazy Susan is and its origin
