Clothes can make phone calls, play music, dial your pal's number, keep you warm during cold
weather and operate your computer.
This is not a fantasy. A British company, called electrotexiles, has created a wide range of
clothes-clothes tha have minds of their own ! Scientists, working for the company, have invented a kind
of fabric that can be mixed with flexible electronic materials to create intelligent clothing. The results are
electronic garments.
If you think the weather has to be wired to different devices, think again. These designer clothes are
wirefree, soft to touch and washable! Like any electronic device, these hightech clothes have to be
powered. Currently, a tiny ninevolt battery serves the purpose. But the researchers hope that in the near
future the clothes will generate electricity by using body heat. These clothes are 100% shockproof, they
say.
The electrotexiles team has also created the world's first cloth keyboard. These keyboard can be
sewn into your trousers or skirt. To use this device, you will have to sit down and tap on your lap! These
"laptap" devices are all set to take over laptop computers!
Another useful garment is the shirtcummobile phone. This handy invention enables drivers to chat
comfortably with others at the wheel! Other popular electronic wears include the denim (牛仔布) jacket
with flexible earphones sewn into the hoop and the electronic ski jacket with a builtin heater. The ski
jacket is also programmed to send signals to a satellite. This technology is known as global positioning
system and can be used to track lost skiers and wandering kids.
Having completed the cloth keyboard, scientists have already started to work on a new project-a
necktie that can be used as a computer mouse. What is the next? Do you have any idea?
1.The electronic garments are similar to other electronic devices in that ________.
A. they feel smooth and soft
B. they use electricity as power
C. they can be washed in water
D. they are made from flexible materials
2.How will researchers improve these hightech clothes?
A. Body heat will be used as power.
B. The wearer will not get shocked.
C. A tiny ninevolt battery will work.
D. They will get charged automatically.
3. The main purpose of the text is_______.
A. to advertise for an English company
B. to predict the future trend of the products in the company
C. to show how rapidly science develops
D. to introduce some intelligent (智能的) clothing in the company
4. It can be inferred that the author's attitude towards the company is _______.
A. negative (消極的)
B. casual
C. optimistic
D. doubtful

People with had health customs or habits have a much greater chance of suffering serious diseases and needing costly medical care, but good habits, such as a program or physical exercise, appear to protect health.

The most of the patients who were in the hospital for a long time and who faced high medical costs were persons who were overweight, who smoked heavily, or who drank too much alcohol. Persons with such bad habits faced at least a 50 percent greater than normal chance of needing costly hospital care. The smokers usually had lung or blood vessel disease. The heavy drinkers had liver or nerve disease. And those who were overweight had heart disease, or diabetes (糖尿病).

A program of physical exercise improves the body’s ability to dissolve or melt dangerous blockages in blood vessels. Such a blockage or blood clot in vessels carrying blood to the heart can cause a heart attack.

The researchers tested 69 persons, both before and after the persons had taken part in a ten- week physical exercise program. The program involved a great deal of physical efforts tretching, walking and running. The scientists found that there was a large increase in each person’s production of clotdissolving (血塊溶解) substances after the ten-week exercise program. This was true even in those persons who did not change other habits that increased the dangers of heart attack, such as cigarette smoking.

So we said the study is more evident than physical exercise that can help protect the person’s health. Good physical condition can reduce the chances that a person will die from heart or blood vessel diseases.

1.Which of the following is NOT true?

[ ]

A.Heavy drinkers can have liver or nerve disease.

B.Persons with bad habit need more costly hospital care than normal people.

C.The blockage can cause diabetes.

D.Smokers usually have lung diseases.

[ ]

A.We should eat less in order not to be fat.

B.We should not drink.

C.We should all take part in a ten- week physical exerciseprogram.

D.We should form good habits in order to be healthy.

3.________ didn’t face high medical costs.

[ ]

A.Persons who practiced a lot

B.Persons who were overweight

C.Persons who smoked heavily

D.Persons who drank too much alcohol

4.What’s the best rifle of the passage?

A.Health Customs.

B.Physical Exercise.

The researchers found that aspirin(阿司匹林)had an even greater effect on women aged 65 and older. Those who took aspirin were 30 percent less likely to have a stroke(中風(fēng))caused by a blood clot. They were also less likely to suffer a heart attack than those given a placebo(安慰劑).

However, the study found that aspirin did not lower the risk(冒險(xiǎn))of heart attack in younger women. And there were more cases of stomach bleeding in the women who took aspirin than in those who did not.Experts say this shows that, in general, the risks from aspirin use in younger women could be greater than the good it might do.

Aspirin can cause bleeding. It can also cause a bad reaction with other medicines.People who want to begin aspirin treatment are advised to talk to their doctors first.

Experts are not sure why men and women react differently to aspirin treatment. But Doctor Buring notes at least one similarity. She says aspirin has been clearly shown to improve the survival chances for anyone who has already had a heart attackor a stroke.

(1)

According to the passage, aspirin can be effective in curing old women's ________.

[ ]

A.

stroke and cancer

B.

heart disease and high blood pressure

C.

stroke and heart trouble

D.

stomachache and headache

(2)

People who plan to begin aspirin treatment should talk to their doctors first, for it can cause ________.

That “Monday morning feeling” could be a crushing pain in the chest which leaves you sweating and gasping for breath.Recent research from Germany and Italy shows that heart attacks are more common on Monday mornings and doctors blame the stress of returning to work after the weekend break.

The risk of having a heart attack on any given day should be one in seven, but a six year study helped by researchers at the Free University of Berlin of more than 2600 Germans showed that the average person had a 20 percent higher chance of having a heart attack on a Monday than on any other day.

Working Germans are particularly not protected against attack, with a 33 percent higher risk at the beginning of the working week.Non-workers, by comparison, appear to be no more at risk on a Monday than any other day.

A study of 11 000 Italians proved 8 a. m. on a Monday morning as the most stressful time for the heart, and both studies showed that Sunday is the least stressful day, with fewest heart attacks in both countries.

The finding could lead to a better understanding of what is the immediate cause of heart attacks, according to Dr.Stefan Willich of the Free University.“We know a lot about long term risk factors such as smoking and cholesterol(膽固醇)but we don’t know what actually causes heart attacks, so we can’t give clear advice on how to prevent them.” he said.

Monday mornings have a double helping of stress for the working body as it makes a rapid change from sleep to activity and from the relaxing weekend to the pressures of work.

“When people get up, their blood pressure and heart rate go up and there are hormonal(荷爾蒙)changes in their bodies,” Willich explained.“All these things can have an unfavorable effect in the blood system and increase the risk of a clot(血凝塊)which will cause a heart attack.”

“When people return to work after a weekend off, the pace of their life changes. They have a higher workload, more stress, more anger and more physical activities,” said Willich.

people’s living place
