Bored? Don't know what to do with your time? Get your friends or family together, go to the park or go hiking, do something fun —just don't turn on your TV.

The 10th annual TV-Turnoff Week starts on Monday. The TV-Turnoff Network, a nonprofit organization, began the program in 1994 to get children and adults to watch less television so that their time is spent doing more productive things. This year, millions of people will participate and find much more interesting things to do besides sitting in front of the television.

Experts are convinced(確信)that watching too much TV keeps kids from participating in healthy physical activities. The average household has a television on for 7 hours and 40 minutes a day! Kids spend more time watching TV than they spend in school. Turning off the TV gives you a chance to be with your family and friends. Going without it frees up valuable time that could be spent reading a good book, writing, drawing, or discovering something else that may interest you.

There are many organizations that support TV-Turnoff Week, including The Boys and Girls Clubs of America, YMCA, Girl Scouts USA, and Big Brothers/Big Sisters of America.Even First Lady Laura Bush is a supporter. "Television is no substitute for a parent. It doesn't help develop language skills; it's simply background noise," says Mrs. Bush.

Even kids who may not have liked going without TV have discovered the benefits. "I really didn't like TV-Turnoff Week except I did notice that my grades went up and I was in a good mood all week," said Drew Henderson, a student in Donora, Pennsylvania.

The TV-Turnoff Network started TV Turnoff Week to _____.

A.to get people to spend more time doing more productive things

B.to keep kids from participating in healthy physical activities

C.to advise people not to buy television sets

D.to persuade more people to join the organization

Which is not the advantage of turning off the TV?

A.Giving you a chance to be with your family and friends.

       B.Sparing more time reading books.

       C.Developing language skills.

       D.Participating in healthy physical activities.

A.the first woman to support TV-Turnoff Week

       B.the wife of American President

C.the first woman to organize TV-Turnoff Week

The winter holidays are a special time at the White House. Each year, about 44,000 people come to see the holiday decorations or to attend holiday parties at the President’s home in Washington, D.C.

I was able to attend a press preview of the holiday decorations recently, which was hosted by First Lady Laura Bush. This year’s theme for the decorations is “All Things Bright and Beautiful.” The decorations are all made of fresh flowers, garlands(花環(huán)), and fruits. The flowers will have to be changed every few days to keep the look fresh.

The main Christmas tree is in the Blue Room. It’s an 18-foot fir tree—tall enough that the chan-delier(吊燈) had to be removed to make room for it. Fresh white lilies(百合), crystal garlands, and white lights decorate the White House Christmas tree. The room smells of pine and lilies.

Mrs. Bush was asked whether she called the tree a holiday tree or a Christmas tree. “We know that Americans celebrate the season in a lot of different ways,” she said. “We’ll have a party and a reception here at the White House later during the month. But I think we’ve always called this the White House Christmas tree.”

Another centerpiece of the decorations each year is the gingerbread house(姜餅屋), made by chief Thaddeus Dubois.“This is his second gingerbread house,” Mrs. Bush said. “And this year Dubois painstakingly(辛苦地,辛勤地) made it special.” The gingerbread house was made with 100 pounds of gingerbread, 150 pounds of white and dark chocolate, and clear, poured sugar windows. A strand of white lights inside the Gingerbread White House made it glow.

40. Mrs. Bush chose “All Things Bright and Beautiful”as the theme for the decorations to ______.              .

A. highlight nature’s beauty           B. show the great wealth of the family

C. express her love of the country     D. differ from other people’s ideas

41. Which of the following can probably be used to describe the White House after the decorations?

 A. New and clean.                B. Elegant(高貴的) and beautiful.

C. Smelly and shaky.               D. Luxurious(豪華的) and serious.

42. The passage is mainly about ______.             .

 A. how Americans observe Christmas

B. decorating the White House for holidays

C. the differences between a holiday tree and a Christmas tree

D. how to select a present for the White House

First lady Laura Bush announced that she plans to focus America’s attention on making sure that all young children are ready to read and learn when they start school and on recruiting the best and brightest to the detaching profession. She will also highlight the need for more Americans to become teachers. And she will encourage everyone, from young adults to retirees, to bring their talents, energy and enthusiasm to classrooms throughout the nation. Learning to read starts long before a child starts school, and reading skills help make children good students. Reading skills make all other skills possible, she noted.

In 1989, doctors at Boston City Hospital created a programme known as Reach Out and Read(ROR). In ROR clinics, doctors actually ‘prescribe” that parents read to their children. Volunteers in waiting rooms show parents creative ways to read to their children, and every child leaves with a new book. In 1997, Mrs. Bush helped start a ROR programme in her home state of Texas. With her support, more than 60 ROR l=clinic sites have opened in Texas. As the nation’s First Lady, she is committed to supporting ROR in communities across the country.

Finally ,Mrs Bush will encourage others to pursue teaching as a career. “As a former public school teacher and librarian, I have tremendous respect for people who teach,” she said. “Teaching is challenging, sometimes thankless, but incredibly rewarding. We need many more dedicated Americans to teach our children how to learn so that they may ultimately lead successful lives.” She will encourage America’s best and brightest college students, professionals, and military retirees to bring their talents and experiences to classrooms across the nation, especially in inner-city schools where the need is greatest.
