It doesn't matter to fail as long as you don't give up. To my opinion, it is hard to be successful. Challenges were a necessary part of your life as you grow up. And you won't necessary succeed in everything for the first time you try. That's okay. Some of the most successful people in the world are the one who've had the most failure. J.K. Rowling, who wrote HarryPotter, had her first Harry Potter book was rejected 12 times before it was finally published. Michael Jordan was removed his high school basketball team. He lost hundreds of games and miss thousands of shots during his career. But he once said, “I have failed over and over and over again in my life. And that's because I succeed.”

Dear Sam,

I hear that you’ll travel to China next month. Now I’ll tell you anything about it. Beijing is capital city of China. There are so many amazed places we cannot miss. For example, the Great Wall — one of the seven wonder in the world, the Palace Museum and Yuan Ming Yuan. And you may also go to Hua Shan — a dangerously steep mountain. At last I advise you to visit Hu Nan, that is famous for Zhang Jia Jie. In the way, have you ever heard of Mao Zedong, one of the greatest leaders in Chinese history? If you go to Shao Shan, you’ll know many about him. Oh, I must be stop now, but I will get ready for my final exams.

Yours,

Did you know that women’s brains are smaller than men’s? The average women’s brain weighs 10% less than men’s. Since research has shown that the bigger the brain, the cleverer the animal, men must be more intelligent than women. Right? Wrong. Men and women always score similarly on intelligence tests, despite the difference in brain size. Why? After years of study, researchers have concluded that it’s what’s inside that matters, not just the size of the brain. The brain consists of “grey matter” .

It has been suggested that smaller brain appears to work faster, perhaps because the two sides of the brain are better connected in women. This means that little girls tend to learn to speak earlier, and that women can understand sorts of information from different sources at the same time. When it comes to talking to the boss on the phone, cooking dinner and keeping an eye on the baby all at the same time, it’s women who come out on top every time.

There are other important differences between two sexes. As white matter is the key to spatial(空間的) tasks, men know better where things are in relation to other things. “A great footballer always knows where he is in relation to the other players, and he knows where to go,” says one researcher. That may explain one of life’s great mysteries: why men refuse to ask for directions … and women often need to!

The differences begin when fetuses(胎兒) are about nine weeks old, which can be seen in the action of children and young as one. A boy would try to climb a barrier (障礙物) before him or push it down while a girl would attract help from others. These brain differences also explain the fact that more men take up jobs that require good spatial skills, while more women speech skills. It may all go back to our ancestors(祖先) ,among whom women needed speech skills to take care of their babies and men needed spatial skills to hunt, according to one research.

If all this disappoints you, it shouldn’t. “The brain changes throughout our lives according to what we do with it.” says a biologist.

1.Which of the following is true according to the first paragraph?

A. Women’s brain is 10% less than men’s.

B. Grey matter plays the same role as white matter.

C. Grey matter controls thinking in the brain.

D. Both sexes have the same amount of white matter.

2.What can we infer from the second and third paragraphs?

A. Women prefer doing many things at a time.

B. Men do better dealing with one job at a time.

C. Women do not need to tell directions.

D. Men have weaker spatial abilities.

3.Which of the following do you agree with according to the fourth paragraph?

A. Young boys may be stronger than young girls.

B. More women take up jobs requiring speech skills

C. Women may have stronger feelings than men.

D. Our ancestors needed more spatial skills.

4.What is the writer’s attitude in writing this passage?

A. Defensive. B. Persuasive.

C. Supportive. D. Objective.

Maybe you don’t think animals have certain mental powers which human beings do not have. But the truth is that some of them have instincts, and besides this, I am sure they can feel certain things we humans cannot. A personal experience showed me this.

Some years ago, I had a dog named Howard. From the time when he was a puppy, he was timid, so we named him Howard, sounding like “coward”! He was especially afraid of thunderstorms. At the first flash of lightning or crash of thunder, he would run into his house and hide under a table.

I often went for a walk with Howard. Once, as we were walking along a road, it began to rain. I quickly ran to a bus stop for shelter. The bus stop had a roof supported by metal poles. Soon after I had got there, Howard caught my trousers in his teeth and tried to pull me away. At first I was puzzled and a little angry at his behavior. But I decided to humor him and walked away from the shelter into the rain and started to go home.

When I was about two hundred meters from the shelter, there came a flash of lightning and soon after, there was thunder which nearly deafened(震聾) me. Howard stopped walking and began whining(哀鳴). Thinking he was afraid, I bent to pick him up. As I straightened up, I glanced at the bus shelter we had just left. I was shocked to see that two of the poles were bent and the roof was lying on the ground, broken. The shelter had been struck by the bolt of lightning!

1.The reason why the author was puzzled and angry with the dog was that.

A. Howard had a strange behavior

B. Howard should be afraid of the metal poles

C. Howard should know the approaching of the terrible lightning

D. Howard bit his trousers in his teeth

2.Which of the following is true according to the passage?

A. Dogs are cleverer and better than men.

B. Dogs are usually afraid of thunderstorms.

C. Some animals can feel certain things humans cannot.

D. Dogs are naturally born heroes.

3. What can be inferred about the bus shelter from the passage?

A. It was about 200 meters from the author’s home.

B. It was destroyed in a rainy day.

C. Its roof was supported by wood poles.

D. It could produce blinding flash of lightning.

Job Interviews

You have the education and the work experience; now all you need is the job. Most people spend more time getting ready for an evening out than they do preparing for a job interview. There are several things you can do to have a successful job interview. Here are some of them:

1. Know about the company where you are trying to get a job. Find out what the company does and who their competitors(競爭者) are.

2. Know yourself. Most interviewers will ask a question related to your strengths and weaknesses. Before the interview, examine the job you are applying for and determine the top skills needed for that position. For instance, if you are applying for a job as a telephone operator, it’s more important that you have strong communication skills than that you are tidy.

3. Have proof. It’s easy to say you have good organization skills. But if you can tell the interviewer about a time you organized an event, it makes the claim much more solid.

4. Prepare questions to ask about the company and the job.

An interview is a stressful event. When you are under pressure, it can be difficult to think straight. Preparing before the interview will make it easier to give answers to those tough questions. But you can’t think of every question they might ask. So relax and be confident. Remember, first impressions are lasting.

1.A good skill for a telephone operator to have is ________.

A. the ability to smile

B. tidiness

C. good communication skills

D. proof of past experience

2.Which of the following is TRUE?

A. The job interview should be conducted over the telephone.

B. The first time the interviewer sees you is important.

C. You shouldn’t ask questions about the company.

D. You shouldn’t give examples of things you have done in the past.

3.This article is about ________.

A. how to get a job interview

B. how to communicate at work

C. how to prepare for a job interview.

D. how to interview people
