Lead poisoning (鉛中毒) occurs when lead is present in high levels in the blood of a person. It is one of the most common medical problems found in children. And it’s important to recognize the presence of lead in children’s bodies because lead is very harmful.

Children have the tendency to go around and put things in their mouths like paint peelings (油漆層剝皮). This is one of the main causes of lead poisoning. It has also been found that children born in poor families have higher chances of getting exposed to lead.

Some of the common symptoms of lead poisoning in children are headaches, stomach pains, hair loss, muscle weakness and weight loss, etc.

Lead poisoning can have severe effects and can lead to heart diseases, kidney diseases and neurological (神經(jīng)系統(tǒng)的) problems. It can also cause mental dullness and a low IQ level. There have been cases where lead poisoning proved to be terminal for children.

It’s difficult to easily recognize whether a child is affected by lead poisoning, as the symptoms of this disease can occur due to some other medical problems. Therefore, children under the age of six should regularly be checked to know the level of lead in their blood through blood tests. It’s possible to completely cure a child with lead poisoning through treatment. Usually the oral medicine chelator (螯合劑) is given to the children. Sometimes, children are given an injection (注射) for reducing the lead level. Children who have very high level of lead in their blood would need treatment for a long period of time and would also be put on a special diet.

Parents have to take certain precautions to lower the chance of lead poisoning in children. Cleaning the house regularly and removing shoes at the door after coming in from outside will prevent the lead particles from entering the house. Children should be put on a healthy diet, containing high proportions (比例) of calcium and iron, such as eggs, milk, fruits, potatoes, etc, which helps to keep the lead levels in control in the children’s bodies.

In short, it’s a must to be cautious and careful and protect your children from the horrible consequences of lead poisoning.

After years of study,I have known there are only two types of people in this world:those who get to the airport early and those who arrive as the plane is about to take off.

If there were any justice in this world, the early?airport people would be rewarded for doing the right thing and the late?airport people would be punished. But the early?airport people get ulcers(潰瘍),heart attacks and bite their finger?nails to the bone (急得團(tuán)團(tuán)轉(zhuǎn)).The late?airport people are hardly aware that they are flying.

A guy of that kind once said,“Don’t hurry. If you miss your flight,it’s because God didn’t want you to go.”This is clearly a guy who is never going to get an ulcer.

Early?airport people suffer another“name”.They are called exactly what they are—wimps(懦夫).I know I am an early?airport person for years. My luggage will get on the plane first, which makes it the last luggage they take off the plane after landing.

Another strange thing:No matter how early I showed up,I was always told that someone had called two or three years ahead of me and asked for the best seat.I figured it was a trick.I figured there was someone in America who called every airline every day and said,“Is that wimp Simon flying somewhere today? If he is,give me his seat.”

After a lifetime arguing with my wife over whether I really have to pack 24 hours in advance and set the alarm clock four hours ahead,I have learned another fact about early?airport people and late?airport people:

They always marry each other.

Over the last 25 years, British society has changed a great deal – or at least many parts of it have. 1. . Ideas about social class – whether a person is “working - class” or “middle - class” – are one area in which changes have been extremely slow.

In the past, the working-class tended to be paid less than middle-class people. The typical working man would collect his wages on Friday evening and then, it was widely believed, having given his wife her "housekeeping", would go out and squander the rest on beer and betting.

The old style of what a middle-class man did with his money was perhaps nearer the truth. He was-and still is - inclined to take a longer-term view. Not only did he regard buying a house as a most important thing, but he also considered the education of his children as extremely important. 2. . Only in very few cases did workers have the opportunity (or the education and training) to make such long-term plans.

3. . In a large number of cases factory workers earn as much as their middle – class supervisors (管理者). Social security and laws to improve century, have made it less necessary than before to worry about "tomorrow". Working-class people seem slowly to be losing the feeling of inferiority(自卑感). In fact there has been a growing tendency in the past few years for the middle-classes to feel slightly ashamed of their position.

4. .They generally tend to share very similar tastes in music and clothes, they spend their money in having a good time, and save for holidays or longer-term plans when necessary. There seems to be much less difference than in precious generations. 5. . As long as this gap exists, there will always be a possibility that new conflicts and jealousies will emerge, or rather that the old conflicts will re-appear, but between different groups.

A.Nowadays, a great deal has changed

B.Both of these provided him and his family with security

C.As a result, differences in life – styles and attitudes came into existence

D.However, we still have a wide gap between the well – paid and the low - paid

E.In recent years, the working – class people have begun to design long – term plans

F.In some ways, however, very little has changed, particularly where attitudes are concerned

G.The changes in both life – styles and attitudes are probably most easily seen among younger people

When I was in high school, I didn’t know anything about engineering. At that time, when the car I drove needed repairing, I was afraid to take it to the . Because honestly, the mechanic could have me an electric can opener and said, “This is part of your car and it’s -----pay me to fix it.” Then I wouldn’t have known any better.

At the end of my junior year of high school, I heard about a summer program to interest girls in engineering. The six-week program was free, and students were college credits and a dorm room at the University of Maryland. I applied to the program, not because I wanted to be an engineer, but because I was looking forward to and wanted to stay away from my parents for six weeks.

I was accepted to the program and I earned six engineering credits. The next year I entered the university as an engineering student. Five years later I had a degree and three good job offers.

I can’t help shaking I hear about studies that show women are when it comes to math. They imply that I am a little stupid. I’m not, but I know that if I hadn’t met with that summer program, I wouldn’t be an engineer.

When I was growing up, I was told, as many students were, to do what I was best at. But I didn’t know what that was. Most people think that when you are something, it comes easily to you. But this is what I discovered: just because a subject is to learn, it does not mean you are not good at it. You just have to grit your teeth and work hard to get good at it. Once you do, there’s good that you will enjoy it more than anything else.

Last summer I was lucky enough to participate in a volunteer adventure to Kenya, in association with Virgin Atlantic’s Be the Change programme and children’s charity, Free the Children. The moment I read the e-mail saying that I had been accepted into Free the Children’s Virgin Atlantic scholarship trip to Kenya, I had no idea how much it was going to change my life. I thought the trip would be a great way to learn about life in one of the most rural areas of Kenya, but I never thought about how deeply I might be affected by this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.

When we entered the Masai Mara, the first thing that struck me was how unbelievably beautiful it was. As I looked closer to it, I realized there was something even more beautiful: the people. I have never been to a place where the saying “the people are what make the place” was more true.

The way they wave at you excitedly as you drive past, shouting “Jambo, Jambo!” is something that I have never experienced. They are always smiling and welcoming and it made me realize that, if everyone were to act like this, the world would be a much happier place.

The most amazing thing about the trip was that we weren’t treated like tourists for one second. We were able to experience every little detail. We built foundations, carried ten litres of water…

The one thing I will never forget is visiting Emorijoi Primary School. Let me describe it like this: As soon as you entered into the gate, you would hear someone shouting your name. Then you looked around and realized that it was the same little girl that you were playing football with the last time you visited.

There are literally no words to explain how much I miss Kenya. It feels like there is a piece of string attaching me to everyone that I met there. They will stay with me forever and always be in my heart.

1.When the author was informed she was in the volunteer adventure, .

A. she didn’t think much of it

B. she pretended to be excited

C. she became proud of herself

D. she hoped to learn more about Kenya

2.What made the Masai Mara much more beautiful? _____.

A. The local people B. The scenery

C. The lovely children D. The primary school

3.According to the passage, “Jambo” is actually a way for the local people to_____.

A. say thanks to the visitors

B. praise the beautiful visitors

C. greet the visitors

D. express their happiness

4.Which word can best describe the author’s feeling of the adventure?

A. Calm B. Unexpected

C. Upset D. Threatened
