【題目】When early colonial settlers went to America, they took many forms of dance to their new home. Square dancing, one of the oldest forms of American folk dancing, developed from several different Old World group dances, mainly English country dances, and the French quadrille(四對方舞).
In the American version of square dancing, four couples form a square and dance to music. An American addition to square dancing is the caller. What do you think a caller does?
The callers---someone who calls out the dance steps in time to the music--- was a completely American invention. At first dancers memorized all the steps for a particular dance, but eventually the dances became so complicated that it was necessary to have someone call out cues (提示) so that dancers didn’t have to remember so many steps. The caller didn’t just call out “do-se-do your partner”; a good caller also came up with colorful sayings or witty lines that he said in between the cues such as “Don’t be shy and don’t be afraid. Swing on the corner in a waltz promenade (步伐).” A caller might also come up with new dance steps and routines.
Although popular for years, square dancing seemed to be going out of style and fading away until the early 1930s, when Henry Ford helped revive(復蘇)interest in it. Ford, the automobile manufacturer, used to vacation at the Wayside Inn in Massachusetts, where he enjoyed the dance programme run by a man named Benjamin Lovett. Ford asked Lovett to come to Detroit and teach dances, but Lovett said he couldn’t because he had a contract with the inn. Ford solved that problem by buying the inn and Lovett’s contract. He took Lovett back to Detroit, where together they established a programme for teaching squares and rounds. Square dancing was updated and groups began forming all over the country.

【題目】In 1978, I was 18 and was working as a nurse in a small town about 270 km away from Sydney, Australia. I was looking forward to having five fays off from duty. Unfortunately, the only one train a day back to my home in Sydney had already left. So I thought I’d hitch a ride (搭便車).
I waited by the side of the highway for three hours but no one stopped for me. Finally, a man walked over and introduced himself as Gordon. He said that although he couldn’t give me a lift, I should come back to his house for lunch. He noticed me standing for hours in the November heat and thought I must be hungry. I was doubtful as a young girl but he assured (使…放心)me I was safe, and he also offered to help me find a lift home afterwards. When we arrived at his house, he made us sandwiches. After lunch, he helped me find a lift home.
Twenty-five years later, in 2003, while I was driving to a nearby town one day, I saw an elderly man standing in the glaring heat, trying to hitch a ride. I thought it was another chance to repay someone for the kindness I’d been given decades earlier. I pulled over and picked him up. I made him comfortable on the back seat and offered him some water.
After a few moments of small talk, the man said to me, “You haven’t changed a bit, even your red hair is still the same.” I couldn’t remember where I’d met him. He then told me he was the man who had given me lunch and helped me find a lift all those years ago. It was Gordon.

【題目】All hotels redecorate regularly. However, very few do it as frequently as Sweden’s Icehotel. As the name indicates, the hotel that is located in the remote village of Jukkasjarvi, is built entirely from ice and, therefore, has to be rebuilt annually! The 26th version of Icehotel, which welcomed its first visitors on December 11th,features 69 rooms. To make them affordable for everyone, they range from expensive luxury suites to basic accommodations.
Among this year’s unique suite offerings is the“Elephant in the Room”,which features a massive 3-m tall sculpted African elephant overlooking an ice—framed bed. The“Counting Sheep”suite features frozen sheep that may help those who don’t sleep well get a good night’s rest. Though the atmosphere between the luxury suites and the budget rooms may differ, they are all subject to the bone-chilling-5℃ temperatures. To get a good night’s rest guests have to lie inside sleeping bags and keep their gloves and hats on. Though that seems a little uncomfortable, visitors say it is an experience like none other.
The hotel also features a beautifully crafted ice church where over 100 couples will get married this year and an Ice Bar that will serve drinks in ice glasses. Though dining options are limited to the hotel’s only restaurant, guests will have little to complain about with Michelin—trained chef Alexander Meier. To keep customers entertained, the hotel offers a variety of fun activities like snowshoeing, moose or snowmobile safaris, dog sledding, and even overnight wilderness camping.
The 26-year-·old tradition began accidentally in 1989 when locals organized an art exhibition to draw winter visitors to the remote village that lies 200 km north of the Arctic Circle. Making Peace with Your Parents
As a teen, you’re going through big changes physically and mentally. Your interests are increasing. 【1】 . Here is the challenge: Kids need to explore the world in new ways, and parents need to protect them from the dangers that are all out in that world. These conflicts can easily set off fireworks in otherwise calm houses. Sometimes conflicts can’t be avoided. But by paying attention to the building blocks of successful relationships, you can work towards making home a happy and healthy place for you and your parents.
For instance, try to find a time to talk when your parents are not angry, tired, distracted or hungry. A good time to talk is when you’re all relaxed. Timing is everything. If the conversation begins to turn into an argument, you’d better calmly and coolly ask to stop the conversation for now. 【2】 . Listen to what your parents are saying, and repeat it back to them. 【題目】Satellites play big roles in modern life. Some look downward to monitor environmental conditions on Earth.Others look outward in search of major solar flares(耀斑) that can trouble the transmission(傳送) of electrical power to homes and businesses. Some spy on our enemies. Others relay communications around the globe. But all of these million-dollar wonders of technology can be knocked out by a collision with space junk ---debris (碎片 )from satellites and other earthly technology orbiting high above the planet. Now,a teen from Jordan has designed a satellite to chase down space junk , collect it and then deal with it.
Even bits of space junk as small as dots of paint pose a threat , says Dana. That's because this debris orbits our planet at speeds up to some 28,200 kilometers per hour. Such high speed explains why tiny paint dots have damaged the windshields of space shuttles so badly that they needed to be replaced.
Researchers have come up with many ideas for getting rid of space junk. Some have suggested vaporizing(蒸發(fā)) small bits with lasers. Others have proposed launching satellites to collect the debris. Dana's design falls into this category.
Here's how hers would work : A radar system aboard the satellite would scan and find a piece of space junk. Then, thrusters(推進器)would change the satellite's orbit so that it could chase down the errant object. As the satellite closed in on its prey, cameras would keep it on target.
At the last minute,a door that leads to a container would open. This container needs to be strong so that it doesn't break apart when the satellite swallows the space junk,Dana explains. Finally, when the trash container was full,it would be lowered toward the earth on a kilometer-long cable and its contents released into the upper atmosphere. There, the space junk would harmlessly burn up just like a meteor (流星) does. Meanwhile, her satellite would roll the container back up so that it could collect more trash.
【1】What is focused on in the first paragraph?
A. The types of satellites being categorized into.
B. The tracks of satellites orbiting above the planet.
C. The sources of space junk coming from.
D. The danger that satellites face in space.
【2】Why can small pieces of space junk threaten satellites?
A. They travel at a very high speed.
B. They are difficult to track by satellites.
C. They can blow up into millions of pieces.
D. They are as soft as a ball in the air.
【3】The underlined words "the errant object" refer to_____.
A. the radar system that scans space junk
B. the space junk that travels in disorder
C. the satellite that doesn't keep its track
D. the camera that can't keep space junk on target
【4】According to the Dana's design, space junk in her satellite___________.
A. will be swallowed and stored in its trash bin
B. will be broken apart in the trash container
C. will be destroyed by heat in the upper atmosphere
D. will be transported to the earth through a cable
