【題目】 Small talk is stressful for even the most easy-going people. 1 Below, small-talk experts share their best advice on developing good chatting skills.

Ask questions.

The key to good small talk is asking the other person a lot of questions. But avoid rapid-fire questions. 2 Be sure to express your own feelings in response to what they share.

Avoid conversation starters like “How have you been?”

You could not ask a more awkward question. A better way to produce meaningful conversation is to add “What is new in your life since the last time I saw you?

Avoid one-word answers.

3 When someone asks you a question, give them something to talk about with you, not a word or two. Fine said, if someone asks you, “How was your summer?”, you can answer, for instance. My summer was great. I’m excited about my vegetable garden. That will give the person something else to ask you about.

4

Your facial expression and body language should let the other person know you’re truly listening to them. A recent study showed that people who used hand or head gestures received responses to their questions faster than those who didn’t.

Small talk may help you connect with someone new with whom you want to have a more serious talk. 5

A.You don’t have to be a reporter.

B.Don’t worry about it too much, though.

C.You could not ask a more inconvenient question.

D.It’s the first step to any meaningful relationship.

E.Use your hands to keep the conversation flowing.

F.Don’t be a disappointing person in a conversation.

G.You should make a conversation with people you like.

【題目】 Have you ever wondered why some days all you want to do is snack?

Under normal circumstances, we feel hungry when we have burnt up the food we have eaten as energy and our blood sugar and insulin (胰島素)levels begin to drop. Ghrelin, a hormone connected to appetite, then communicates this to the brain, which is how we feel the need to eat. But some sorts of things can influence this process.

According to a 2011 study by researchers at Columbia University in the US, those who are lack of sleep eat almost 300 calories a day more than those who get enough sleep. This is because levels of the hormone ghrelin, which tells the brain we need to eat, increase when we don’t get enough sleep. The Columbia researchers noted that the women who didn’t get enough sleep took in more fat rising by around 30g on sleep-lack daysfour times as much as the average increase for men.

The bright blue light emitted by devices such as smartphones and tablets may give an unwelcome encouragement to your appetite.Research this year found that your appetite continued to increase when you are exposed to the light. It also changed people’s metabolism(新陳代謝), as blood tests showed that the blue-light subjects had higher insulin and glucose levels. One possible explanation is that bright blue light at night confuses our body clock, which has a role in controlling when we feel the need to eat.

【題目】 My mother was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s (老年癡呆癥) last summer. Suddenly, it was difficult for me to accept that the roles were now changed — my mother became my child, and I became her mother. I became impatient, argued with her, once I even yelled at her. Gradually, I was used to this kind of life. Now I am able to deal with her and the situation better. I have learned a lot of life lessons from the experience.

My mother reacts very sensitively to my feelings. That is typical of Alzheimer’s patients. When I visit her, feeling hectic and tense, she reacts immediately, takes on my mood, and becomes nervous and negative. But when I appear cheerful and attentive, she is happy. This has taught me to pay more attention to my own feelings when I am with other people.

Through the illness my mother has developed a childlike tactlessness (不得體). Eating out in restaurants, for example, is a bit embarrassing when she shouts at the waiter that the food is so bad or talks about people at the next table in a loud voice. Of course I make sure that my mother doesn’t hurt anyone, but I’ve stopped complaining about others and have become more tolerant.

I have also learned that everything has special value. When my mother got sick I didn’t want to burden my two daughters with it. They are young and have enough going on with their education, and starting their careers. I felt that it was simply my job as my mother’s daughter. The most wonderful discovery I’ve made through my mother’s disease may be that my children not only offer to help me, but that they take care of my mother on their own actively. They visit her often, play cards with her, and look at photo albums together with her. It shows me that it’s all worth it.

1What does the underlined “hectic” in the Paragraph 2 mean?

A.delighted.B.touched.

C.surprised.D.stressed.

2Which of the following is the common behavior of Alzheimer’s patients?

A.Being particular about clothes.B.Being curious about feelings.

C.Being afraid of strange people.D.Being sensitive to others’moods.

3What can we know about the writer’s daughters according to the passage?

A.They are naughty.B.They are considerate.

C.They are traditional.D.They are selfish.

4What is the passage mainly about?

A.How I Cared for My Sick Mother.B.How I Became More Tolerant.

C.What I Have Learned from Alzheimer’s.D.Why I Am Feeling stressed.
