I am a member of our school’s volunteer association. During my freshman(大學(xué)一年級新生) year, I was asked to write up a plan for volunteers who assisted patients there. So I visited the hospice (末期病人療養(yǎng)所) several times. Later, I realized I could do more for the patients and so began volunteering.

When I was a freshman, I was not used to college life. I sometimes felt the hospice was like home. Here, many grannies treated me like their own relative, and I could feel strongly that I was needed. Just shaking hands made them come to life. I not only get great comfort from helping many patients get through the last period of their lives. I also learn a lot from their experiences.

You have to be prepared both mentally and physically. Most people at this hospice are facing death. So you have prepared to be patient and make them happy and relaxed. Also, persistence is needed. After seeing so many people here die, I know that persistence is hard. But you have to remember that you job is to help them feel less pain before death.

Good volunteers have something in common: They regard their job as a career, rather than some task that’s been assigned. They learn to enjoy what they are doing, no matter how boring it is. We have a volunteer who has been with us for more than a year. His job is translating letters from kids we helped. Even when he was busy with his classes, he would take a taxi to our office to pick up the letters. When we asked him why, he told us he enjoyed the kids’ stories and learned a lot from them.
___________________
Students are often very enthusiastic and direct. They give us feedback that helps us improve our work. And they value the opportunity we give them to broaden their horizons. However, they are still young and some are not responsible enough. And sometimes, they are lazy and careless.

Loma just had to get in touch with someone: “I had to tell my best
friend something important. I tried calling her but I couldn’t get through. So I sent her an e-mail and then I spoke to her on MSN. Without technology I would not have been able to tell her. ”
Staying connected with friends and family is important for us. That’s
why we asked our readers to tell us how cell-phones, e-mail, blogs, text messaging, and personal pages help them keep in touch. More than 1,500 responded.
Most of them told us they couldn’t live without technology: 80%of
teens said they need technology to stay in touch. Almost 30%said they’d be completely out of their friends without their cell-phones and other methods of communication.
What do they do when they’ve got news they need to share now? Most
teens say they try to reach their friends by phone. But if they don’t reach them, they use QQ, e-mails, and text messaging to get the words out.
Lots of people use one way of communication—like text messaging—to
get a friend’s attention and then use another where they can talk more. “My friends and I always tell each other everything that happens. So I send them text messages to tell them to come online so we can talk about it,” said Sabeiha.
“When planning to get together with friends”, Julian said, “the easiest
and fastest way I know is to send a text message to my contact group.”
Jocelyn said. “If I want to go to see a movie with a few friends, I usually
send text message to them. By telephone, you have to call every single friend
one by one. But text messaging allows you to send the same message to as
many as you’d like, which saves a lot of time. ”

This report presents details of home computers used by a random sample (隨機抽樣) of young people. It is a common idea that teenagers today know about computers and know how to use them in all aspects of their lives. We decided to try to find out whether that was true.
【小題1】 All the teenagers we chose said they had computers at home. We asked them how much time they spent on their computers in an average week, but we were most interested in what they used their computers for. The average time spent on a computer in a week was about 12 hours, with the highest user averaging 32 hours and the lowest user only 5 hours. 【小題2】 【小題3】 Fourteen teenagers told us they did some word processing at home, but not very much. Only 2 of them said that computers helped them with their studies, while 8 of them told us they kept addresses and telephone numbers on their computers or used them as diaries. Only 3 of them said they were learning to program computers, and nobody looked up information (other than their address lists). 【小題4】
The results indicate quite clearly that computers are seen by most young people as little more than game machines. 【小題5】 It seems to us that, although computers are common in the homes of teenagers, they have not yet become useful tools in everyday life.
A.There no big difference between boys and girls. |
B.All of the teenagers questioned said they regularly used to play games. |
C.We questioned thirty young people between 14 and 18. |
D.But some adults admitted that they had no computers at home. |

To: manager@ tastytreat.com.ca
Date: Monday, 7 October, 3:34p.m.
From: raymondyuen@ canada.net
Subject: Complaint
Dear Mr. Price,
I have eaten in your restaurant many times and have always been happy with the food and service. This makes what happened last Saturday even more disappointing.
It was my son’s birthday so we booked a no-smoking table at your restaurant for 7:30 p.m. We arrived on time but were told that our table was not yet ready. At 8:00 p.m., we were given a table in the smoking section. I asked to move but I was told that there were no other tables. A lot of people were smoking so it was uncomfortable and unhealthy.
Our first waitress, Janet, was very polite and helpful. She gave us free drinks for waiting so long. Our food also came quickly and looked fresh and tasty. When my wife had eaten most of her meal, she found a dead cockroach (蟑螂) in her vegetables. She was shocked and wanted to leave. At first, the waitress told us it was a piece of garlic(蒜). When we told her that garlic does not have legs, she apologized and took the food away.
We asked for the bill, expecting not to pay for my wife’s meal. Nobody came. After 15 minutes, I asked to see the manager. The head waiter told us that you were on holiday. I complained again about the horrible cockroach. He told me Janet had finished work. He didn’t believe my story and gave me a bill for three meals. I argued with him but was forced to pay.
The waitress, Janet, was always friendly, but I would like an apology from your impolite head waiter and a full refund (退款) for our meal. It cost $68. Until then, I will not be eating at your restaurant or recommending it to anyone.
You can contact me at 742-3254 or through e-mail if you want more information.
Thank you for your attention.
Yours sincerely,
Raymond Yuen
