Today, Mandatory(強(qiáng)制的) recycling is a hard sell in the United States, where the economy runs largely along free market lines and the current landfilling waste remains inexpensive and efficient.
Plain and simple, recycling still costs more than landfilling in most places. This fact, 【1】(couple) with the disappearance of the so-called “l(fā)andfill crisis” of the mid-1990s, means that recycling has not caught on, which runs 【2】 some environmentalists’ wishes.
However, many cities have found ways to recycle economically. They have cut costs by automating sorting and processing. They’ve also found profitable markets for the recyclables(可回收物) 【3】 cast-off items are acceptable or even welcome. Increased efforts by green groups 【4】(educate) the public about the benefits of recycling have also helped.

To businesses with garbage containers “polluted” with more than 10 recyclables, warnings 【7】(issue). If they fail to take action, fines are expected.
New York, a national leader on recycling, decided to stop its least cost-effective recycling programs (plastic and glass) in 2002. But rising landfill costs ate up the $39 million savings expected.
As a result, the city brought back plastic and glass recycling and committed to a 20-year contract with a recycling firm, Hugo Neu Corporation, which built the 【8】(advanced) recycling facility in the country.
The company focuses on 【9】could cut costs. Automation has streamlined the sorting process, and easy access to rail has cut both the environmental and transportation costs. The new deal and new facility have made recycling efficient for the city and its residents, 【10】(show) once and for all that responsibly-run recycling programs can actually save money, landfill space and the environment.

be coupled with表示“與……
句意同上,由“ recycling has not caught on”可知,run against表示“違反、違背”符合句意,故填against。
efforts后接不定式作后置定語(yǔ), “efforts to do”表示“做……
The new deal and new facility與show之間是邏輯上的主謂關(guān)系,表示主動(dòng),用現(xiàn)在分詞作狀語(yǔ),故填showing。

To joke around is to have fun with someone. To fool someone is to try to make them believe something that is not true. 【1】
April 1st is known as the day to fool people with practical jokes, pranks or harmless tricks. 【2】 Some say April Fools' Day began as one big mistake.
Many centuries ago, people in the Western world used the Julian calendar. 【3】 However, when people began using the Gregorian calendar, the New Year was moved to January 1st. Those who forgot the change and tried to celebrate New Year's Day on the wrong date were teased and called 'April fools'. This is just one of the many theories behind the origin of April Fools' Day. 【4】
The fool is a common character in art, music and literature. William Shakespeare is famous for his fools. And fools make for great pop songs. Fools are found in many words, expressions and proverbs. To be foolhardy means to do something that are too dangerous or risky. For example, it is foolhardy to hike up a mountain during a heavy snowstorm. If something is foolproof, it is planned or made so well that nothing could go wrong. 【5】
'Look, I don't want to get into trouble. This plan of yours sounds risky. '
'My plan is foolproof. Nothing will go wrong as long as you do exactly as I say. '
A.Not even a fool could mess it up.
B.And that is the purpose of April Fools' Day.
C.They celebrated the New Year on April 1st.
D.Even a smart person can be a fool at times.
E.But the tradition remains the same—to fool someone.
F.Fools also find themselves in many proverbs.
G.But how did this tradition begin?

Teamwork is all about working together to achieve a common goal or purpose. Is teamwork out of date? Why is it so hard to effectively conduct teamwork in those things?
One way we employ teamwork in everyday lives is by becoming a parent. It is a parent’s job to teach their children the fundamental skills and give them the knowledge they need to be successful in life. So why is teamwork disappearing in this aspect of our lives? Well in today’s society, we find that more and more parents are experiencing that the teamwork is a one-sided thing. According to a 2009 report from the US, there are 13.7 million single parents raising their children in the US and this amount could be due to the fact that parents are not stepping up and taking responsibility for their children or they don’t have the means to, so they leave one parent to do it by themselves. This is a saddening fact, but it reflects that effective teamwork is losing ground in the parenting aspect of our everyday lives.
Another place where teamwork affects us greatly is in our jobs. It doesn’t matter if you are a small or large company; if you have at least one employee and yourself, then teamwork will be present. I have noticed that with the current economic recession(衰退), people are racing to grab jobs but the quality of people’s work has gone down greatly. It just appears to me that people do not take part in their work any more. They want to get to work and work as fast as they can, just to receive the paycheck, but their quality standards fly right out the window. This type of behavior is where I think teamwork is losing its ground in the workforce. There are too many people who want to work independently and forget they are a part of a team.
As you can see, we run into the aspects of teamwork in just about everything we do. Do you believe teamwork is really losing ground in today’s society? I think it is. What’s your opinion?

A. workers don’t like to work together with others
B. workers’ sense is affected by economic recession
C. workers want to prove they are more capable
D. fewer workers are employed to save money
