The TV shows a baby’s pram (嬰兒車) rolling off a train platform as the mother makes a mad rush to save her son, but she is too late and it falls onto the rails in front of an incoming train. This heart-stopping scene happened yesterday at Ashburton station in Melbourne, Australia. But the story has a happy ending: the six-month-old baby survived with just a cut on his forehead, although the pram was dragged about 35 metres by the braking train. The nurse Jon Wright said the boy just “needed a feed and a sleep” and didn’t need to stay in hospital.
“Luckily, he was strapped (綁) into his pram at the time, which probably saved his life. I think the child is extremely lucky, ” Wright told the Herald Sun newspaper after the baby was taken to hospital with minor injuries.
Fortunately the train was already slowing down to stop at the station so it stopped quickly when the driver put on the brakes as soon as he saw the pram fall in front of him. Rail firm Connex is to look into how the pram rolled off the platform. The accident came one day after Connex started a child safety awareness activity warning parents to keep babies strapped into their prams at all times while on platforms.
The accident happened at the same time as the “balloon boy ”story in the US, in which a six-year-old Colorado boy was reported to be trapped in a flyaway balloon. However, he was later found hiding in the family’s garage. Many people believe that it had all been a publicity stunt by the parents. No such doubts surround the baby on the train platform.

Steve Fossett did not really look like an adventurer, but he reached some of the most difficult goals in sailing and flying.
Fossett was most proud of being the first person to fly around the world alone in a hot-air balloon. To make a trip around the world alone, it was necessary to have an improved autopilot (自動(dòng)駕駛儀) device. Fossett had one of his team members develop a more advanced balloon autopilot that would allow him to sleep and do other tasks while flying safely.
Steve Fossett attempted the hot-air balloon trip around the world six times. This was not easy to do. He flew in the balloon’s capsule (密封艙) that was too small to stand upright. During his fourth attempt in 1998, he was almost killed during a storm off the coast of Australia. He fell 9,000 meters into the Coral Sea with his balloon’s capsule on fire. He was later rescued at sea.
Fossett successfully made the trip in 2002. The trip started and ended in Australia. He traveled more than 33,000 kilometers for more than 14 days. On this flight, Fossett set other records including a speed record of 322 kilometers per hour. One main problem with earlier balloon flights was the threat of dangerous storms. A team of weather experts e-mailed and talked to Fossett by a satellite telephone to help him avoid such weather.
Steve Fossett’s hot-air balloon is now at the Smithsonian’s National Air and Space Museum in Washington, D.C. It is there as an example for other people to try and succeed in doing something important to them.

B.He had an autopilot impvoved. |
C.He formed a team to fly with him. |
D.He improved the balloon’s engine. |
A.communicating with experts |
B.using his rich experience |
C.inventing a satellite phone |
D.consulting other adventurers |
A.patient and careful | B.modest and easy-going |
C.brave and determined | D.energetic and kind-hearted |
A.He was rescued during the trip. |
B.He lost his way over the sea. |
C.It lasted over three weeks. |
D.He set a speed record of balloon flight. |

Dr.Ferguson energetically pushed the preparations for his departure, and in person directed the construction of his balloon. For a long time past he had been applying himself to the study of the Arab language and the various Mandingoe idioms, and, thanks to his talents in language,he had made rapid progress.
In the meanwhile, his friend, the sportsman, never let him out of
his sight-afraid,no doubt, that the doctor might take his departure, without saying a word to anybody. On this subject,he tried to discourage him with the most persuasive arguments, which, however, did NOT persuade Samuel Ferguson, and wasted his breath,by which the latter seemed to be but slightly moved. In fine,Dick felt that the doctor was slipping through his fingers.

A group of students in Japan have created a realistic robot baby to motivate young people to start planning a family so as to increase the country’s birth rate. The automated (自動(dòng)化的)doll developed at the University of Tsukuba, called Yotara, laughs and “wakes up” when a rattle is shaken.
He can become angry and sleep like a real baby and he smiles when his stomach is pressed. The robot can also sneeze and have a runny nose, thanks to a heated water pump system. The students of the Graduate school of Comprehensive Human Science at the university created the robot last year with touch sensors. A projector sends the facial features onto a warm silicon balloon which makes up Yotara’s face. The robot’s facial expression and body movements change according to pressure applied to different parts of its body.
The information collected through touch sensors(傳感器)under the silicon skin is processed by a special programme. It then changes the baby’s expression projected onto the balloon-face from behind. There is a hat on the robot’s head and a colorful blanket covering the robot’s limbs which simulate wiggling(擺動(dòng)) with the help of a geared motor. “We wanted to create a new type of robot that is soft, cuddly and cute,” said project leader Hiroki Kunimura.
“We’d like people to experience the innocent, joyful expressions typical of small babies. Through this experience, it would be great if some people started feeling that they wanted to have their own baby, if they started feeling that work is not everything.”
Japan’s birth rate is among the lowest in the developed world at 1.37%, compared to 2.12% in the United States and l.84%in Britain. Japan is facing serious economic consequences with over a quarter of its citizens expected to be aged over 65 by 20l5.The population is expected to reduce by a third within 50 years if the birth rate does not increase.
1.. What is the students’ purpose of creating such a baby?
A. To help old people who live alone. B. To give small children some pleasure
C. To comfort lonely young people. D. To increase the population of Japan.
2. What’s the new type of robot like in Hiroki Kunimura’s mind?
A. It can do everything for humans. B. It is clever, humorous and loyal.
C. It is gentle, lovely and smart. D. It makes humans unhappy.
3.. What can we learn from the passage?
A. Many young people in Japan don’t want to get married.
B. There may be a lack of workers in Japan in the future.
C. The lifespan(壽命)of Japanese people will decrease in the future.
D. The birth rate in Japan will start to increase slowly soon.
