French writer Frantz Fanon once said: “To speak a language is to take on a world, a culture.” Since the world changes every day, so does our language.
More than 300 new words and phrases have recently made it into the online Oxford Dictionary, and in one way or another they are all reflections of today’s changing world.
After a year that was politically unstable, it’s not hard to understand the fact that people’s political views are one of the main drives of our expanding vocabulary. One example is “clicktivism”, a compound of “click” and “activism”. It refers to “armchair activists” — people who support a political or social cause, but only show their support from behind a computer or smartphone. And “otherize” is a verb for “other” that means to alienate (使疏遠(yuǎn)) people who are different from ourselves — whether that be different skin color, religious belief or sexuality.
Lifestyle is also changing our language. For example, “fitspiration” — a compound of fit and inspiration — refers to a person or thing that encourages one to exercise and stay fit and healthy.
The phrase “climate refugee” — someone who is forced to leave their home due to climate change — reflects people’s concern for the environment.
According to Stevenson, social media was the main source for the new expressions. “People feel much freer to coin their own words these days,” he said.
But still, not all newly-invented words get the chance to make their way into a mainstream (主流的) dictionary. If you want to create your own hit words, Angus Stevenson, Oxford Dictionaries head of content development, suggests that you should not only make sure that they are expressive (有表現(xiàn)力的) and meaningful, but also have an attractive sound so that people will enjoy saying them out loud.
1.What is the article mainly about?
A. Some new word that got included into the online Oxford Dictionary.
B. The application of new words and phrases.
C. How a language mirrors the changing world.
D. The impact of social media on our language.
2.The underlined word “coin” in the second-to-last paragraph probably means ________.
A. use B. record
C. change D. create
3.How is the article mainly developed?
A. By giving examples. B. By making comparisons.
C. By following a timeline. D. By presenting research findings.
4.According to Stevenson, to make the words you invent popular, they should ________.
A. be easy to remember B. have unique meanings
C. reflect the changing world D. be meaningful, expressive and catchy

The game of rugby football was played at Rugby School between 1750 and 1859, but players were not allowed to run with it in their hands towards the other side’s goal. With no limit to the number of players per side, hundreds would participate in it, sometimes resulting in major injuries. The innovation(創(chuàng)新) of running with the ball was introduced between 1859 and 1865. The popular myth of the sport’s origin states that Rugby pupil William Webb Ellis broke the local rules by running forward with the ball in his hands in 1823. Rugby School produced the first written rules for their version of the sport in 1845.
In the result that the teams still tied at the end of the match, a drop goal shootout was held. The selected kickers of the two teams would have one shot at the goal each and would take turns shooting at the goal until one of the kickers missed.
In England, rugby union is widely regarded as an “establishment” sport, played mostly by members of the upper and middle classes. For example, many students at private schools and grammar schools play in rugby union. In France, rugby is also widely played and has a strong tradition in the Basque people along the border regions between Spain and France. The game is very popular in South Africa among both blacks and whites, having been introduced by English-speaking settlers in the 19th century. British colonists also brought the game with them to Australia and New Zealand, where the game is widely played. It has spread then to much of Polynesia, having particularly strong followings in Fiji, Samoa, and Tonga.
An official rugby union ball is made of leather or suitable material. Rugby shirts were formerly made of cotton but are now made of a cotton and polyester (滌綸) mix. This material has the advantage of not absorbing as much water or mud as cotton alone.
1.Which of the following statements is WRONG about the ancient rugby?
A. Players often got injured.
B. A great number of people could take part.
C. Players could run forward with the ball in their hands before 1823.
D. Written rules were first made in Rugby School in the 1840s.
2.Why was a drop goal shootout made?
A. To select outstanding players.
B. To encourage the audience’s curiosity.
C. To make the match exciting.
D. To decide the winner of the match.
3.The third paragraph mainly talks about _______.
A. the popularity of rugby sport
B. how rugby union was established in England
C. how British people spread the sport
D. the origin and development of rugby
4.Rugby shirts made of cotton alone ___________.
A. are easy to absorb much water and mud
B. are replaced by polyester shirt finally
C. are much more expensive than polyester
D. are much suitable to the players

One of the many great lines in the movie Apollo 13 came from Ed Harris, who played NASA Director of Operations, Gene Kranz. The famous line was, “Gentleman, failure is not an option.” He said the words because he had a clear purpose that the three astronauts trapped in space must be sent home safely. The driving force behind their seeking of a solution was motivated by a true purpose.
Here is the simple principle. If you have a big enough ‘why’ in life, you will always figure out the ‘how.’ A person without a purpose in life is like a boat without a rudder, floating aimlessly without a direction and going nowhere. In all walks of life, when referring to someone’s success, we often hear the words “focus and determination”. But Merriam Webster defines the word “purpose” as the reason why something is done, a feeling of being determined to achieve an outcome. There are many talented and intelligent people in the world that are unsuccessful because they lack direction. I believe that our life depends on our purpose. Whether you’re single or in a team, having a purpose allows you to start, evaluate, and improve your talents or abilities helps you find your path in life and achieve your success finally.
A friend of mine once told me that the most motivating speech he had ever heard was just three short words. It came from his wife when she said, “Honey I’m pregnant.” He said those few words instantly motivated him because he now had a big “why” in his life, a purpose to work hard to support his family. In fact, when your “why” gets bigger, you get better because you stop holding back and you’ll go all out. It’s why you often hear about some great people perform superhuman actions when failure is not an option!
1.What does the underlined word “rudder” in paragraph 2 refer to?
A. Something that gets the boat started
B. Something that makes the boat float
C. The reason for which the boat is built
D. Something that directs the boat to a certain place.
2.What is the most important thing for success according to Merriam Webster?
A. Talent B. Purpose
C. Determination D. Intelligence
3.The author gives his friend’s example to show________.
A. why words can motivate people easily
B. that family love is very important in our daily life
C. that a purpose can make people try their best
D. how people can get success more easily
4.What does the author mainly tell us in this passage?
A. To be successful person B. To have a big “Why” in life
C. To make a right choice D. To get rid of failure

Most times, what people accept as hope is a feeling or thought that something desired may happen. The word hope is a guarantee(保證)of happiness without a doubt. Hope in ancient Greek is “elpis” meaning “to expect or look forward with pleasure”. Orison Swett Marden says “there is no medicine as great and powerful expectation of something better tomorrow.”
Samuel Esson Jonah is one of the world’s most influential personalities of this century. When he was young, mining for Africans was hell on earth, because they were treated very badly and there were no key positions in the industry for them because it was believed that the black could not manage their affairs successfully. Even in the face of all these challenges and discriminations, Jonah hoped to head the industry someday. When he told his workmates and parents about his hope, he became a laughing stock. Not giving up on his hope, he worked hard toward it and at last he became president of Anglo Gold Ashanti.
Hope without doubt helps you to work hard until you finally achieve your aims or goals. Hope keeps one alive and also helps us persevere (堅持) to succeed. Someone may say “I’ve tried and failed several times”. As a matter of fact, failure is inevitable(無法避免的) sometimes but that doesn’t overrule your ability to succeed. The key is that you can’t give up your hope. Our history has seen many great achievers. Though they hoped they could make it, they also failed; however, they didn’t give up on their hope. They worked even harder and eventually succeeded.
Today when we can celebrate so many of them for their courage, remember “faith without work is dead”, so is your dream or hope. Samuel Similes says “Hope is the companion(伙伴) of power, the mother of success, for who so hopes strongly has within him the gift of miracles (奇跡).” So don’t let your hope down.
1.What is Paragraph 1 mainly about?
A. How to remain hopeful.
B. What hope really means.
C. The importance of having hope.
D. The relationship between hope and pleasure.
2.The author uses the example of Samuel Esson Jonah mainly to _________.
A. prove that hope can lead to success
B. prove a lowly man can also succeed
C. show the times produce their heroes
D. show it’s hard for a black to succeed
3.According to Paragraph 3, to succeed one should _________.
A. acquire great ability
B. avoid quitting easily
C. try to understand history
D. stop being overconfident
4.Which would be the best title for the text?
A. Hope is just a choice
B. Keep your hope alive
C. Failure breeds success
D. How to achieve success
