In order to know a foreign language thoroughly(完全地), four things are necessary. First, we must understand the language when we hear it spoken. Secondly, we must be able to speak it ourselves, correctly with confidence(自信) and without hesitation(猶豫). Thirdly, we must be able to write it. We must be able to make sentences that are correct in grammar.
There is no short way to succeed in language learning. A good memory(記憶) is a great help, but it is not enough only to memorize the rules from a grammar book. It is no much use learning by heart long lists(一覽表) of words and their meanings, studying the dictionary and so on. We must learn by using the language. If we are pleased with a few rules we have memorized, we are not really learning the language. We must “Learn through use”. Practice is important. We must practise speaking and writing the language whenever(無論何時(shí)) we can.

Free energy is everywhere around us. There are many ways to make and collect energy from various sources like sun, wind and water. People also realize that everyday stuff can be a source of energy too. For example, riding a bike, running or just walking, etc. We simply have to change our way of thinking if we want to change the world.
So comes the idea of solar roadways. Are they the road of future? Why use roads just for driving and collecting tolls (過路費(fèi))? Why don’t we use them for collecting energy?
The US Department of Transportation recently awarded $100,000 to Solar Roadways to build the first ever Solar Road Panel. So how do these future roads work?
The Solar Road Panels will contain embedded (嵌入的) LEDs which “paint” the road lines from beneath to provide safer nighttime driving as well as to give drivers instant instructions such as detour (繞行) ahead. The road will be able to sense wildlife on the road and can warn drivers to “slow down”. There will also be embedded heating elements in the surface to prevent snow and ice buildup, providing safer winter driving.
Replacing asphalt (瀝青) roads and parking lots with Solar Roadway Panels will be a major step toward stopping climate change. Fully electric vehicles will be able to recharge along the roadway and in parking lots, finally making electric cars practical for long trips.
We just can’t wait to see more of these roads all over the world in the near future.

B.guide drivers who get lost on the highway
C.melt snow and ice soon in winter
D.help drivers see the road clearly in the sun

“How can I learn English well?” This is a question many students ask. In my opinion, the most effective way is to learn lessons by heart. If you can recite(背誦) the text and write it out, you’ve learned it fairly well. And if you can tell, in your own words, what the lesson says, you’re a very successful learner indeed. Your English will be quite perfect.
This is a difficult task. However, if you try to learn by heart only part of each lesson, you’ll find it not half so hard as you might have thought. Learning this way, you will make rapid progress. Of course, writing is also necessary. It helps you a lot on our way to success in English.
Equally important is to feel the language. You should be able to laugh at jokes and be shocked at bad news. When using English, try to forget your mother tongue. Instead of helping you, your own language gets in your way. So, never try to see English through translation.

Why does a large education nation like China have so few world renowned scientists as the US? Educationists from China and the US try to find out the answer to questions like this at a forum on the basic education strategy.

No one can change the weather. Nobody can control the weather. But if we read correctly the signs around us, we can tell what the more important changes in the weather will be. This way of telling what the weather will be like on the following day or two is called weather forecasting(天氣預(yù)報(bào)).
For many centuries and in all countries, people have studied the weather and tried to make weather forecasting. Rings around the sun are a sign of coming rain. That many people feel their joints(關(guān)節(jié)) hurt is a sign of wet weather. Some birds fly high if fine weather is coming, but they fly near the ground if rainy or stormy weather is on the way. If you see a rainbow during rainy weather, this is a sign that the weather will become clear and fine. Such rainbows come in the evening. If the stars twinkle clearly at night, then fine weather will continue. If a fog appears in the morning just above a river, then the day will be warm. If the sunset is mostly red in colour, then the following day will be fine. If a rainbow appears in the morning, rainy weather will probably come.
Most of the above sayings have been made by the people who have used their eyes and brains to make weather forecasting.

In a recent class I was asked “What is a short story?” My first answer was that it was something that could be read in one sitting and brought an illumination(啟示)to the reader, sudden and golden like sunlight cracking(破裂, 砸開) through a heavy cloud. I went on to say that in my opinion a “real” short story was closer to poetry than to a novel.
Here are some definitions of the short story. My favorite is Benet's: “something that can be read in an hour and remembered for a lifetime”. One writer said, “The theme of a novel won't fit into the framework of a short story; It's like trying to squeeze a large painting done on a wall into the frame of a miniature (微型畫)。 And as in a miniature painting, the details need to be sharp. ”
The short story is an example of one aspect of human nature. Often a character undergoes some event, something that offers him or her change. This is why it’s said that short stories usually “say something ”, often a small something, but sometimes delivered with such accuracy that the effect is strongly felt, even a life-moment for some readers, something similar to a religious experience or to witnessing a never-to-be-repeated scene in nature.
Ok, let’s form a definition here: A short story is an account, rarely over 10, 000 words or below 500 words-more commonly 1, 500 to 5, 000 words-a single-sitting read, but with enough time and weight to move the reader. It is narrow and focused to produce an effect through the story, most commonly through events affecting some change in an individual.
Writer Isabelle Allende once wrote: “Novels are, for me, adding up details, just work, work, work, then you're done. Short stories are more difficult-they have to be perfect, complete in themselves. ”
小題1:The writer of the passage is probably a ______.
A.poetB.painterC.teacherD.student
小題2:What should the ideal short story be in length?
A.a(chǎn)t most 10, 000 wordsB.below 500 wordsC.over 5, 000wordsD.a(chǎn)round 2, 000 words
小題3:The underlined word “undergoes ” in the third paragraph probably means “________ ”。
A.experiences B.discoversC.discussesD.a(chǎn)ppreciates
小題4:What’s the difference between novels and short stories?
A.Novels are too long for us to read.
B.Short stories are too short for us to read.
C.Short stories have more details than novels.
D.Short stories are more perfect and difficult than novels.
小題5:What would be the best title for the passage?
A.How Do You Write a Short Story?B.What Exactly Is a Short Story?
C.Is a Short Story Similar to Poetry?D.Are Short Stories Perfect and Complete?

Do you think it is ever a good idea for a teenager to have a credit card?
My kids watch closely as I swipe the card through the register. They’ve seen me do it hundreds, thousands of times.Cool.They are itching to swipe it through the machine themselves. When we walk out of the store with our groceries or pet food, or whatever, it’s almost as though money has not changed hands, painless, easy.
So it shouldn’t be shocking to discover that teenagers are becoming card carrying consumers in their own right. The question is, should they?
While some argue it’s best to teach kids how to use a credit card while still living under the family roof, not everyone agrees. Dave Ramsey, financial expert says getting a credit card for your teenager is actually, “an excellent way to teach him or her to be financially irresponsible.”
Now parents are required to co-sign on credit cards for children under 21.“If their name is on the credit card, then the parent may say, ‘Hey, my name is on this.Don’t get me into trouble,” says Mary Beth Pinto, a marketing professor.“When parents were the co-obligors(共同借貸人),the children caused less debt.If the parents are the co-obligors, the tendency is that the parents were explaining how to use the cards.” Still, Pinto believes parents should start the process much earlier.“Yes, there has to be teaching going on and it has to start when they’re younger. You’re not going to get rid of credit cards. They are here to stay. You have to have them. You can’t fight progress,” Pinto said.
Ramsey, however, disagrees.“Throwing teens into a pool of (credit)sharks is a sure way to guarantee a life-time of heartache,” he said.“You can make online purchases and rent a car with a credit card.Of course, you must have money in your bank account before you can make a purchase with a credit card. But paying for things with money is what you are supposed to do.”
小題1:The author mentioned her experience in Para 2 mainly to______.
A.prove the convenience of using credit cards
B.tell what impression credit cards leave on kids
C.give advice on using credit cards wisely
D.explain the pleasure credit cards bring to customers

A.eagerB.a(chǎn)fraidC.embarrassedD.thankful
小題3:What’s Ramsey’s attitude towards teens’ using credit cards?
A.He feels it is worth a try
B.He is very supportive
C.He is strongly against it
D.He considers it as a pleasant experience
小題4:Pinto will most likely agree that __________.
A.parents should let teens own their credit cards earlier
B.you shouldn’t be in control of credit cards
C.it is never good for anyone to get a credit card
D.learning to use credit cards is practical
