Not many years ago, a wealthy and rather strange old man named Johnson lived alone in a village in the south of England. He had made a lot of money in trading with foreign countries. When he was seventy-five, he gave£12,000 to the village school to buy land and equipment for a children’s playground.
As a result of his kindness, many people came to visit him. Among them was a newspaperman. During their talk, Johnson remarked that he was seventy-five and expected to live to be a hundred. The newspaperman asked him how he managed to be healthy at seventy-five. Johnson had a sense of humor. He liked whisky and drank some each day. “I have an injection (注射) in my neck each evening,” he told the newspaperman, thinking of his evening glass of whisky.
The newspaperman did not understand what Johnson meant. In his newspaper he reported that Johnson was seventy-five and had a daily injection in his neck. Within a week Johnson received thousands of letters from all over Britain, asking him for the secret of his daily injection.

There have always been a lot of commonly believed but false ideas about being fat and doing exercise. Some people believe that they can’t help putting on weight as they get older, while others hold that if they stop exercising, their muscles will turn into fat. Here are some more myths:
I’ll never lose weight --- I come from a fat family
Wrong! While we can’t change the body type we are born with, we can’t blame our genes for making us fat. There’s plenty of evidence that fatness runs in families, and the main reason is that they share the same habits of eating too much and exercise too little.
I am fat because I burn calories slowly
Wrong! Fatness is not caused by a slow metabolism(新陳代謝). If fact, although fat people consume more energy that slim people, they also fail to realize how much they eat! Keeping a diary can help you work out your daily food intake more accurately.
Exercise is boring
Wrong! Anything will become boring if you do it repetitively. The key is to develop a balanced and varied program that’s fun as well as progressive. If you enjoy a Sunday walk, take a different route. If you do Yoga, try a tai chi class. If you like swimming, set a distance or time challenge.
No pain, no gain.
Wrong! Exercise is not meant to hurt. Indeed, pain is your body telling you something’s wrong, and continuing to exercise could lead to serious injury. You may experience mild discomfort as you begin to exercise regularly, but when your body adapts to the positive changes in your lifestyle and the aches should disappear relatively quickly. If you don’t, rest and seek medical advice.
1.What does the author think about being fat?
A.It is the family genes that make people fat.
B.People are fat because they consume too little energy.
C.It is the consequence of people’s unbalanced lifestyle.
D.A diary of exercise can prevent people from becoming fat.
2.According to the author, how can we make exercise more interesting?
A.By taking varied exercise.
B.By choosing simple exercise.
C.By doing regular exercise.
D.By sticking to outdoor exercise.
3.What is the author’s opinion about “No pain, no gain” in exercising?
A.Exercise should be stopped if continuous pain is felt.
B.Keeping fit is essentially a painful experience.
C.Pain in exercise is a precondition for reaching your goal.
D.Getting used to pain leads to positive changes in your body.
4.What is the purpose of the passage?
A.To argue the importance of keeping fit.
B.To prove some medical facts about being fat and doing exercise.
C.To confirm what has long been believed about keeping fit.

How to Survive Exam Stress
Exam time is one of the most stressful in school, whether it is high school, college or graduate school. Even the best students feel the pressure. The first sign of a problem while preparing for an exam is worry. 1. If we can get rid of worries, or at least control them, then we’re in a much better position to do well on our tests. Take the following steps to survive exam stress and increase your overall performance as a result.
2. What causes you anxiety when you are studying? Too much noise? Then move to a quieter place. Delayed work? Catch up with your studies a couple nights before. That way you can save the final night before the exam to review and get a good night of sleep.
The second way to deal with worry is to replace thoughts. Suppose you wake up at three in the morning and you’re worried about an exam. What do you do? 3. Doing something productive might allow you to sleep better when you finally do go back to bed.
Another way to replace negative thoughts is to do something physically active. Work out. Take a quick walk or a nice run. 4. For example, I might worry about the exam having surprise questions that I’m not prepared to answer. But I can put those thoughts aside by reminding myself that I’ve taken many exams and I’ve handled surprise questions before.
The third option is to treat the symptoms. Keep things in perspective. Think of one final exam that causes you the most anxiety. Now think of the worst thing that could happen. If you’ve prepared, then likely the worst grade you could get is a C. And, if you’ve been applying what we’ve been talking about, then you’ll likely do no worse than a B. 5.
A. How bad is that really?
B. The first is to delete the causes.
C. Another idea is to think positive thoughts.
D. Worry robs us of energy, focus and motivation.
E. How about getting up and studying for an hour?
F. What we should do is to think positively and get rid of it.
G. So we are supposed to make our effort to improve our surroundings.

The bed should be reserved as a place for sleep, but people tend to read an iPad a lot in bed before they go to sleep.
Charles Czeisler, a professor at Harvard Medical School, and his colleagues got a small group of people for an experiment. For five days in a row, the subjects (實驗對象) read either a paper book or an iPad for four hours before sleep. Their sleep patterns were monitored all night. Before and after each trial period, they took hourly blood tests to paint a day-long picture of just how much melatonin (褪黑激素) was in their blood at any given time.
When the subjects read on the iPad as compared to the paper books, they reported feeling less sleepy at night and less active the following morning. They also took longer to fall asleep on the iPad nights, and the blood tests showed that their melatonin secretion (分泌) was delayed by an hour and a half.
The researchers conclude in today's journal article that given (考慮到)the rise of e-readers and the increasingly widespread use of e-things among children and adolescents, more research into the long-term consequences of these devices on health and safety is urgently needed. Czeisler and colleagues go on, in the research paper, to note:“Reading an iPad in bed may increase cancer risk.”
However, software has been developed that can reduce some of the blue light from the screens of phones and computers according to time of day, and there are also glasses that are made to filter (過濾) short wavelengths. While they seem like a logical solution for the nighttime tech users, it needs more research.
1.In Charles Czeislers experiment, all the subjects were asked to______.
A. sit in a row and receive the strict tests
B. have their blood tested per hour during the trial
C. read a paper book and an iPad at the same time
D. have their sleep patterns observed all night
2.The third paragraph tells us the iPad readers were likely to______.
A. feel less sleepy and tired in the day
B. become less energetic the next morning
C. have a lot more melatonin secretion
D. fall asleep more easily after reading
3.The special software recently developed can______.
A. weaken the harm done by doing nighttime e-reading
B. help prevent eyes being harmed by short wavelength
C. remove the blue light from your devices completely
D. be used in all the e-things widely and safely
4.Which title is the best one for the text?
A. Wrong behaviors before bedtime
B. New software for night e-readers
C. No e-reading in bed before sleep
D. No games on iPad in bed
