【題目】Probably no other musical instrument is as popular as the guitar around the world. Musicians use the guitar for almost all kinds of music. Country and western music would not be the same without a guitar. The traditional Spanish folk music called Flamenco could not exist without a guitar. The sound of American blues music would not be the same without the sad cry of the guitar. And rock and roll music would almost be impossible without this instrument.

Music experts do not agree about where the guitar was first played. Most agree it is ancient. Some experts say an instrument very much like a guitar was played in Egypt more than 1,000 years ago. Most experts say that the ancestor of the modern guitar was brought to Spain from Persia sometime in the 12th century. The guitar continued to develop in Spain. In the 1700s it became similar to the instrument we know today.

Many famous musicians played the instrument. The famous Italian violins Niccole Paganism played and wrote music for the guitar in the early 1800s. Franz Schubert used the guitar to write some of his famous works. In modern times Spanish guitarist Andres Segovia helped make the instrument extremely popular.

In the 1930s, Les Paul began experimenting to make an electric guitar. He invented the solid-bodied electric guitar in 1946. The Gibson Guitar Company began producing its famous Les Paul Guitar in 1952. It became a powerful influence on popular music. The instrument has the same shape and the same six strings (弦) as the traditional guitar, but it sounds very different. Les Paul produced a series of extremely popular recordings that introduced the public to this music. Listen to this Les Paul recording. It was the fifth most popular song in the United States in 1952. It is called “Meet Mister Callaghan.”

【題目】For years people had told our founders, motivational speakers Jack Canfield and Mark Victor Hansen, inspiring stories about themselves. Jack and Mark included these stories in their talks, and their audiences repeatedly asked if they had ever been published. Eventually, Jack and Mark decided to collect the best 101 stories they’d been told and put them in a book. They called it Chicken Soup for the Soul because they wanted it to provide comfort, just like their grandmothers’ cooking.

They took the book to New York, hoping to sell it to one of the big publishers, but every single one turned them down. The project appeared to have stalled until they met Peter Vegso. Peter read some of the stories and loved them, so he decided to give the book a chance, becoming Chicken Soup for the Soul founding publisher.

Chicken Soup for the Soul turned into one of the most popular and loved books ever published, selling 11 million copies around the world. Today, we’ve published more than 250 books and Chicken Soup for the Soul has become the best-selling trade paperback book series of all time.

People have connected with Chicken Soup for the Soul books deeply. Years ago, we started getting letters from readers asking for more, not just more books, but other things, too. Jack and Mark recognized that Chicken Soup for the Soul had grown into something much bigger than the book series they had created. So, in 2008, William Rouhana, Amy Newmark and Robert Jacobs bought Chicken Soup for the Soul from them. Today, we have a line of comfort foods, including healthy and balanced pet foods. We’re online now with our forums, apps and a YouTube channel. We’re working hard on a new Chicken Soup for the Soul TV show and a movie. Meanwhile, we are still collecting stories from our readers and the public, just like we’ve done since the beginning. We have new books coming out almost every month. We’re always looking for ways to share happiness, inspiration and wellness through everything we do.

【題目】The Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco, California is one of the world's most beautiful bridges. It is also one of the most visited places in the world. Vehicles cross the bridge an average of 41 million times each year. More than 1,800 hundred million vehicles have used the bridge since it opened more than 70 years ago.

The bridge was painted “International Orange” because that color went well with the natural surroundings. The color also is easier to see in the heavy fog that often covers the area. But the Golden Gate Bridge was not named for its orange color. It was named for the body of water that it crosses, the Golden Gate Strait.

The Golden Gate Strait is the entrance to the San Francisco Bay from the Pacific Ocean. The Golden Gate Bridge links the city of San Francisco with Marin County, California.

Planning for the bridge began in the 1920s when the area around San Francisco was growing. People living in the area needed another way to get to the city besides small ferries.

Joseph Strauss was the chief engineer for the project. Work began in 1934. Mr.Strauss demanded the strongest safy protections in the history of bridge building. These included the first use of “hard hats” to protect the workers' heads and special glasses to protect their eyes.

A special safety net was suspended(掛) under the bridge. This net saved the lives of 19 men during the construction. However, 11 other workers were killed when they fell from the bridge through the net. Still, this was a new safety record for the time.

The Golden Gate Bridge opened in 1937. It extends 1,280 meters across the water. The total length is 2,737 meters. It was the largest suspension bridge in the world until 1964.That is when the Verrazano Narrows Bridge opened in New York City. Today, the Golden Gate Bridge is the ninth longest suspension bridge in the world.

【1】The Golden Gate Bridge was named after ________.

C.the strait it crosses

【2】The purpose of suspending a special safety net is to ________.

One of the greatest biologists the world has ever seen was Charles Darwin. Darwin was born to a middle-class family in Shrewsbury, England, in February, 1809. His father was the leading doctor of the town.

【1】 He loved to walk through the woods looking at plants and birds. At the proper age, he was admitted into Shrewsbury School. There he studied Latin, classical literature, and ancient history. Young Charles thought that these subjects were dull and useless. He would have preferred scientific studies. 2

In 1825, at the age of sixteen, Darwin was sent to Scotland to study medicine. He studied there for two years and continued to do poorly. He once wrote to his sister that his medical courses were completely stupid. By then, Darwin’s father knew that his son would never become a doctor.

Darwin’s father then sent him to Cambridge to become a clergyman (牧師). During his Cambridge years, Darwin loved to collect beetles(甲蟲), but to him it was only a hobby. He didn’t take it seriously. 3 That was Professor John Henslow, the head of the Botany Department.

Somehow, Darwin managed to graduate from Cambridge in 1831. Upon graduation, Professor Henslow arranged for him to go with Captain Fitzroy on a survey trip around the world. During the voyage, Darwin collected rocks, bones, and insects. He took many notes on all that he observed. 4

The widely believed theory in those days was that God created each creature separately and individually. In 1859, Darwin published his famous book, The Origin of Species. 5 The theory was instantly and very strongly attacked. Darwin was accused of destroying religion and insulting (侮辱) the human race. Today, however, Darwin’s theory is considered to be one of the major discoveries of modern science.

A. As a result, he did poorly.

B. One person at Cambridge, however, did.

C. As a boy, Darwin showed a great interest in living things.

D. In it, he explained his theory of evolution by natural selection.

E. Shrewsbury was a busy market town surrounded by rich farmlands.

F. The thoughts that led to his theory of evolution were beginning to form.

G. By the time Darwin died in 1882, he was recognized as one of England's greatest scientists.
