Researchers have found more evidence that suggests a relationship between races (種族) and rates (率) of lung cancer among smokers. A new study shows that black people and Native Hawaiians are more likely to develop lung cancer from smoking. It compared their risk to whites, Japanese-Americans and Latinos.
Researchers at the University of Southern California and the University of Hawaii did the new study. The New England Journal of Medicine published the findings. The eight-year research studied more than 180,000 people. They included present and former smokers and people who never smoked. Almost 2.000 people in the study developed lung cancer.
Researchers say genetics (遺傳學(xué)) might help explain the racial and ethnic(種族的) differences. There could be differences in how people's bodies react to smoke. But environmental influences, including the way people smoke, could also make a difference.
African-Americans and Latinos in the study are reported smoking the fewest cigarettes per day. Whites are the heaviest smokers. But the scientists point out that blacks have been reported to breathe cigarette smoke more deeply than white smokers. This could fill their lungs with more of the chemicals in tobacco that cause cancer.
Scientists know that some diseases effect different groups differently. And some drug companies have begun to develop racially targeted (針對(duì)) medicines. Last June, the United States Food and Drug Administration approved a drug designed to treat heart failure in black patients. The name is BiDil. The agency called it "a step toward the promise of personalized medicine."

Carrot juice, because of its many healthy benefits, is commonly called the "magic juice". It has been found that adding carrot juice to people’s diets greatly improves their health. And its delicious taste makes it popular with all members of the family as a beverage.
Carrot juice is one of the richest sources of vitamin A that can be used in the daily diet. Lack (缺乏) of vitamin A can cause dryness and damage to the skin, nails and hair. Drinking carrot juice to increase the vitamin A in the diet is said to be good for many parts of the body, including the bones and teeth.
Drinking carrot juice is thought to be extremely helpful to the liver (肝臟), because vitamin A helps to clean the liver and reduce fat in it. And it is suggested that drinking carrot juice should be done regularly, rather than just from time to time.
Drinking carrot juice is also thought to improve the eyesight because of the vitamin A in the juice. Lack of vitamin A can lead to night blindness, which can be very dangerous, especially when the person is driving a car. Bungee jumping is an activity about jumping from a tall structure while connected to a large elastic cord(有彈性的繩子). The tall structure is usually a fixed object, such as a building, bridge or crane; but it is also possible to jump from a movable object, such as a hot-air balloon or helicopter, that has the ability to stay over one place on the ground; fixed-wing aircraft are unsuitable because they only stay high when moving quickly forward.
When the person jumps, the cord stretches to absorb (吸收)the energy of the fall, then the jumper flies upwards again as the cord jumps back. The jumper oscillates(擺動(dòng))up and down until all the energy is used up.
The word bungee first appeared around 1930 and was the name for a rubber eraser. The first modern bungee jumps were made on 1 April 1979 from the 250-foot Clifton Suspension Bridge in Bristol, by David Kirk, Chris Baker and Alan Weston of the Dangerous Sports Club. The jumpers continued with jumps in the US from the Golden Gate and Royal Gorge bridges, spreading the concept worldwide. By 1982 they were jumping from mobile cranes and hot-air balloons. Later they put on commercial(商業(yè)的)shows, which began in 1986.
As with any sport, injuries can still happen, and there have been deaths. A relatively common mistake in the cases that may cause death is to use a cord that is too long. The cord should be fully shorter than the height of the jumping place to allow it room to jumper either starts to slow down or keeps speeding up depending upon the speed of falling.

The poorer mental function seen among alcoholics, many of whom also regularly smoke cigarettes, may be partly due to the long term effects of nicotine(尼古丁),new research suggests.
“People who are also smokers are at a much higher risk,” Dr.Jennifer  M.Glass of the University of Michigan's Addiction Research Center said. In her study,“Cigarette smoking has a bad effect on IQ and thinking,” she said.
This finding may seem counterintuitive(違反直覺的),since many smokers show that they feel quicker and focused after smoking. Indeed, research shows that improved mental functioning is one of the immediate effects of nicotine exposure. Chronic(慢性的)smoking, however,is known to have the opposite effect. Studies show that up to 87 percent of alcoholics smoke cigarettes.
Yet,few studies have looked into cigarette smoking as a factor that might explain the cognitive(認(rèn)知的)lack reported among alcoholics. To search for that association,Glass and her colleagues examined brain function among 172 men from the same area, including 103 men who abused alcohol. The team found that men with higher scores on the lifetime alcohol problems scale(LAPS)and those who reported a higher number of pack years of smoking both had lower IQ scores.
Upon further research, the researchers found that smoking also appeared to be independently associated  with weaker word and space reasoning.
Thus, though smoking did not account for all of the decreased mental functioning observed among the alcohol abusers,it did seem to account for some of the effects, the report indicates.
小題1:What is the passage mainly about?
A.Cigarette smoking contributes to decreased IQ and thinking.
B.Alcohol abuse is to blame for the poorer mental function.
C.Most of the alcoholics are also heavy smokers.
D.Non-smokers mostly have higher IQ scores.
小題2:The underline sentence “Chronic smoking, however, is known to have opposite effect” in paragraph 3  suggests:
A.Chronic smoking can improve mental functioning.
B.Chronic smoking has an immediate influence on mental functioning.
C.Chronic smoking has side effect on mental functioning improvement.
D.Chronic smokers feel quicker and focused after smoking.
小題3:From the passage we can learn that .
A.cigarette smoking is not related to reasoning
B.nicotine exposure can improve mental functioning temporarily
C.the long term effects of nicotine cause alcoholics
D.men with lower scores on the LAPS have lower IQ scores
小題4:It can be inferred from the passage that .
A.many alcoholics suffer a great deal from smoking
B.giving up smoking is significantly challenging for the alcoholics
C.a(chǎn)lcoholics who do not smoke much have higher IQ scores
D.other factors can cause the poorer mental functioning besides smoking
小題5:The purpose of this passage is .
A.to warn us of the bad effects of smoking on IQ and thinking
B.to tell us why people are addicted to smoking
C.to give us some advice on how to improve IQ and reasoning
D.to compare the bad effects of alcohol and cigarette

We all know that everyone becomes a little more forgetful as they get older, but men’s minds decline more than women’s, according to the results of a worldwide survey.
General differences seem to be natural in male and female brains: Men are better at maintaining and dealing with mental images (useful in mathematical reasoning and spatial skills), while women tend to excel be good at recalling information from their brain’s files. Many studies have looked for a connection between sex and the amount of mental decline people experience as they age, but the results have been mixed.
Some studies found more age-related decline in men than in women, while others saw the opposite or even no relationship at all between sex and mental decline.
Those results could be improper because the studies involved older people, and women live longer than men: The men tested are the survivors, “so they’re the ones that may not have shown such cognitive(認(rèn)知的) decline,” said study team leader Elizabeth of the University of Warwick in England.
Scientists surveyed completed four tasks that tested sex-related cognitive skills: matching an object to its rotated form, matching lines shown from the same angle, typing as many words in a particular category as possible in the given time, e.g. “object usually colored gray”, and recalling the location of objects in a line drawing. The first two were tasks at which men are usually good; the latter are typically dominated by women. Within each age group studied, men and women performed better in their separate categories on average. And though performance declined with age for both genders, women showed obviously less decline than men overall.
小題1:According to the passage, which of the following can NOT be typed into the same category?

B.Women stand out at remembering people’s names.
C.Women do well in dealing mathematic problems.
D.Men excel at typing as many words as possible in the given time.
小題3:One important factor that affects the correctness of the results is that ________.
A.women live longer than men
B.people surveyed are all old
C.the old men tested may not have shown such cognitive decline
D.people taking part in this test came from all over the world
小題4:The author aims to tell us that _________.

A new survey finds that more than eighty percent of Internet users in the United States search for health information online. The survey found that searching online is one of the leading ways that people look for a second opinion though doctors are still the main source of health information.
Forty-four percent of people are actually looking for doctors or other providers when they search for health information online. Another finding of the survey: Two-thirds of Internet users look online for information about a specific disease or medical condition.
The Internet has also become an important source of emotional support for people with health problems. Susannah Fox says one in five Internet users has gone online to find other people who have the same condition. It was more popular among people with more serious health issues—one in four people living with chronic diseases (慢性病). And it was basically off the charts with people living with rare disease. They are so eager to find other people online who share their health concerns.
A disease is considered rare if it affects fewer than two hundred thousand people worldwide. The rise of social networking has made it easier for people with rare diseases to connect with each other and feel less alone. Social networking is also changing the way some doctors and patients communicate with each other. Dr. Jeff Livingston operates a medical center for women in Irving, Texas. His office uses password-protected software to share information with patients.
“We provide the patient full access to their medical care. Anything I can see, the patient can see. All of their notes, all of their doctor visits are right there. All of their lab work is right there.” Dr. Livingston says the software has increased efficiency, reduced costs and improved relations with patients.
小題1:From the first paragraph, we can know _________.
A.most online health information is reliable
B.more people now turn to the Internet for medical advice
C.people shouldn’t rely on the Internet for medical advice
D.doctors are no longer the patients’ first choice
小題2: The underlined words “off the charts” in Paragraph 3 mean _________.
A.very popularB.not accessibleC.far away fromD.not attractive
小題3: By using social networking, patients with rare diseases can _________.

Eating a diet high in processed(加工) food increases the risk of depression(抑郁), research suggests. What's more, people who ate plenty of vegetables, fruit and fish actually had a lower risk of depression, the University College London team found.
Data on diet among 3,500 middle-aged civil servants were compared with their emotional state five years later, a British journal reported. They split the participants into two types of diet--those who ate a diet largely based on whole food, which includes lots of fruit, vegetables and fish, and those who ate a mainly processed food diet, such as sweetened desserts, fried food, processed meat, refined(精制的) grains and high fat dairy products After accounting for factors such as gender, age, education, physical activity, smoking habits and chronic(慢性的) diseases, they found a significant difference in the future depression risk with the different diets.
Those who ate the most wholefood(全天然食物) had a 26% lower risk of future depression than those who ate the least wholefood. By contrast, people with a diet high in processed food had a 58% higher risk of depression than those who ate a diet low in processed foods.
Study author Dr. Archana Singh Manoux pointed out there was a chance that the finding could be explained by lifestyle factor they had not accounted for.(解釋原因) He also pointed in a paper that a Mediterranean(地中海) diet was associated(有關(guān)) with a lower risk of depression, but the problem with that is if you live in Britain, the likelihood (可能)of you eating a Mediterranean diet is not very high.
Dr.Andrew McCulloeh, chief executive of the Mental Health Foundation, said, this study adds to an existing body of solid research that shows the strong links between what we eat and our mental health.
He added people's diets were becoming increasingly unhealthy. The UK population is consuming (消費(fèi))less nutritious, fresh produce and more saturated(飽和) fats and sugars.

A.It is difficult for most British people to have a Mediterranean diet.
B.The Mediterranean diet is the most healthy in the world.
C.Many studies have been done on the Mediterranean diet before.
D.The Mediterranean diet is not good for depression.
小題3:Dr. Andrew McCulloch agrees that______.
A.our diets are closely related to our mental health
B.the present study needs more facts and other information
C.the UK population will become ill in the near future
D.more saturated fats and sugars should be taken in
小題4:Why might the author have written this text?
A.To tell people what a healthy diet actually is.
B.To prove people’s diets are increasingly unhealthy.
C.To encourage people to cut down on processed food.
D.To introduce some experts on the research team.
