10.Every day in the United States animals are beaten,neglected(忽視),or forced to struggle for survival.Left in exhausted conditions,they have little hope as they live out their days without the compassion(同情) they deserve.We must fight for these abused animals'rights and severely punish heartless owners.
One of the first steps in protecting animals and creating effective cruelty laws is knowing what animal cruelty actually is.There are two categories:passive cruelty and active cruelty.The first means the abuse happens as a result of neglect or lack of action.Passive cruelty might seem less serious,but that is not the case; it can lead to terrible pain and suffering,and ultimately death.Examples include starvation,dehydration(脫水),inadequate shelter in extreme weather conditions,and the failure to get medical care.
Active cruelty,on the other hand,is more well known and disturbing.Sometimes referred to as non-accidental injury,this type of abuse involves purposefully causing harm to an animal in order to feel more powerful or gain control.Active cruelty against animals should be taken very seriously,since it can be a sign that a person has serious psychological issues and may commit more acts of violence.
It is hard to tell just what drives people to harm innocent animals.According to a study,animal abusers are five times more likely to commit violent crimes against people and four times more likely to commit property crimes than others.It is vital to report people who hurt animals.While not all animal abusers become serial killers,it is important to treat every case seriously.
It's not only up to the legal system to ensure that communities across the country are aware and educated about animal cruelty.There are plenty of things everyday citizens can do.The simplest action is for people to take care of their own pets and learn the facts so they can educate others on proper animal care.Another easy way to help is by donating to or volunteering at a local animal shelter.

解答 12.B.詞義猜測題.根據(jù)Left in exhausted conditions,they have little hope as they live out their days without the compassion(同情) they deserve.可知,句意為在糟糕的條件下,他們沒有希望,因?yàn)樗麄儧]有得到他們應(yīng)得的同情.故可知,exhausted意為糟糕的.故選B.
13.D.細(xì)節(jié)理解題.根據(jù)The first means the abuse happens as a result of neglect or lack of action.可知,被動型殘忍是由于忽視或缺乏行動而產(chǎn)生的.只有不給狗狗足夠的食物符合這一條件.故選D.
14.A.段落大意題.根據(jù)第二段以及第三段內(nèi)容可知,這兩段主要介紹了被動型殘忍以及主動型殘忍是什么.故選A.

I am glad to know thatyou will come to my city to study the language and culture for a year. Here I will introduce the school first.

Looking forward to meeting you.
Yours,
LiHua.

15.Amsterdam Destination GuideAmsterdam is one of the most popular travel destinations in the world, famous for its beautiful canals, top art museum, cycling culture, and Red Light District. It is the capital and most populous city in the Netherlands and often referred to as the"Venice of the North"because of its expansive system of bridges and canals. Here are some of the key points to remember as you plan your trip to Amsterdam.
Must-See Attractions
Most visitors begin their Amsterdam adventure in the Old Centre, which is full of traditional architecture, shopping centers, and coffee shops.Don't miss the Dam Square and the areas around Spui and Nieuwmarkt. The infamous Red Light District is also m this area, and definitely worth a visit to see what the hype is about. You'll also want to check out Amsterdam's Museum Quarter in the South District, which is great for shopping at the Albert Cuyp Market and having a picnic in the Vondelpark. The top museums to visit are the Rijksmusuem, the Ann Frank House, and the Van Gogh Museum.
If You Have Time
There are several, and you should try to explore as many of them as time allows. The Canal Ring is a UNESCO World Heritage Site that was originally built to attract wealthy home owners and is a core for celebrity spotting and nightlife today. The Plantage area has most of the city's museum, including the Jewish Historical Museum, the Scheepvaart Museum, and the botanical gardens.
Free Things to Do
Have a picnic and bring a bottle of wine to relax and people-watch in Vondelpark Soak up some sun at one of city's beaches.
Take a walk along the canals, smell the flowers, and browse markets along the way Hop on one of several free ferry services across the IJ River for lovely city views.
Money Saving Tips
Unless you really want to see the tulips blooming, avoid booking between mid-March and mid-May.This is when hotel and flight prices surge.
Look for accommodations in Amsterdam's South District, where rates are generally cheaper than in the city center.
Buy train tickets at the machine instead of the counter to save a bit of money.
Instead of hiring a tour guide, hop on a canal boat. They're inexpensive and will give you a unique point of view of the city.
