Kids may need to apologize if they do something they know was wrong-like telling a lie or breaking a rule on purpose. When they do something their parents tell them not to do, or they don't do something they are supposed to do, they apologize, too.
Grown-ups can apologize, too,to other grown-ups or even to kids. After all, even grown-ups make mistakes sometimes. By apologizing when they're wrong,grown-ups can set a good example and show kids how to do the right thing and apologize when they need to.
Saying I'm sorry when you need to is the right thing to do. It does a lot of good. But by itself,it might not be enough to make everything all better again. Sometimes along with an apology,a person needs to fix the mistake or promise to do better. Sometimes doing a nice thing for the person after you apologize helps show that you really are sorry and want to be friendly again.
Sometimes a heartfelt "I'm" sorry fixes everything right away. Other times,it might take a while for someone to feel friendly after you apologize. You might need to give the other person some time. Even after you say you're sorry, you might still feel bad about what you said or did-but you can feel good about apologizing and about making up your mind to do better.
When someone apologizes to you,you might not feel like being friendly again right away. Once in a while,if a person doesn't change, you might not want to be friends anymore. You might feel glad that the other person apologized and admitted being wrong. But if someone keeps behaving in mean ways or does something that keeps hurting, you might not feel the same way anymore. Just because someone apologizes to you doesn't mean you have to be friendly again. That part is up to you.
1.The writer suggests that grown-ups should set a good example of ________.
A.working hard
B.making an apology
C.doing good deeds
D.making mistakes
2.The underlined pronoun "it" (in Paragraph 3) probably refers to ________.
A.promising to do better
B.a(chǎn) lot of good
C.fixing mistakes
D.saying I'm sorry
3.What would you like your friend to say to you if he/she hurts you?
A.I am really wrong.
B.Excuse me.
C.I beg your pardon?
D.What's wrong with you?
4.The passage mainly deals with a topic about ________.
A.politics
B.history
C.communication
D.science

Suppose you have three things: a piece of wood, a nail and a hammer. Pretend the wood is a person, and the nail is a mean rumor(語言) about that person. If you hammer the nail in, you're obviously hurting him or her. If you then pull out the nail, there's still a hole in the wood, and the damage has been done.
There are many reasons why that nail of a rumor can be so harmful. Rumors are, quite simply, a form of bullying(欺侮). When a person or a group makes up a rumor about someone or decides to spread gossip, it's usually to hurt someone, break up a friendship, or make someone less popular. It's the same thing as teasing, only it's done behind someone's back instead of to his or her face.
When you spread a rumor about someone, you're sending a signal that the person is outside the group, and somehow less worthy of friendship than others. You're making fun of that person or pointing out negative things about him or her. This can let others think that it's OK to make the person feel bad, and make him or her an outsider.
We need to be able to trust our friends, but gossip and rumors can break this trust. If you tell a personal secret to a friend, and he turns around and tells it to someone else, you might feel like you will get burned if you ever get close to him again.
Letting a rumor influence your behavior is like letting someone else make a big decision for you. Let's say you hear that a teacher plans to call a Snowy Day tomorrow because a blizzard(暴風(fēng)雪) is coming. Expecting a day off, you don't do your homework as usual. The next morning, the blizzard turns out to be nothing more than a drizzle(毛毛雨), and school isn't off after all. You get zeroes on your work.
1.If a rumor is spread about someone, others may ________.
A. keep away from him or her
B. point out his or her advantages
C. not feel he or she is an outsider
D. be hurt if getting close to him or her again
2.To tell the rumor and the teasing apart, you depend on ________.
A. whether it is painful or not
B. whether it is done behind someone
C. whether it is a kind of bullying
D. whether it is spread fast
3.From the last paragraph, we can infer that ________.
A. it is hard to keep rumors a secret
B. rumors can destroy your interest in learning
C. rumors can control your whole life
D. believing rumors can lead to bad choices
4.The purpose of this passage is to ________.
A. advise on how to deal with rumors
B. teach us how to judge a rumor
C. explain why rumors hurt
D. find out why rumors spread fast

It is very common for you to find yourself in an unfamiliar situation. 1. Yes, everyone tells you to stand on your own two feet and take responsibility for your action, but if you haven’t experienced a situation before, how can you know what to do?
We usually try our best to do everything on our own and not to rely on others, but at certain times calling for help is the best way forward. You can picture the scene of the man—it is usually a man—driving blindly around an unfamiliar town looking for an address he doesn’t know. 2. And he could get to his appointment on time. It is obvious to everybody in such a case that asking for help is not a sign of weakness, but rather the sensible thing to do.
3. For example, you are looking for a new job and need to write your resume(簡歷). If your pride prevents you from getting help and you just do the writing yourself, it may well cost the opportunity you are seeking. Similarly, when you just started a new job, you often don’t want to admit that you haven’t got the knowledge to finish a particular task, so you keep going and eventually make things worse than they were. This may lead to a diminishing(貶低) of you in the eyes of the boss. 4.
Now you can see that asking for help is not a sign of weakness but is the sensible and mature thing to do. 5. Making your life easier by asking for and using knowledgeable help is not a sign of weakness, but is actually quite a clever thing to do.

I remember the first time I got on a horse. When I was a little boy aged two, my mom agreed to let me take a short ride and that was it! From then on, I drove my parents crazy Begging for a horse.
When I was four, I had Mutism, in which children stop speaking in certain social situations. I went days, weeks months without a sound at school. At most, I might quietly whisper to a friend. I suffered silently through school until I was ten when a psychologist had an idea. He asked me what I wanted more than anything else in the world. He explained I was going to be given an opportunity to work for that. And I was permitted to whisper the answer in my mother's ear, "A horse."
I was to get a pony, but I had to live up to my end of the bargain. I had a chart of weekly tasks I had to accomplish. I had to answer the phone five times per week, something I had never done before. I had to say one word to my teacher at school and the list went on. For a child with Mutism, saying one word to someone can be like climbing Mount Qomolangma. I did everything that was asked of me and the day came. His name was Sequoia, whom I fell in love with immediately. When I was in Sequoia's presence, I forgot all about my problems and felt strong and secure.
I am a fully participating member of society these days. My horses and I made it through a master’s degree. I may have made it otherwise, but I’m not sure. I feel I owe my life to the horses and I try to give it back to them every day. They have given me the best gift I could ever imagine, my life.
