【題目】Towards evening, Jennifer was walking on the beach with a gentle breeze(微風(fēng))blowing through her hair. Looking up at the golden red sun ball, she was surprised by its color, deep red in the middle, softly fading(褪色)into yellow. She could hear nothing but the waves and the seagulls flying up above in the sky.

The atmosphere(空氣)relaxed her. This was what she needed. “It’s getting late,” she thought, “I must go home. My parents will be wondering where I am.” She wondered how her parents would react when she got home after the three days she was missing. She kept on walking, directing herself to bungalow (平房)163, where she spent every summer holiday. The road was deserted(荒蕪). She walked slowly and silently. Just in a few hundred meters, she would have been safe in her house.

It was really getting dark now. She wished she had her favorite coat on. It might keep her really warm. She imagined having it with her. This thought dissipated(消散) when she finally saw her front door. It seemed different. Nobody had taken care of the outside garden for a few days. She was shocked: her father was usually so strict about keeping everything clean and tidy, and now…

She entered the house. First, she went into the kitchen and saw a note written by her father, “Dear Ellen, there’s some coffee ready; I went looking.” But where was Ellen? On the right side of the hallway was her parents’ room. She went in and saw her. Her mother, lying on the bed, was sleeping. Her face looked so tired, as if she hadn’t slept for days. She was really pale. Jennifer would have wanted to wake her up, but she looked too tired. So Jennifer just fell asleep beside her. When Jennifer woke up, something was different. She wasn’t in her mother’s room and she wasn’t wearing the old clothes she ran away in. She was in her cozy bed in her pajamas(睡衣).

It felt so good being back home. Suddenly she heard a voice. “Are you feeling better now, dear? You know you got us very, very scared.”

【1】The author mentions the views of the beach in Para.1 in order to __________.

【2】Jennifer decided to go home because __________.

A. it was getting cold

【3】What can we infer from the passage?

A. Jennifer went home to fetch her favorite coat.

B. Jennifer’s father was so worried that he couldn’t take care of the outside garden.

C. Jennifer understood why the outside garden was left uncared for.

D. Jennifer’s father used to be too strict with her.

【4】Which of the following shows the change of Jennifer’s feeling?

A. Relaxed→Lonely→Tired→Upset.

B. Angry→Relaxed→Fearful→Comfortable.

C. Fearful→Relaxed→Cheerful→Lonely.

D. Relaxed→Anxious→Shocked→Comfortable.

【題目】Dust on furniture may be bad news for waistlines (腰圍). But it’s far too early to add dusting to a weight-loss plan. Dietary fats and other materials that make up indoor dust can send a signal to human fat cells, telling them to grow. That process, in turn, might slow the body’s rate of burning energy. Such changes could add to any weight problems a person might have.

“We don’t know what that means to long-term health and certain diseases yet,” says Heather Stapleton, one of the study’s authors. But she notes that her team’s findings also raise a question of whether pollutants in dust might play some role in the growing, global problem of obesity (肥胖).

Stapleton and her colleagues collected dust from homes and offices. Studies found that some materials in the dust could turn on a protein (蛋白質(zhì)) called PPAR-gamma 1. It’s found in many human tissues. Turning this protein on can cause fat cells to grow. Researchers think this protein may be involved in obesity. But a second study now finds evidence that certain fats are mostly to blame. Cooking oils may send out some of these fats into the air, where they eventually find their way into house dust. Or, the authors say, the fats might enter house dust as part of the hair or skin cells shed (脫落) by people or pets.

“While the findings are amazing,” says Mitchell Lazar, another study author, “these findings need to be taken as very limited.” Indeed, he adds several cautions about how the findings should be understood. “For one thing, people eat these fats in foods all of the time. That is likely to be a lot more than would be consumed from indoor dust,” he said.

【1】What do we know about PPAR-gamma 1? _____

A. It comes from dust.

B. It leads to weight gain.

C. It can help get rid of dust.

D. It only appears in human bodies.

【2】 What’s the best title for the text? _____

A. Can house dust make us fat?

B. Why is it important to clean?

C. Anything to do to deal with dust?

D. What is the best way to lose weight?

Recently, as the development of the Internet, there is a kind of language calling Web language. Some people even speak Chinese mixed with English letters. The other day our class had a discussion about if we should welcome the Web language.

Forty percent of the students think it ridiculous. They argue that it does no good helping people communicate, nor is it useful for learning English. Besides, it’ll make Chinese more standard and pure, finally ruining our mother tongue. However, 60% of our class is fond of it. They think it is simple, convenience and helpful in expressing them. What’s more, it may make the language more interesting.

Personally, it’s not good habit to use the Web language. It may be popular, but you may also make yourself be misunderstood.
