More surprising, perhaps, than the current difficulties of traditional marriage is the fact that marriage itself is alive and thriving(旺盛的). As Skolnich notes, Americans are a marrying people: relative to Europeans, more of us marry and we marry at a younger age. Moreover, after a decline(衰退)in the early 1970s, the rate of marriage in the United States is now increasing. Even the divorce(離婚)rate needs to be taken in this pro-marriage context: some 80 percent of divorced individuals remarry. Thus, marriage remains by far the preferred way of life for the vast majority of the people in our society.

What has changed more than marriage is the nuclear family. Twenty-five years ago, the typical American family consisted of the husband, the wife, and two or three children. Now, there are many marriages in which couples have decided not to have any children, and there are many marriages where at least some of the children are from the wife’s previous marriage, or the husband’s, or both. Sometimes these children spend all of their time with one parent from the former marriage; sometimes they are shared between the two former spouses(配偶).

Thus, one can find every type of family arrangement. There are marriages without children; marriages with children from only the present marriages; marriages with“full-time”children from both the present and former marriages; marriages with“full-time”children from the present marriage and“part-time”children from former marriages. There are stepfathers, stepmothers, half-brothers and half-sisters. It is not all that unusual for a child to have four parents and eight grandparents! These are enormous changes from the traditional nuclear family. But even so, even in the midst of all this, there remains one constant: most Americans spend most of their adult lives married.

By calling Americans a marrying people the writer means that ________.

  A. Americans are more traditional than Europeans

  B. Americans expect more out of marriage than Europeans

  C. there are more married couples in the USA than in Europe

  D. more of Americans, as compared with Europeans, prefer marriage and they accept it at a younger age

Divorced Americans ________ .

  A. prefer the way they live                   B. will most likely remarry

  C. have lost interest in marriage               D. are the majority of people in the society

Which of the following can be presented as the picture of today’s American families?

  A. Different types of family arrangements have become socially acceptable.

  B. A typical American family consists of only a husband and a wife.

  C. Americans prefer to have more kids than before.

  D. There are no nuclear families any more.

Though great changes have taken place in the structure of American families, ________ .

  A. the majority of Americans still have faith in marriage

  B. the functions of marriage remain unchanged

  C. most Americans prefer a second marriage

D. most Americans prefer to be single

NEW YORK—Microsoft on Monday made another effort to challenge Apple’s iPhone and Google’s Android in the exploding smartphone market—launching a wireless operating system,Windows Phone 7.
Consumers will consider it“always delightful and thoroughly mine,”Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer said at a launch event. Users can easily work with Microsoft Office contact and calendar information as well as documents created in Microsoft’s Word,Excel and PowerPoint.
The phones will not show videos built on Adobe’s Flash platform, widely used by services including YouTube and Hulu.
AT&T will offer the first Windows Phone 7 smartphone, the Samsung Focus,on Nov.8.Soon after,it will have the LG Quantum and HTC Surround. Each will cost S|  199.99 with a two-year service contract. 科目:高中英語 來源:2013-2014學年廣東省高三11月聯(lián)考英語試卷(解析版) 題型:閱讀理解

Self-confidence is an attitude which allows individuals to have positive yet realistic views of themselves and their situations. Self-confident people trust their own abilities, have a general sense of control in their lives, and believe that, within reason, they will be able to do what they wish., plan., and expect. Having self-confidence does not mean that individuals will be able to do everything. Self-confident people have expectations that are realistic. Even when some of their expectations are not met, they continue to be positive and to accept themselves.

People who are not self-confident depend too much on the approval of others in order to feel good about themselves. They tend to avoid taking risks because they fear failure. They generally do not expect to be successful. They often put themselves down and tend to ignore compliments(贊美)paid to them By contrast,self-confident people are willing to risk the disapproval of others because they generally trust their own abilities. They tend to accept themselves;they don't feel they have to conform in order to be accepted.

Many factors affect the development of self-confidence. Parents' attitudes are crucial to children's feelings about themselves, particularly in children's early years. When parents pro- vide acceptance, children receive a solid foundation for good feelings about themselves. If one or both parents are much to critical or demanding, or if they are overprotective and discourage children's moves toward independence, children may come to believe they are unqualified or inadequate.

Surprisingly, lack of self-confidence is not necessarily related to lack of ability. Instead it is often the result of focusing too much on the unrealistic expectations or standards of others, especially parents and society. Friends' influences can be as powerful or more powerful than those of parents and society in shaping feelings of one's self. Students in their college years reexamine values and develop their own identities and thus are particularly sensitive to the influence of friends.

1.Paragraph 1 mainly talks about____.

A. the sources of self-confidence

B. the benefits of self-confidence

A. refuse  B. separate  C. permit  D. obey

3.According to the passage, self-confident people tend to____.

A. be practical  B. control others

C. avoid risks  D. depend on others

4.Which of the following can we learn about self-confidence according to the passage?

A. Self-confidence is usually the symbol of special abilities.

B. Parents' protection prevents children's self-confidence development.

C. Parents and friends matter in building one's self-confidence.

D. College students are the least self-confident group in society.

5.What might the author most probably continue to talk about in the following passage?

A. How we can become more acceptable.

B. Lack of self-confident has many side effects.

C. What self-confident children usually get from parents.

D. What one should avoid in building self-confidence.

It's common for kids of all ages to experience school anxiety - school-related stress. This is often most apparent at the end of summer when school is about to start again, but it can occur year-round.Where does the stress and anxiety come from?

Teachers

A good experience with a caring teacher can cause a lasting impression on a child's life—so can a bad experience. While most teachers do their best to provide students with a positive educational experience, some students are better suited for certain teaching styles and classroom types than others. If there's a mismatch (不協(xié)調(diào)) between student and teacher, a child can form lasting negative feelings about school or his own abilities.

Friends

Friends can also be a source of stress.Concerns about not having enough friends, not being in the same class as friends, not being able to keep up with friends in one particular area or another, and interpersonal conflicts are a few of the very common ways kids can be stressed by their social lives at school.Dealing with these issues alone can cause anxiety in even the most confident kids.

Bullies (欺凌弱小者)

Things have changed in the world of bullies since I was a kid.The good news is that

teachers and parents are paying more attention. Many schools now have anti-bullying pro-

grams and policies.Though bullying does still happen, help is generally more easily accessible

than before.

The bad news is that bullying has gone high-tech.Many students use the Internet, cell phones and other media devices to bully other students, and this type of bullying often gets very aggressive. One reason is that bullies can be anonymous (匿名的) and enlist other bullies to make their targets miserable.Another reason is that they don't have to face their targets. So it's easier to get rid of any empathy that they may otherwise feel. There are ways to fight against "cyber-bullying", but many parents aren't aware of them - and many bullied kids feel too overwhelmed to deal with the situation.
