I want to make the most of every day. And, like most people, I've that the best way to do it is to let go of past failures. But that's not all. One can never fully today while thinking too much about past successes, either. People never while resting comfortably on their laurels (榮譽(yù)). The is that sometimes our successes hold us back more than our failures!

I once a story about the Oscar owner, actor Clark Gable. A friend Gable one afternoon at the actor's home. She brought along her son, who was playing happily with toy cars on the floor. He he was racing those cars around a great track, which in was an imaginary circle around a golden statue (雕像). The small statue the boy played with was actually the Oscar Clark Gable for his performance in the 1934 movie It Happened One Night.

When his mother told him the time had come to ,the little boy asked the actor, “Can I have this?” to the Oscar.

“Sure,” he smiled. “It's yours.”

The horrified mother . “Put that back immediately!”

Giving the child the golden statue, Clark Gable said, “Having the Oscar around doesn't mean anything to me; it does.” The actor seemed to know that past success could be a hammock (吊床) upon which he may be tempted to , rather than a springboard setting him to begin a new start.

You may have learned to let go of past and mistakes in order to free the present. But will you forget past successes and achievements in order to free the ?Will your past be a springboard or a restful hammock?

“I like the of the future better than the history of the past,” said Thomas Jefferson. I . After all, the future, not the past, is where the rest of your life will be lived.

The hardest arithmetic(算術(shù)) to master is how to count our blessings.

According to legend, a young man while crossing the desert a spring of delicious crystal-clear water. The water was sweet that he filled his leather canteen he could bring some back to a tribal elder who had been his teacher.

After a four-day journey he the water to the old man who took a deep , smiled warmly and his student greatly for the sweet water. The young man returned to his village with a heart.

Later, the teacher let another student taste the water. He , saying it was awful. It had become sour because of the old leather container.

The student his teacher: “Master, the water was . Why did you pretend to like it?”

The teacher replied, “You tasted the water. I tasted the gift. The water was only the container for an act of loving-kindness and could be sweeter.”

I think we understand this lesson best when we receive innocent gifts of from young children. it’s a greeting card or a bunch of flowers, the natural and proper is appreciation and expressed thankfulness because we treasure the idea the gift.

Gratitude doesn’t always come . Unfortunately, most children and many adults value only the thing given the feeling reflected in it. We should remind ourselves and teach our children about the beauty and purity of of gratitude. After all, gifts from the heart are really gifts of the heart.

Once upon a time, there was a lovely vegetable field, on which grew a very thick tree. Both the vegetables and the tree gave the place a wonderful appearance, which was the joy of the garden’s owner. What no one knew was that the vegetables in the field and the tree couldn’t stand each other. The vegetables hated the tree’s shadow, because it left them only just enough light to survive. The tree, on the other hand, hated the vegetables because they drank nearly all the water before it could get to him, leaving him with just enough to survive.

The situation became so extreme that the vegetables got totally fed up and decided to use up all the water in the ground so that the tree would dry up. The tree answered back by refusing to give the vegetables shadow from the hot midday sun, so they both began to dry up. Before long, the vegetables were really thin and the tree’s branches were drying up.

Neither of them thought that the gardener, on seeing his vegetable field becoming worse, would stop watering it. When he did that, both the tree and the vegetables really learned what thirst was. There seemed to be no solution, but one of the vegetables, a small courgette(小胡瓜), understood what was going on, and decided to deal with it. Despite the little water and the unbearable heat, the little courgette did all he could to grow, grow...He managed to grow so big that the gardener started watering the field again. The gardener wanted to enter that beautiful big courgette in some gardening contest.

And so the vegetables and the tree realized that it was better to help each other than to fight. They should really learn how to live in harmony with those around them, doing the best they could. So they decided to work together, using both the shadow and the water in the best combination to grow good vegetables. Seeing how well they were doing, the gardener now gave the best of care to his vegetable field, watering it better than any other field for miles around.

One night, when I was eight, my mother gently asked me a question I would never forget. “Sweetie, my company wants to me but needs me to work in Brazil. This is like your teacher telling that you’ve done and allowing you to skip a grade(跳級(jí)), but you’ll have to your friends. Would you say yes to your teacher?” She gave me a hug and asked me to think about it. I was puzzled. The question kept me for the rest of the night. Back home, I myself that what my mother could do, I could, too. If she to live in Rio all by herself, I, too, could learn to be . I learn how to take care of myself and set high but achievable .

My mother is now back with us. But I will never forget what the has really taught me. Sacrifices in the end. The separation between us has proved to be for me.
