One Saturday morning after breakfast, I returned to my dormitory and saw the house parent chasing the beautiful butterflies, hundreds of which lived in the bushes around the orphanage. I carefully watched as he caught these beautiful creatures, one after another, and then took them from the net and stuck straight pins through their head and wings, pinning them onto a heavy cardboard sheet.

How cruel it was to kill something of such beauty. When the house parent went inside to answer the phone, I walked up to the cardboard and looked at the butterfly that he had just pinned to the large paper. It was still moving about, so I reached down and touched it on the wing, causing one of the pins to fall out. It started flying around and around, trying to get away but it was still pinned by one wing with another straight pin. Finally its wing broke off and the butterfly fell to the ground, still trembling. I tried to let it fly away before the house parent came back. But I failed.

When the house parent came back,he was angry with me though I didn't admit doing any?thing. He picked up the cardboard paper and started hitting me on the head. There were all kinds of butterfly pieces going everywhere. He threw the cardboard down on the ground and told me to pick it up and put it in the garbage can inside the back room of the dormitory and then he left. I sat there in the dirt for the longest time trying to fit all the butterfly pieces back together so I could bury them whole, but it was too hard to do. So I prayed for them and put them in an old torn-up shoebox and I buried them in the ground near the blackberry bushes.

Every year when the butterflies would return to the orphanage and try to land on me,I would try and shoo them away because they did not know that the orphanage was a bad place to live and a very bad place to die.

Life's greatest joys and its greatest sorrows often come from the relationships we have de?veloped with others. In fact, our existence is quite dependent upon this interaction with other in?dividuals and groups of Individuals.

In our world today,it seems that most people struggle for happiness through pleasant physi?cal surroundings and economic security. These are great, but if there is conflict in human rela?tions ,these things do not bring happiness. Think about the last time you were having an argu?ment or a disagreement with one of your co-workers,your boss, your friend,or a family mem?ber. Even though you might have been having some success in many areas of your life, did you find yourself still feeling some discomfort due to the stress in that particular relationship? On the contrary, you may know people who are happy in severe poverty and/or with physical stress if they have meaningful, pleasant relations with those around them.

Consider the most relationship that you have ever had with any individual. To some degree it probably is or was marked by absolute honesty, deep levels of trust, respect for that person's skills, knowledge,or capabilities, open communication, acceptance of differing views, and lit?tle concern for images.

In an effort to make the relationships we currently have the best that they can be,remember that persuasion usually cannot take place unless there is some sort of close, meaningful connec?tion between the two people involved. The result will be a relationship of respect and progres?sion.

Many of us have difficulty in accepting the faults and weaknesses of others, such as co?workers ,work leaders, family members, or members of our social or religious groups. Our tendency to demand perfection of others can cause us to lose sight that we,ourselves, are less than perfect. Undoubtedly, there are differences among us. Some of us are even unpleasant. Others may have cultural differences that are blocks that affect us. But learning to look for the similarities instead of those things that set us apart, embracing differences, and seeing the best in others rather than the worst will lead to relationships of deep respect and lasting value.

Latin America and other poor regions of the world will bear the impact(影響) of climate change, a top official from the organization that shared this year's Nobel Peace Prize said.

The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) ,a UN network of scientists, was awarded the prize along with former US Vice President AI Gore for their work warning the pub?lic of the peril of global warming.

"The results of the IPCC show very clearly the impact of climate change will be much seve?rer for the poorest groups and Latin America is included in that”,said IPCC vice chairman Mo?han Munasinghe of Sri Lanka.

He said water management issues were likely to be the most pressing problem caused by global warming in Latin America. Dry areas will become much drier and other areas will face increased floods and associated waterbome diseases like malaria and dengue fever.

He said in spite of the problems faced by Latin America, the region is very practical in dealing with the issue.

"My sense is that Latin American countries have been much more responsive(反應(yīng)積極的) to the issue of climate change because they feel much more vulnerable(脆弱的) ,"Munasinghe said. "For North America, particularly the United States, the reaction is more defensive."

Brazilian Environment Minister Marina Silva said, "Global warming is a burden(負擔(dān))shared by both developing and developed nations. If we are to reduce our "greenhouse" gas e-mission by 100 percent, without richer nations reducing theirs by at least 80 percent, we will still be affected.”

(   ) 5. Why were IPCC and AI Gore awarded with the Nobel Peace Prize?

A.They were working together to fight global warming.

B.They stopped the global warming becoming severer.

C.They warned the public of the impact of climate change on poor regions.

D.He predicted the influences of developed nations on climate change.

(   ) 6. The underlined word "peril" in the second paragraph probably means .

   A. danger   B. force   C. possibility   D. range

(   ) 7. We can learn from the last but one paragraph that Mohan Munasinghe seems to       .

A.be blaming the USA for its reaction to global warming

(   ) 8. Marina Silva believes that

A.developing nations should learn from developed nations to fight global warming

B.developed nations have a bigger role to play in solving the problem of global warming

C.developed nations have made more contribution to reducing the impact of global warming

D.developing nations are able to do little in solving the problem of global warming

There are some parts of the world where earthquakes often happen, but millions of people still choose to live in these areas. As a consequence, several technologies have evolved to help make buildings more resistant to collapse during an earthquake, many of them using roller Or ball bearings(軸承) .

People usually think of ball bearings as a way to decrease friction(摩檫) ,and question how that use could apply to things that don't typically move, like buildings, in scenarios like earth?quakes. However, bearings aren't intended to enable things to move effortlessly. They've just there to allow buildings to move at all. Damage from earthquakes is caused when structures are shaken and forced to move, and their rigid(堅硬的) forms don't permit them to do so without giving way and breaking. By using strategically-placed bearings, builders have observed a way to isolate the bases of buildings from the rest of their structures, making it possible for them to move independently without causing greater stress on the building's otherwise solid frame. Some of these bearings are large and rubber, while other buildings use huge linear bearings. Some?times ,these earthquake-proofing technologies are even used to help skyscrapers be built on soft ground, and enable very tall buildings to move with the wind. Without them, these buildings would remain rigid, and be easier to falling over.

A number of well-known companies produce bearings for builders looking to buy bearings for their seismic(地震的) applications. For one,Timken produces large,roller-style Timken bearings that are used in base isolation earthquake technology. NSK bearings also come in a range of shapes and materials for different seismic and building applications. Not all of the beat?ings carried by seismic bearing distributors resemble the ball bearings that a lot of people are used to seeing in everyday life. Some might look like large rubber discs, while others look like a series of pillars. Regardless of what they look like, these are all bearings, and all provide the purpose of helping large buildings to survive an earthquake.

Though no approach of building is completely earthquake-proof, things like roller Timken bearings help save lives. It's hard to precisely test earthquake-proofing technology without being able to try it out in an actual earthquake, but every day builders and manufacturers get closer and closer to creating better solutions for surviving seismic disasters.

(   ) 5. Which of the following is true about rigid forms of structures during an earthquake?

   A.They prevent structures from breaking.

B.They allow structures to move if necessary.

C.They make structures resistant to collapse.

D.They don't allow structures to make necessary move.

(   ) 6. Why does NSK produce various kinds of bearings?

A.To make them suitable for different buildings.

B.To use them in different parts of a building.

C.To satisfy the needs of different people.

D.To use them in different areas of life.

(   ) 7. We can infer from the last paragraph that earthquake-proofing technology        .

A.will be put into use very soon

B.has been tested in an actual earthquake

C.will be replaced by better solutions

D.will develop better in the future

(   ) 8. The main purpose of the author is to        .

A.analyze why buildings collapse during an earthquake

B.explain the use of bearings during an earthquake

C.tell us how to make buildings more resistant to an earthquake

D.advertise for bearings made by Timken
