As young students, you have many dreams. These dreams can be very big, such as winning the Nobel Prize;they can also be small, such as becoming one of the best students in your class.

Once you find a dream, what do you do with it? Do you ever try to make your dream real?

Andrew Matthews,an Australian writer, tells us that making your dreams real is life's biggest challenge. You may think you’re not very good at some school subjects,or that it's impossible for you to become a writer. Those kinds of ideas stop you from realizing your dream.

In fact ,everyone can realize his dream. The first thing you must do is to remember what your dream is.

Don’t let it leave your heart. Keep telling yourself what you want every day and then your dream will come true faster. You should know that a big dream is,in fact, made up of many small dreams.

You must also never give up your dream. There will be difficulties on the road to your dreams. But the biggest difficulty comes from yourself. You need to decide what is the most important. Studying instead of watching TV will help you to get better exam results, while saving five yuan instead of buying an ice cream means you can buy a new book.

As you get closer to your dream,it may change a little. This is good as you have the chance to learn something more useful and find new hobbies.(浙江省杭州市十三中教育集團2012 —2013學年八年級下學期 檢測英語試題)

You never know these people who may be a classmate,a neighbour or a friend一but when you lock your eyes on them, you know at that very moment they will influence your life in some ways.

Sometimes things that happen to you may seem unpleasant, painful,or frustrating at first. But in another way,you find that without getting over those difficulties you would have never realized your ability, strength or will power (意志力) .

If someone loves you, give love back to them in the way you can,not only because they love you,but because in a way, they are teaching you to love and how to open your heart and eyes to things.

If someone hurts you,or breaks your heart, forgive (原諒) them, for they have helped you learn about trust and the importance of being careful of people around.

Napoga is a 12-year-old girl in Ghana (加納) ,Africa. It is hard for her family to get clean water. Every morning, she leaves home at half past five to get clean water for her family in a village far away. It takes her six hours to get enough clean water for daily cooking and drinking. She has no time to go to school or to play with her friends. Millions of people in the world are like Napoga. They can't get enough clean water to keep healthy.

Earth Day is on April 22. But on all other days?we must also remember it. The water we use is the most important natural resource (自然資源) on the earth.

Water covers 70% of the earth's surface. But most of that is sea water. We can't use it for very many things. Fresh water covers only 1% of the earth's surface.

You probably feel lucky that your life isn’t as hard as Napoga's. But that doesn’t mean you don't have to worry about water. We all face serious water problems. One of them is water pollution. All kinds of things from cars, factories, farms and homes make our rivers, lakes, and oceans dirty. Polluted water is very bad for people to drink. And dirty water is bad for fish, too. Now,34% of all kinds of fish are dying out.

How do cars and factories make our water dirty? First, they pollute the air. Then, when it rains, the rain water comes down and makes our drinking water dirty. Dirty rain, called acid rain (酸雨) ,is also bad for plants, animals and buildings.

Scientists say that in 30 years, more than half of the people in the world won’t have enough clean water. We have to learn how to save more water for ourselves and our children. Here is some advice for saving water:

. Turn off the water while you brush your teeth. You can save as much as 450 liters (升) each month.

. Leaky taps (漏水的龍頭) waste a lot of water. Fix them right away!

. You can easily cut your 10-minute showers in half— and you’ll be just as clean.

. When you wash dishes, don't let the water run.

. Only wash clothes when you have a lot to wash. If your washing machine isn’t full, you’re wasting water!

If you can speak English, you know a lot of English words. You can read, speak and understand. But there is another kind of language you need to know—the language of the body.

All over the world, people “talk” with their hands, with their heads and with their eyes. When Japanese people meet, they bow (鞠躬;彎腰) . When Indians meet, they put their hands together. What do American and British people do?

Americans are more informal (不拘禮節(jié)的) than the British. They like to be friendly. They use first names;they ask questions and they talk easily about themselves. When they sit down, they like to relax in their chairs and make themselves comfortable.

British people are more reserved (矜持的,緘默的) . They take more time to make friends. They like to know you before they ask you something of your home.

When British and American people meet someone for the first time, they shake hands. They do not usually shake hands with people they know well. Women sometimes kiss their women friends, and men kiss women friends. When a man meets a man friend,he just smiles, and says “Hello”. Men do not kiss each other,or hold hands. Even fathers and sons do not often kiss each other.

科目:高中英語 來源:2015-2016學年吉林長春十一高中高二上學期期末英語試卷(解析版) 題型:閱讀理解

You may not pay much attention to your daily elevator ride. Many of us use a lift several times during the day without really thinking about it. But Lee Gray, PhD, of the University of North Carolina, US, has made it his business to examine this overlooked form of public transport. He is known as the “Elevator Guy”.

“The lift becomes this interesting social space where etiquette (禮儀) is sort of odd (奇怪的),” Gray told the BBC. “They (elevators) are socially very interesting but often very awkward places.”

We walk in and usually turn around to face the door. If someone else comes in, we may have to move. And here, according to Gray, lift users unthinkingly go through a set pattern of movements. He told the BBC what he had observed.

He explained that when you are the only one inside a lift, you can do whatever you want – it’s your own little box. If there are two of you, you go into different corners, standing diagonally (對角線地) across from each other to create distance. When a third person enters, you will unconsciously form a triangle. And when there is a fourth person it becomes a square, with someone in every corner. A fifth person is probably going to have to stand in the middle.

New entrants to the lift will need to size up the situation when the doors slide open and then act decisively. Once in, for most people the rule is simple – look down, or look at your phone.

Why are we so awkward in lifts?

“You don’t have enough space,” Professor Babette Renneberg, a clinical psychologist at the Free University of Berlin, told the BBC. “Usually when we meet other people we have about an arm’s length of distance between us. And that’s not possible in most elevators.”

In such a small, enclosed space it becomes very important to act in a way that cannot be construed (理解) as threatening or odd. “The easiest way to do this is to avoid eye contact,” she said.

1.The main purpose of the article is to _____.

A. tell us some unwritten rules of elevator etiquette

B. share an interesting but awkward elevator ride

C. remind us to enjoy ourselves in the elevator

D. analyze what makes people feel awkward in an elevator

2.According to Gray, when people enter an elevator, they usually _____.

A. turn around and greet one another

B. try to keep a distance from other people

C. look around or examine their phone

D. make eye contact with those in the elevator

3.The writer wrote the passage in a tone of ___________.

A. disapproved B. supportive

C. negative D. objective

4.Which of the following describes how people usually stand when there are at least two people in an elevator?
