Human life has not only been changed within the past few hundred years.it has been revolutionized. In the old days there was little difference between the houses.dress and food of those who were chiefs and those who were their servants. There was, to a large degree.social equality. The contrast(差別)today between the palaces of the millionaires and the cottages of the laborers shows us the change which has come with civilization(文明).

This change.however.is not to be regretted.but welcome as highly beneficial(helpful). For progress there must be homes of great wealth to keep the best things of civilization. Therefore it is much better to have this great difference between rich and poor than to have general poverty.Neither master nor servant was as rich in the “good old times” as today.Whether the change is for good or bad.it has come, and it is beyond our power to turn back.Therefore.it should be accepted and made the best of.It is a waste of time to discuss what must happen.

By today’s production methods the world gots goods of excellent quality at prices which even people of 25 years of age would have thought unbelievable. The poor enjoy what once the rich could not.The poor are more richly clothed and better housed. The laborer now has more comforts than the farmer had many years ago.The farmer has more luxuries(奢侈品)than the landlord had.The landlord has more rare books and pictures and more works of art than the king could have in older tires.

1.The writer thinks that the contrast between the living conditions of the workers and those of the rich________.

A.should be regretted                                  B.is not a bad thing

C.will cause a lot of trouble                           D.should not be accepted

B.Both the rich and the poor live better than before

C.The rich live better that before but the poor don’t

D.The poor live better than before but the rich don’t

3.According to the writer,it is much better to have a great difference between the rich and the poor than to have general poverty because ________.

A.social equality is not as important as it used to

B.the poor people have more comforts than before

C.it is not right for master and servant to live a like

D.this difference helps to keep the best things of civilization for progress

4.It is inferred but not mentioned that __________.

A.the landlord is more interested in art today than the king was in older times.

Besides giving off gases and dusts into the air, humans produce waste that is poured on the environment. Often, this waste produced by major industries and people is harmful to both nature and human life.
One of the main causes of the large amount of dangerous waste is that people do not realize how large a problem it is. Because it can be simply removed and sent to a landfill(廢渣填埋場),the problem is often believed to end there. In addition, industries have often shown an unwillingness to find ways to deal with dangerous waste because of the related expenses. Many industries and governments build simple landfills to store waste, and often just pour waste chemicals into nearby bodies of water. Often, chemicals used for industrial production cause dangerous forms of waste. The amount of these chemicals has increased greatly in the past, but it is often difficult and expensive to get rid of these chemicals or to store them in a way safe to human life and the environment.
Every year, major health problems result from dangerous waste. Sadly, it is often only after someone has died or become seriously ill that governments will take measures to reduce levels of harmful waste.
Some governments have realized how serious the dangerous waste problem is and are now trying to settle this problem. They are also trying to limit the amount of waste industries are allowed to produce.
Not only governments but ordinary people as well must work together to solve the problem. They can choose not to buy those products which require the production of dangerous waste, and produce less harmful waste themselves. Many scientists think that waste production can be cut. The waste can be reduced by at least one third using existing technologies and methods.

What will people die of 100 years from now? If you think that is a simple question, you have not been paying attention to the revolution that is taking place in bio-technology(生物技術(shù)). With the help of new medicine, the human body will last a very long time. Death will come mainly from accidents, murder and war. Today’s leading killers, such as heart disease, cancer, and aging itself, will become distant memories.

In discussion of technological changes, the Internet gets most of the attention these days. But the change in medicine can be the real technological event of our times. How long can humans live? Human brains were known to decide the final death. Cells(細(xì)胞) are the basic units of all living things, and until recently, scientists were sure that the life of cells could not go much beyond l20 years because the basic materials of cells, such as those of brain cells, would not last forever. But the upper limits will be broken by new medicine. Sometime between 2050 and 2100, medicine will have advanced to the point at which every 10 years or so, people will be able to take medicine to repair their organs ( The medicine, made up of the basic building materials of life, will build new brain cells, heart cells, and so on—in much the same way our bodies make new skin cells to take the place of old ones.)

It is exciting to imagine that the advance in technology may be changing the most basic condition of human existence, but many technical problems still must be cleared up on the way to this wonderful future.

Like distance runners on a measured course, all of us will move through time in a roughly predictable pattern.

In the first stage of our lives,we develop and grow, reaching toward the top of physical vitality(活力).

After we grow up,however, the body begins a process of gradually wearing out.

A new awareness of physical fitness may help lengthen our years of health and vitality, yet nothing we do will work to stop the unavoidable force of aging.

Most of the changes of aging take place deep inside the body. The lungs become less able to take in oxygen.Powerful muscles gradually lose their strength. The heart loses power and pumps less blood.Bones grow easier to break.

Finally, we meet a stress,a stress that is greater than our physical resistance.Often,it is only a minor accident or chance infection(a disease caused by virus),but this time,it brings life to an end.

In 1932,a classic experiment nearly doubled the lifetime of rats, simply by cutting back the calories in their diet The reason for the effect was then unknown.

Today, at the University of California at Berkley, Dr.Paul Seagle has also greatly lengthened the normal lifetime of rats. The result was achieved through a special protein limited diet, which had a great effect on the chemistry of the brain.Seagle showed that within the brain, specific chemicals control many of the signals that influence aging.By changing that chemical balance, the clock of aging can be reset.

For the first time, the mystery of why we age is being seriously challenged.Scientists in many fields are now making striking and far-reaching discoveries.

An average lifetime lasts 75 years, yet in each of us lies a potential for a longer life.If we could keep the vitality and resistance to disease that we have at age twenty, we would live for 800 years.

1.What does the underlined word “it” refer to?

A.Physical vitality.   B.Stress.           C.Aging.           D.Physical resistance.

2.Which of the following is not a change of aging?

A.People gradually lose their muscle strength.

B.Bones tend to break more easily.

C.The heart loses power and pumps less blood.

D.The lungs become unable to take in oxygen.zxxk

3.The author believes the following except that

A.human's life pattern is predictable

B.physical fitness can't stop the force of aging

C.human's lifetime will last longer than 75 years

D.a(chǎn)ll of the changes of aging take place deep inside the body

4.How did Dr.Paul Seagle lengthen the lifetime of rats in his experiment?

A.By keeping their physical fitness.          B.By cutting the calories in their diet.

C.By resetting their clock of aging.           D.By limiting the protein in their diet.

5.What is probably the best title for the article?

A.Two Great Experiments

B.The Mystery of Human Life

C.The Breakthrough in the Study of Aging

D.Ways to lengthen Human Life
