【題目】As a contestant on The X Factor, 13-year-old Rachel Crow seemed to have exactly what it took to win: strong praise from judges, a beautiful voice, and a lovable personality. Then she was voted off.

When the results were read, Rachel broke down, sobbing and screaming for her mom, who had to rush onstage to comfort her.

It was a humiliating moment for Rachel, but a great moment for The X Factor just the kind of drama TV audiences love.

Some fans said Rachel’s breakdown proved she was too young to be on the show. And though there was nothing exceptional about someone Rachel’s age being on reality TV children and teens appear in everything from Dance Moms to The Biggest Loser Rachel’s meltdown did raise an important question: Should kids be on reality TV at all? Many psychologists are saying “No”.

It’s well known that early fame can be harmful and that many former child stars struggle as adults. Being followed by photographers 24/7 and having everything they do reported in newspapers and blogs can be hard for young people to deal with. It can make them feel as though their worth depends on what others say. Reality TV takes the pressure of early fame to a whole new level. Kids on reality TV don’t play characters. They play themselves. Cameras expose their most private moments for our entertainment.

Laws exist that protect child actors, making sure they go to school and limiting the hours they can work. In many states, though, these laws do not apply to kids on reality TV, because they are not considered actors.

Dangers aside, there’s no doubt that reality shows do offer exciting opportunities and the potential to make money. A 7-year-old girl who attends a TV show earns about $36,000 per season. After competing on The X Factor, One Direction went on to become international stars. Even Rachel made out OK. She released an album and voices a character in the movie Rio 2. And she showed resilience (適應(yīng)力). “I’m not feeling great, but I’ll be fine,” she told reporters after breakdown. “I’m Rachel still.”

A. how kids should deal with pressure

B. why early fame can be harmful to kids

C. the importance of kids being themselves

D. what some former child stars have achieved

4What can we infer from the last paragraph?

A. Kids should look for more challenges.

B. Reality shows may change a kid forever.

C. Reality shows can benefit kids in some ways.

D. Kids can earn little money from reality shows.

【題目】The common cold is the world’s most widespread illness, which is probably why there are more myths about it than any of the other illnesses.

The most widespread mistake of all is that colds are caused by cold. They are not. They are caused by viruses passing on from person to person. You catch a cold by coming into contact, directly or indirectly, with someone who already has one. If cold causes colds, it would be reasonable to expect the Eskimos to suffer from them forever. But they do not. And in distant and isolated Arctic regions explorers have reposed being free from colds until coming into contact again with infected(感染的) people from the outside world by way of packages and mail dropped from airplanes.

At the Common Cold Research Unit in England, volunteers took part in experiments in which they gave themselves to the discomforts of being cold and wet for long periods of time. After taking hot baths, they put on bathing suits, allowed themselves to be doused(浸入) with cold water, and then stood about dripping wet in drafty(通風(fēng)的) room. Some wore wet socks all day while others exercised in the rain until close to complete tiredness. Not one of the volunteers came down with a cold unless a cold virus was actually dropped in his nose.

If,then, cold and wet have nothing to do with catching colds, why are they more frequent in the winter? Despite the most painstaking research, no one has yet found the answer. One explanation offered by scientists is that people are more likely to stay together indoors in cold weather than at other times, and this makes it easier for cold viruses to be passed on.

No one has yet found a cure for the cold. There are drugs and pain suppressors(止痛片) such as aspirin, but all they do is to relieve the symptoms.

1】The fact that the Eskimos don’t suffer colds shows that ________.

A. colds are really full of myths

B. viruses are the factors causing colds

C. colds are more serious than other illnesses

D. the idea that cold leads to colds doesn’t stand up

2】The experiments mentioned in Paragraph 3 made it clear that ________.

A. it was viruses not wet and cold that made people have colds

B. taking hot baths made the volunteers easy to be tired

C. being doused with cold water did harm to ones body

D. people who would like to exercise in the rain got colds more easily

3】According to the passage, colds are commonly seen in winter because ________.

A. staying together indoors makes it easier for viruses to pass on

B. viruses can go into people’s warm bodies more easily in winter

C. there is great difference between indoor and outdoor temperature

D. People are usually weak because of the extreme cold in winter

4】The passage mainly discusses ________.

A. the experiments on colds

B. the myths about colds

C. the reason and the way people catch colds

D. the continued spread of common colds

【題目】Some colors people see late at night could cause signs of the condition mental health experts call clinical depression(臨床抑郁癥). That was the finding of a study that builds on earlier study findings. They show that individuals who live or work in low levels of light overnight can develop clinical depression.

Doctors use the word clinical depression to describe severe form of depression. Signs may include loss of interest or pleasure in most activities, low energy levels and thoughts of death or suicide.

In the new study, American investigators designed an experiment that exposed hamsters(倉鼠)to different colors. The researchers chose hamsters because they are nocturnal, which means they sleep during the day and are active at night. The animals were separated into four groups. One group of hamsters was kept in the dark during their night-time period. Another group was placed in front of a blue light, a third group slept in front of a white light, while a fourth was put in front of a red light. After four weeks, the researchers noted how much sugary water the hamsters drank. They found that the most depressed animals drank the least amount of water.

Randy Nelson, at Ohio State University, says animals that slept in blue and white light appeared to be the most depressed. “What we saw is that these animals didn’t show any sleep interruptions at all but they did mess up biological clock (生物鐘) genes and they did show depressive sign but if they were in the dim red light, they did not.” He says there’s a lot of blue in white light. This explains why the blue light and white light hamsters appear to be more depressed than the hamsters seeing red light or darkness.

【1】From the text we know that ________ made the hamster feel depressed.

A. the amount of the water B. the color of the light

C. the loss of pleasure D. the level of energy

【2】What was the purpose of the experiment on hamsters?

A. To show how well they slept.

B. To see how much sugary water they drank.

C. To explain why they liked dark colors.

D. To find out what caused the depression on them.

【3】The author explains the clinical depression by _________.

A. reporting an experiment process

B. presenting research data

C. setting down general rules

D. giving his own experience

【4】Where can we probably find the text?

A. In a tourist guidebook. B. In a physics textbook

C. In a science magazine. D. In an official announcement.
