A student is learning to speak British English. He wonders: Can I communicate with Americans? Can they understand me? Learners of English often ask: What are the differences between British and American English? How important are these differences?
Certainly there are some differences between British and American English. There are a few differences in grammar. For example, speakers of British English say “in hospital” and “Have you a pen?” Americans say “in the hospital!” and “Do you have a pen?” Pronunciation is sometimes different. Americans usually sound theirs in words like “bird” and “hurt”. Speakers of British English do not sound theirs in these words. There are differences between British and American English in spelling and vocabulary. For example, “colour” and “honour” are British, “color” and honor” are American.
These differences in grammar, pronunciation, spelling and vocabulary are not important. However, for the most part, British and American English are the same language.

【題目】根據(jù)短文理解,選擇正確答案。
Many studies have shown that the company of pets can help lower blood pressure and raise chances of recovering from a heart attack, reduce loneliness and help control body weight.
Any pet owner will tell you how much joy a pet brings. For some, an animal provides more comfort than a husband/wife. A 2002 study by Karen Allen of the State University of New York measured stress levels and blood pressure in people (half of them were pet owners) while they performed 5 minutes of mental arithmetic (算術(shù)) or held a hand in ice water. People completed the tasks alone, with a husband/wife, a close friend or with a pet. People with pets did it best. Those tested with their animal friends had smaller change in blood pressure and returned most quickly to baseline heart rates. With pets in the room, people also made fewer math mistakes than when doing in front of other companions. It seems that people feel more relaxed around pets, says Allen, who thinks it may be because pets don't judge.
A study reported last fall suggests that having a pet dog may also have an effect on your body weight. Researchers at Northwestern Memorial Hospital spent a year studying two groups of fat people who were put on a diet-and-exercise program: one group with pet dogs, and the other without. On average, dog owners lost about 11 pounds,or 5% of their body weight; While those without dogs lost about 8 pounds. The pet owners, said researchers, got more exercise overall (mostly with their dogs) and found it worth doing.
(1)What does the text mainly discuss?
A.People's opinions of keeping pets.
B.How pets help people calm down.
C.What pets bring to their owners.
D.Pets can help in medical research.
(2)We learn from the text that a person with heart disease has a better chance of getting well if_________.
A.he has a pet companion
B.he has less stress of work
C.he often dose mental arithmetic
D.he is taken care of by his family
(3)According to Allen, why did the people do better with pets around?
A.They are less nervous.
B.They are in higher spirits.
C.They become more patient.
D.They have lower blood pressure.
(4)The research mentioned in the last paragraph suggests that_________.
A.people with dogs did more exercise
B.dogs lost the same weight as people did
C.dogs liked exercise much more than people did
D.people without dogs found the program unhelpful

【題目】根據(jù)短文內(nèi)容,從短文后的選項(xiàng)中選出能填入空白處的最佳選項(xiàng)。選項(xiàng)中有兩項(xiàng)為多余選項(xiàng)。
“Nature does not hurry, yet everything is accomplished.”---Lao Tzu
If you are in a city where everyone rushes, realize that you don't have to be like everyone else. You can be different. You can walk instead of driving in rush hour traffic. You can be on your iPhone or Blackberry less, and disconnected sometimes. Your environment doesn't control your life---you do. I'm not going to tell you how to give you a step-by-step guide to moving slower.
⒈Do less.
Cut back on your projects, on your task list, on how much you try to do each day. Pick 2-3 important things--- or even just one important thing--- and work on those first. Save smaller, routine tasks for later in the day, but give yourself time to focus.
⒉Meeting are usually a “big waste of time”. And they eat into your day, forcing you to squeeze the things you really need to do into small windows, and making you rush.
⒊Start to put off or cancel the unnecessary.
When you do the important things with focus, without rush, there will be things that get pushed back, and that don't get done. And you need to ask yourself:What would happen if I stopped doing them?
⒋Practice mindfulness.
Don't care so much about future or the past. When you eat, fully appreciate your food. When you are with someone, be with them fully. When you are walking, appreciate your surroundings, no matter where you are.
Try these things out. Life is better when unrushed. Remember the quote: if nature can get everything done without rushing, so can you.
A. Have fewer meetings.
B. How necessary are these things?
C. Simply learn to live in the present.
D. Focus not on quantity but on quality
E. Give yourself more time to get ready and get there.
F. The world likely won't end if you don't pass one of the examinations.
G. But here are some things to consider and perhaps adopt, if they work for your life.

In the past few month, every morning and evening, many people gathered to dance in our community square, which is designed to improve living quality. Although dancing helps to keep healthy, but the long-time dancing and loud noise causing by the loudspeaker really brought inconvenience. I couldn’t rest or sleep well, which made me terrible upset. I felt such sleepy in class that I performed badly in study. To solve a problem, I communicated with the organizers and suggested that they shortened the dance time and reduce the music noise. Only by this way can they have fun and let others enjoy life. To their delight, they adopted my suggestion.
