An Indian warship destroyed a suspected pirate vessel off the Horn of Africa last November. Finally, here is language that pirates can understand:   36.   a ship.

Several countries have    37.    forces to patrol Somali waters in    38.   to the growing number of pirate attacks on   39.  . But the pirates have only become more brazen (肆無忌憚),   40.   larger ships. Pirates even hijacked (劫持) a Saudi    41.   that was carrying over $100 million in oil.

Nearly 100 ships were hijacked    42.   the Horn of Africa in 2008. Ransoms (贖金) paid to    43.    the ships reached nearly $50 million. This has   44.    much hand-wringing (much disappointment) in government circles, and some  45.     decisions by shipping companies. Some have decided to reroute their ships all the way    46.   the Cape of Good Hope. That could  47.     over $250,000 to each trip, but it’s better for their ship and crew to be kept by pirates for some weeks.

International patrols are having little    48.  . Pirates responded by moving their armed attacks    49.  offshore. In effect, they've created a much larger field of play. The Sirius Star was    50.   450 nautical miles  off the Kenyan coast, in the Indian Ocean--a     51.   of water so vast that    52.   forces can't possibly patrol(巡航) it.

It seems that shipping firms have a decision to make: 53.    the region altogether or arm their ships to defend off direct attacks. There are some creative ways to do that. A chemical tanker fought off pirates    54.   with automatic weapons by releasing foam from fire hoses into the waters around the ship. In 2005, a cruise ship used a Long Range Acoustic Device, capable of causing permanent ear damage and temporary vision loss, to defend off a pirate attack on Somalia's coast.

When shall   55.   return to this body of water? People are still seeking the answer.

Death Valley is one of the most famous deserts in the United States, covering a wide area with its alkali sand Almost 20 percent of this area is well below sea level, and Badwater, a salt water pool, is about 280 feet below sea level and the lowest point in the United States.
Long ago the Panamint Indians called this place “Tomesha”— the land of fire. Death Valley’s present name dates back to 1849, when a group of miners coming across from Nevada became lost in its unpleasantness and hugeness and their adventure turned out to be a sad story. Today Death Valley has been declared(宣告)a National Monument(紀念碑)and is crossed by several well-marked roads where good services can be found easily. Luckily the change created by human settlement has hardly ruined the special beauty of this place.
Here nature created a lot of surprise, almost like the sights on the moon, ever-changing as the frequent(頻繁的)wind moves the sand about, showing the most unusual colors. One of the most surprising and variable(多變的)parts of Death Valley is the Devil’ s Golf Course, where it seems hard for one to tell reality from terrible dreams. Sand sculptures(沙雕)stand on a frightening ground, as evening shadows move and lengthen.

“Dinning out” and “eating out” are phrases people use in Britain when they eat in a restaurant or pub(小酒館). Eating out is more popular in Britain today than it has ever been. In 2006, for the first time ever, British people spent more eating out than cooking for themselves and eating at home. It seems that many British people are becoming increasingly interested in how good their food tastes, and also how healthy it is.
However, eating out can also be expensive. As British people do not eat out every night of the week, eating in a restaurant is often seen as a special occasion. When going on a first date and wanting to impress him/ her , or if celebrating an anniversary or a birthday, many people like to go to a restaurant to eat, and people often also eat in a restaurant before going to the cinema or the theater.
As in all cultures, there are many rules of etiquette(禮儀) surrounding food and eating. The knife and fork should be used in the correct way! It is also impolite to have your elbows(肘部) on the dinning table when you are eating.
Almost all British cities have a vast range of food as well as traditional British food, and all from the very cheap to the very expensive---French, Italian, Indian, Chinese, Greek, Thai, Japan and many, many more. In fact, when asked which was their favorite food, more British people said an Indian curry(咖喱菜肴) than any other dish !
As well as dining in a restaurant, when people are too tired to cook after work they often get a “take-away”. This means that they order from a take-out restaurant by telephone, and then go to collect it and take it home to eat. Many take-out restaurants also deliver it your house. While you can normally find a take-out restaurant for almost any food, the most popular are Italian, Indian and Chinese and then all of you have to do is to open the door, pay and eat !

Crowd controls could soon become an important skill for climbers on Mount Everest, as important as physical strength or watching the weather. In a single day last week, nearly 40 people reached the top of the world --- a record. Reports from base camp spoke of queues at dangerous ridges and crowds as people passed each other in the final dash for the 8, 848 meters top.
More traditional mountaineers tease about the circus atmosphere surrounding Everest in recent years, and there are warnings that the crowds are making the mountain more dangerous. In 1996, 14 died on the mountain when the members of several groups were trapped at high altitudes by sudden snowstorms. Bad weather in early May led to this year’s jam on the summit ridge, but the loss, luckily, was light. Just four climbers died, including a Nepali Sherpa who had made 11 previous successful climbing.
Traditionalists are also worried about the growing tendency of climbers to set records and achieve “firsts”, rather than simply climb the mountain. This year’s crop of mountaineers included the oldest man, 64-year-old Sherman Bull from Connecticut, and the youngest, 16-year-old Temba Tsheri Sherpa of Nepal. An American with only one arm was on the mountain this year; an Indian with no legs also tried but failed. Erik Weihennieyer, an American, became the first blind person to reach the top of the world. His fellow climbers stayed in front of him on the way up, describing the type of land and ringing bells.
Nepal(尼泊爾)views Mount Everest as something of a cash cow. The government charges journeys a minimum of $ 70,000. That is probably why officials in Katmandu are ignoring concerns about overcrowding and talking about even more climbers coming next year. But a celebration of the 48th anniversary of the first conquest of Everest, by Sir Edmund Hillary and Sherpa Tenzing Norgay, was cancelled after violent strikes. Tumultuous(動亂的)Nepali politics, it seems, could be just the crowd-control measure that Everest needs.
【小題1】What is the problem that the climbers have to face in recent years?

【小題2】What is the main idea of the second paragraph?
A.The risks of mountain climbing.
B.The consequence of overcrowding.

A.their great courageB.their common motivation
C.their different identityD.their outstanding achievements
【小題4】What is the attitude of the Nepali government towards overcrowding?
