【題目】More than seven hundred years ago, the Prince of Wales had a very big and brave dog called Gelert. One day the Prince wanted to go hunting with his men. He told his dog to stay at home and look after his baby son. The baby was in a wooden cradle(搖籃), which was like a small bed. When the Prince came back from hunting, Gelert ran out to meet his master. He wagged(搖擺) his tail and jumped up to put his paws on the Prince’s chest. Then the Prince saw the blood on Gelert’s jaws and head. “What have you done?” the Prince said. He rushed into his house and looked for his baby son. The cradle was lying on its side on the floor. The clothes were torn and there was blood on them. “So you have killed my son?” the Prince said angrily. “You unfaithful dog!” He took out his sword and killed the dog. Just as Gelert was dying, he managed to bark. Then the Prince heard a baby call to the dog.

The Prince ran out of the house and saw his son lying on the ground unhurt. Near him was a dead wolf. Then the Prince knew that Gelert had defended the baby and killed the wolf. The Prince ran back into the house but he was too late. Gelert was dead. The Prince was very sad indeed. Tears ran down his face when he realized he had killed his faithful friend. The Prince carried the body of his brave dog to the top of a mountain and buried him there. After this, the Prince never smiled again. Every morning at dawn, he walked up the mountain and stood by the dog’s grave for a few minutes.

If you go to Mount Snow in Wales, people will show you where Gelert is buried. There is a sign by his grave. It reminds people of a brave and faithful dog.

1細(xì)節(jié)理解題,根據(jù)文章第一段“He told his dog to stay at home and look after his baby son.”可得知王子外出狩獵之時吩咐gelert照看自己的兒子。”Take care of “意為照顧,照看和“l(fā)ook after”相近,故選B項。

2細(xì)節(jié)理解題,根據(jù)文章第一段“When the Prince came back from hunting, Gelert ran out to meet his master. He wagged his tail and jumped up to put his paws on the Prince’s chest.”

There are various reasons why cancers appear to be on the increase. For one thing, though their sufferers are to be found in all age groups, cancers are particularly likely to attack persons in their middle and advanced years. Naturally, since people live longer these years, there are more cancer sufferers than before. Again, with better methods of diagnosis (診斷), doctors can more easily recognize cancerous growths that would formerly have passed unnoticed or that would have been wrongly diagnosed. It is also believed that certain habits and conditions of modern living, including heavy smoking and the pollution of the air, may leave people living in more cancer-causing conditions than before.

We all look forward to the day when a simple medical test can find cancer while it is still small. Researchers around the world are working on such a test. Most of their work deals with the examination of the blood.

Researchers in Boston have found something in the blood of cancer patients that does not appear in healthy persons. The test showed which persons had cancer and which did not. It was correct more than 90 percent of the time.

The researchers believe the test may be able to show cancer very clearly in its development. Cancers discovered early usually can be treated successfully.

The test examines very small bits of fat in the blood called lipids (脂質(zhì)). Cancers seem to change lipids although doctors do not know why. The test showed differences between the lipids of the persons with cancer and the lipids of those without cancer.

The researchers say the new test could be a step to develop a simple way to check patients for cancer before the disease shows on an X-ray.

【1】Who will fail cancer from the study of the researchers?

A. The young. B. The middle age and the older.

C. The man. D. The woman.

【2】The underlined words "such a test" refer to ________.

A. the test that shows which persons have cancer and which don’t

B. the test that may be able to show cancer very early in its development

C. a simple medical test that cannot find cancer when it is small

D. a new test that could be a step to develop a difficult way

【3】Which of the following statements is true according to the passage?

A. Cancers have much to do with something in patients’ blood.

B. People living in better conditions are most likely to be attacked by cancer.

C. X-raying is the best way to determine whether a person has cancer or not.

D. Cancers have nothing to do with a person’s habits and living conditions.

【4】What would be the best title for the passage?

A. A simple way to cancer B. Cancers can be cured

C. How to find cancer D. Early discovery of cancer

【題目】閱讀下列短文,從每題所給的四個選項(A、B、C和D)中,選出最佳選項。

Every Wednesday, I go to Cantata Adult Life Services,a local retirement community in Brookfield, Illinois, US, with my classmates to do community service.

After my very first visit to Cantata,my life changed forever. That may sound a bit dramatic, but volunteering with the elderly has changed my views on life.

Our visits last about an hour, and we bring 2530 students every time. We play board games and cards with the residents while we're there.

You can watch all the movies and TV shows you want about “l(fā)ife back then”, but nothing compares to talking to the people who were actually there. Just hearing their stories has touched me in a way I never thought possible.

Whether it was talking to 98yearold “Hurricane Hilda” about her glory days as a roller skater or chatting with Lou about the times she danced with a famous actor, I was completely attracted by every single memory the residents wanted to share with me.

Even the residents who don't have amazing memories make the experience satisfying.I remember visiting Mrs. Robinson. She couldn't recall much about her past, but she told me she'd never forget how kind I was just to listen to her “rambling(漫談)”. It made me realize that it's the little things that make life worth living. That's something I won't forget anytime soon.

If there's one thing I've realized in my three years of visiting Cantata, it's that presence—just being there—means more than anything to many of the residents. And despite how busy our lives are, there's lways time to make someone's day.

For me, it feels great to be a source of happiness, a smile on a bad day or a listening ear for old memories. And at the end of the day, that's all that matters.

It's easy to feel like you don't have anything in common with the elderly—especially when you're a teenager. But that's not true at all.

I hate to be overly clichéd(陳詞濫調(diào)的) here, but age really is just a number. As young adults, it's important for us to realize this sooner rather than later. We can learn a lot from the elderly, and they can often benefit from teenagers too.

【1】What do the volunteers do according to the passage?

A.They share everything with the residents.

B.They play board games and cards with the residents.

C.They watch the residents play games.

D.They buy gifts for the residents.

【2】According to the writer, what is the most important thing that volunteers can do for the elderly?

A.Playing with them.

B.Benefiting from them.

C.Helping them.

D.Being there with them.

【3】What does the writer want to tell us by writing this passage?

A.We don't have anything in common with the elderly.

B.Age is just a number.

C.It is important to help the elderly.

D.Young adults and the elderly can benefit from each other.
