When Iain Douglas-Hamilton first started studying elephants in Africa,he had to invent ways of tracking the big animals. Over the course of 40 years in the field, the zoologist learned how to fly airplanes and use some high-tech means to follow their movements. He also learned how to get out of the way fast. "I learned how to climb trees very quickly," says Dr. Douglas-Hamilton, winner of the 2010 Indianapolis Prize.

As co-founder of Save the Elephants, he has also learned to be an activist, author, and politician. When Douglas-Hamilton left Tanzania, in East Africa, in 1970 to study at Oxford University in Britain, he left behind "an elephants' paradise (樂園)."But when he returned in 1972, the country's national parks looked more like a war zone. Douglas-Hamilton often found more dead elephants than living ones.

Dr. Douglas-Hamilton now lives in Kenya with his wife, Oria, who co-founded Save the Elephants. Together they have written two books, "Battle for the Elephants" and " Among the Elephants".

During the height of the ivory poaching (偷獵),Douglas-Hamilton flew in small planes, helping bring back elephants in Uganda from the edge of extinction. He's been repeatedly shot at and has survived plane crashes, floods and diseases. He fought for years for a worldwide ban on ivory sales, which finally took effect in 1989.

Douglas-Hamilton pioneered the scientific study of elephant social behavior. Among his discoveries: Elephants have a society controlled by female elephants and travel in families. In 2009, he worked to save a rare group of desert elephants in Mali from the worst dry weather in Mali's history. There have been other successes, particularly in East and Southern Africa. Douglas—Hamilton has proposed (提議) the idea of a mobile national park, where the protected land would follow elephants as they travel. No country has yet accepted it.

Even after decades of research, Douglas-Hamilton still enjoys the company of elephants. "I love to sit with them and be with them, "he says. "I have the greatest joy just to be with elephants at peace."

The Owl Count

Annie slept in the front of the seat with her father drove through the darkness. ”We’re almost there!” Dad announced cheerfully. “Soon well be observing and counting owls at the state park.” Yawning, Annie nodded and smiled. The time was 4:30 a.m. Looking out into the darkness, Annie remembered learning in school that most owls are active at night, when they hunt for food. During the day they sleep in hard-to-find spots.

“Dad, why do you need to count owls?” she asked. “It’s important for the scientists to have current information about bird populations,” he explained. “We want to know which birds have decreased in number and whether any new kinds of birds are coming into a certain area. You and I will write down the kinds of birds that we see today and keep a record of how many times we see each kind. The we’ll send out a report to a scientific organization that is collecting about birds from people all over the county.”

Dad pulled into the parking lot of the state park. Then, with flashing in hand, they began their hike into the woods. Annie zipped up her coat and tried to keep from trembling. She had not expected the morning to be so frigid. Luckily her gloves were in her pocket.

Suddenly Annie’s father stooped and gestured for her to be still. Obeying,Annie did not take another step. She thought she heard a low crying up head. “That’s certainly a screech owl,” her father whispered. “Let’s get a look at it.” After looking more closely,Annie could see that it was a small owl. Sensing danger, the owl narrowed its eyes and pulled its feathers tightly against its body. Annie carefully wrote down in her notebook that they had seen a screech owl.

Walking a little farther, they came to a tall oak tree. “This looks like a perfect spot to attract owls,” Dad said. “I’m going to play a recording of common call of the barred owl. Maybe we can get one to answer.’ Annie could hardly believe her ear. The recorded all sounded as if the bird were asking,“who cooks for you?” Moments later Annie thought she heard a return call in distance. She held her breath and waited. Suddenly a huge bird landed very quietly on a branch above them.

Annie had long forgotten how cold it was. She stood in wonder, shining her flashlight on the bird and studying it carefully. The barred owl was nearly tow feet tall. Gray feathers surrounded its dark eyes. The bird did not matter. Annie would never forge the image of the powerful barred owl.

Beat Summer Learning Loss

Summer learning loss is a loss of knowledge and skills most commonly due to long breaks during the summertime. Many teachers have certainly had the experience of taking the first month of school not only to introduce his or her rules and procedures to the class but also to get the kids back “up to speed” with thinking, remembering what they’ve learned and in many cases, reviewing previous content. 1.

(1)Read!

Research supports the relationship between independent reading and student achievement, so simply having children read daily will make a positive difference. 2. public libraries, local bookstores, online stores, etc.

(2)Write!

Have children write letters to out-of-town friends and family, or write postcards while on vacation. 3. For children who are good at drawing or painting, parents may choose to create a family scrapbook(剪貼簿) with words printed below pictures. Not only will parents keep this summer’s memories, but children will also continue to practice his or her writing skills!

(3)Do the Math!

4. have a yard sale, and put children in charge of the cash box; help younger ones organize an orange juice stand (to practice salesmanship and making change). Or simply buy a set of inexpensive flash cards to practice basic facts while waiting in line or on a long car ride. There are even a host of free online games that will keep children’s math skills sharp.

(4) “Homeschool” Children.

Keeping children’s skills fresh doesn’t have to cost a fortune: check out some workbooks and online resources, and children can work through several exercises each day. Even as little as twenty minutes a day can have amazing results. 5. For instance, children can learn something during a car ride, right before bedtime, etc.

Of course, parents don’t need to do all the steps here. Just following through with one or two of these ways will be of great help.

A. Think of ways children can use math skills in daily activities:

B. A summer journal is another way to set down summer activities.

C. What’s more, it’s easy to work in a small block of time here and there.

D. Check out the following sources to find books that your child will want to dive into.

E. So it’s not a good choice for parents to force children to spend their summertime learning knowledge.

F. Fortunately, there are some steps parents can try to help children both enjoy the summer and keep their skills fresh.
