His eyes nearly in tears from the crush of fellow travelers at Guangzhou's train station, Hong Tao said things were much better on Sunday, after days of waiting for a train to his home in Hubei province.

"I think it's fine today, and everything is going smoothly," the 28-year-old said. "I thought it would be really crowded but it has turned out to be OK."

Chinese authorities say they expect 1.3 million people to travel out of Guangzhou's train station over the next few days, as they rush to get home by Wednesday, the eve of Lunar New Year.

Hong's optimism may have been helped by the blue skies that emerged over Guangzhou on Sunday for the first time in a week.

Last week, a rare winter storm paralyzed China's transportation system as millions tried to get home to celebrate the holiday — the only chance for many migrant workers to see their families all year.

China's state-run Xinhua news agency said Friday that 95 percent of rail traffic had "returned to normal." But Guangzhou's train station remained packed with a backlog of hundreds of thousands of travelers hoping to get home for the holiday.

A young woman was stepped on in a stampede (人群蜂擁) at the train station Friday, and later died of her injuries, according to Xinhua. Video of the situation on Friday showed crowds of people screaming, elbowing each other, in some cases sobbing and collapsing in the rush to get a slot (狹縫,窄孔) on a train.

China Sunday announced it has organized over 300,000 People's Liberation Army forces to southern China in what it described as a "war on winter weather".

The government also announced a $700 million plan to help farmers whose crops have been destroyed.

6. How many days is it from the day this article was made to the Lunar New Year?

A. Two days.         B. Three days.               C. Four days.         D. Five days.

7. What can we know about the weather condition of last week in Guangzhou?

A. Sunny with blue sky.               B. Rainy for a whole week.

C. Heavily snowy.                       D. Rainy first and snowy now.

8. Why are there so many passengers in Guangzhou’s train station?

A. Because the heavy snow stopped the passengers from leaving the station.

B. Because the passengers didn’t hope to leave the station right now.

C. Because the passengers hoped to leave for their hometown.

D. Because the holiday was coming near.

9. Where is Hong Tao from?

A. Shandong province.                B. Hubei province.

C. Guandong province.                      D. Not mentioned.

10. What can we infer from the passage?

A. On Friday, a young man was dead because of crowds’ elbowing, screaming.

B. China’s Government have arranged the PLA forces to help.

C. The government of China have offered money to help farmers enjoy the new year.

D. Many crops have been destroyed by the crowds of people.

A
If I were writing a history of my family, some of the darkest moments recorded would be those surrounding Christmas trees. One would certainly think otherwise; selecting and putting up our trees have always been filled with risk. For example, one afternoon dangerously close to Christmas Eve my mother bought what she thought to be a bargain, a glorious tree that was so full and tall that we could hardly get it onto the house.Once we did, my father immediately realized that we would have to hire a carpenter to build a stand for it.Another December, perhaps the very next one, we bought a tree earlier than we ever had before. We were happy with its shape and delighted that its size was manageable. We easily placed it in a stand, decorated(裝飾)it from top to bottom, and then self-satisfiedly sat back by the fire in its soft light. Two or three days passed and the truth could not be hidden; we had bought a tree cut so long ago that its needles were coming off. There was nothing to do undecorated it, take it down, and begin treeshopping again. Our most recent Christmas tree offered still another difficult task. When we brought it home, once again it seemed larger than it had in the great outdoors. To complicate matters, we had bought a new stand, one whose nuts and bolts worked more mysteriously than those of our old stand.I persuaded two young neighbors to stop playing basketball and to help us get the tree into the house and set it correctly in the stand.Unfortunately, no one noticed the mud on our helpers’ shoes, so only after removing several reddish brown spots from the carpet were we able to discuss the question of where the lights and ornaments(裝飾)were stored.Perhaps those who cut their own trees have tales more painful than these.I don’t care to hear them, as my family’s experiences are enough to cause me to make the following suggestion:“Let’s forget the tree next Christmas.Let’s simply hang some flowers on the front door and over the mirror in the hall.”
41.The darkest moments in the writer’s family were with the fact that________.
A.the family bought big Christmas trees
B.they had problems decorating their Christmas trees

42.We can learn from the passage that the writer would like to________.
A.forget about Christmas
B.get the neighbors to put up their trees
C.buy a better tree
D.make some other decorations to celebrate Christmas rather than the tree
43.When the writer said“mother bought what she thought to be a bargain”, he means________.
A.she bought the tree at a cheap price
B.she didn’t really want to buy it
C.she had to bargain hard with the salesman
D.she couldn’t afford a more expensive one
44.Which of the following can be the best for the passage?
A.How to Select a Christmas Tree     B.No More Christmas Tree for US
C.Dark Moments of Life            D.Christmas without Trees

Audrey Hepburn (奧黛麗·赫本) was born on May 4, 1929 in Brussels, Belgium. She really was blue-blood from the beginning with her father, a wealthy English banker, and her mother, a Dutch noblewoman. After her parents divorced, Audrey went to London with her mother where she went to a private girl school. Later, when her mother moved back to the Holland, she attended private schools as well. While taking a vacation with her mother in Arnhem, Holland, Hitler's army took over the town. It was here that she fell on hard times during the Nazi occupation. Audrey suffered from depression and poor nutrition.
After the liberation, Audrey went to a ballet school in London on a scholarship and later began a modeling career. As a model, she was graceful and, it seemed, she had found her job suitable for her in life - until the film producers came calling. Audrey gained immediate prominence in the US with her role in Roman Holiday in 1953. This film turned out to be a splendid success as she won an Oscar as Best Actress. This gained her enormous popularity and more plum roles. One of the reasons for her popularity was the fact that she was so elf-like and had class, unlike the sex-goddesses of the time. Roman Holiday was followed by another similarly wonderful performance in the 1957 classic Funny Face.In 1988, Audrey became a special ambassador to the United Nations fund helping children in Latin America and Africa, a position she retained until 1993.Her elegance and style will always be remembered in film history as evidenced by her being named in Empire magazine's "The Top 100 Movie Stars of All Time."

B. in the Americana there were many important film roles waiting for her to act

When my first wartime Christmas came, I was in basic training in New Jersey and not sure if I would make it home for the holidays. Only on the afternoon of December 23 was the list of men who would have the three-day holiday posted. I was one of the lucky soldiers. It was Christmas Eve when I arrived home, and a little snow had fallen. Mother opened the front door. I could see beyond her, into the corner of the living room where the tree had always stood. There were lights, all colors, and ornaments (飾品) shining against the green of a pine.
"Where did it come from?" I asked.
"I asked the Gates boy to cut it," my mother said. "I wouldn't have had one just for myself, but when in great need... such a rush! He just brought it in this afternoon."
The pine reached to the proper height, almost to the ceiling, and the Tree Top Crystal(水晶) Star was in its place. A few green branches reached out a little awkwardly(難看) at the side, I thought, and there was a bit of bare trunk showing in the middle. But the tree filled the room with warm light and the whole house with the pleasant smell of Christmas.
"It's not like the one you used to find," my mother went on. "Yours were always in good shape. I suppose the Gates boy didn't know where to look for a better one. But I couldn't be fussy(挑剔的)."
"Don't worry," I told her. "It's perfect."
It wasn't, of course, but at the moment I realized something for the first time: All Christmas trees are perfect.
