PERTH—Search crews will send a submarine(潛航器)deep into the Indian Ocean on Monday for the first time to try to determine whether signals detected by sound-locating equipment are from the  missing Malaysian plane's black boxes, the Australian head of the search said.
Angus Houst on said the crew on board the Ocean Shield  will send the underwater vehicle sometime Monday evening. The Bluefin 21 submarine can create a sonar(聲吶)map of the area to chartany wreckage(殘骸)on the seafloor.
The move comes after crews picked up a series of underwater sounds over the past two weeks that were consistent with an aircraft's black boxes.
“We haven’t had a single detection in six days, and l guess it’s time to go under water,” said Houston.
“Analysis of the four signals has reduced the search area on the ocean floor. The experts have therefore determined that the Australian Defense Vessel Ocean Shield will stop searching with the Towed Pinger Locator(拖曳聲波定位儀)later today and use the underwater vehicle Bluefin 21 as soon as possible," he said at a news conference in Perth.
But Houston warned the switch to the submarine will not automatically "result in the detection of the aircraft wreckage. It may not.”
He said the submarine will take 24 hours to do each task, including two hours to dive, 16 hours to search the bottom, then two more hours hack up and four hours to download data.
Recovering the plane's flight data and cockpit(飛行員座艙)voice recorders is necessary For investigators to try to figure out what happened to Flight 370, which disappeared on March 8.
Houston said the search using the submarine will be a slaw and painstaking process.
The submarine takes six times longer to cover the same area as the pinger locator, and will need about six weeks to two months to examine the present underwater zone. The signals are also coming from 4,500 meters (15,000 feet) below the surface, which is the deepest the submarine can dive.
小題1:The submarine will be sent deep into the Indian Ocean on Monday to _____ .
A.create a sonar trap of the area
B.pick up underwater sounds
C.see if the signals detected are from the target black boxes
D.reduce the search area on the ocean floor
小題2:According to the passage, the submarine_______ .
A.will download data of the black boxes
B.can find the aircraft wreckage within 24 hours
C.will recover the plane's flight data and voice recorder
D.can dive to a depth of no more than 4,500 meters
小題3:The underlined sentences in the passage indicate that______.
A.the switch of the submarine may not function properly
B.the Ocean Shield will switch to submarine when it is necessary
C.the submarine will detect the wreckage of the plane automatically
D.the detection of the wreckage can't be guaranteed by using the submarine
小題4:The search will be a slow and painstaking process, mainly because _____ .
A.the underwater sounds were consistent with an aircraft's black boxes
B.the submarine travels slowly and the ocean is deep
C.they haven't had a single detection in six days
D.Ocean Shield stops searching wine the towed pinger locator

PERTH—Search crews will send a submarine(潛航器)deep into the Indian Ocean on Monday for the first time to try to determine whether signals detected by sound-locating equipment are from the  missing Malaysian plane's black boxes可知,其目的是檢測信號是否來自黑匣子。
小題2:D。細(xì)節(jié)題。根據(jù)文章最后一段The signals are also coming from 4,500 meters (15,000 feet) below the surface, which is the deepest the submarine can dive.可知,信號來自海底4500米深的地方,那也是潛航器能到達(dá)的最深的地方。故選D。
小題3:D。根據(jù)上下文猜測段落大意題。Result in:導(dǎo)致,以....
The submarine takes six times longer to cover the same area as the ginger locator, and will need about six weeks to two months to examine the present underwater zone.

As has been all too apparent in recent days at Balcombe, few issues cause greater concern than energy policy. Many village communities feel their countryside is being ruined by the power-producing machines of wind farms; yet they never take "direct action", even though the planning laws put them at a severe disadvantage. And the generous subsidies (財(cái)政補(bǔ)貼) , which encourage the expansion of wind power, are not favorable to the village communities and set landowners in conflict with other residents (居民) .
Those who disagree with the rapid expansion of wind farms state that the damage they cause is out of proportion(比例) to the benefits they bring, because their energy output cannot match that of the carbon-based power stations they are supposed to replace. Supporters insist that wind must be part of a mix of renewables, nuclear and carbon, and that the country is committed to meeting EU ( European Union) targets for non-carbon energy generation.
Against this background, the fact that there is an argument within the Government over whether to publish an official report on wind farms' impact on the countryside becomes even more extraordinary. The two parties in the coalition (聯(lián)合) government are in disagreement over what it should say.
We have some advice for the two parties: publish the report, and let the country be the judge.  Even if it contains evidence that wind farms are harmful, it will hardly be a pleasant surprise to people who do not like them. Equally, supporters must argue their case by acknowledging the concerns and explaining why they are either misplaced or worthy of much attention.
The suggestion that further negotiations are to take place to produce an "acceptable" report suggests that the politics of coalition government are doing the country harm in a certain way. Given the sensitivities involved, all the information should be available so that people can reach their own conclusions, rather than being left with the suspicion(猜疑)that facts are being replaced by political beliefs.
小題1:We can learn from the first paragraph that__________.
A.energy policy catches much attention of the public
B.the residents are in favor of the expansion of wind farms
C.many village communities are satisfied with the subsidies
D.the planning laws offer great benefits to the residents
小題2:Supporters think that the expansion of wind power____.
A.is more rapid than that of carbon-based power
B.guarantees an increase in energy output
C.is expected to be much better than that of nuclear power
D.a(chǎn)grees with EU targets for non-carbon energy generation
小題3:It can be inferred from the passage that____.
A.a(chǎn)n official report will settle the energy problem
B.the two parties are divided over the issue of wind farms
C.the two parties have agreed on a further negotiation
D.political beliefs concerning energy issue go against facts
小題4:Which of the following reflects the author's opinion?
A.Increase political impact on energy policy.
B.Release a statement of supporters on wind farms.
C.Let the nation judge the facts about wind power.
D.Leave the two parties to reach their own conclusions.

MONTAGNE: In the summer of 2011, the world first heard of a small island in Norway under the most terrible of circumstances. Utoya Island was a youth camp run by Norway's Labor Party. One day in July, a heavily armed, right-wing extremist stepped onto the island and began shooting at random. Sixty-nine people died, over 100 were wounded; almost all, young people. This month, artist Jonas Dahlberg was appointed to create a memorial. He described to us the experience he imagines for those who come to the island.
DAHLBERG: You start your walk through a forest of evergreens on a wooden pathway. After a while, this pathway starts to go down into the landscape.
MONTAGNE: Down into the landscape, and into a short tunnel. When you come out, you are unable to go any farther. You can't get to the tip of the island because it has been cut off. So all you can do is look across a narrow channel of water at what is now a wall of polished stone, carved with the names of the dead.
DAHLBERG: It becomes almost like a gravestone. You cannot reach it. It's close enough to be able to read, but it's forever lost for your possibility to reach.
MONTAGNE: It's being called a memory wound. Exactly what do you mean by that?
DAHLBERG: During my first site visit, the experience of seeing those gunshots—and you can see it was like being in an open wound. And it took me to a stage of deep sadness where it was hard to breathe. So I didn't want to illustrate loss; I wanted to make actual loss. It's just a cut through the island.
MONTAGNE: On the day of the massacre, just hours before launching his shooting on the island, the killer set off a bomb in downtown Oslo, leaving eight people dead. As those events were unfolding, artist Jonas Dahlberg had been out with his brother, and stopped in at a seaside village.
DAHLBERG: In the harbor, it was silent, and this is the higher end of summer. So, it's normally a very lively place. And it was total silence there; and it was a very, very strange feeling in the whole small village. And it's totally impossible to grasp what is going on. And then it just kept on. It's still almost impossible to understand it. It's also one of the reasons why it's so important with memorials for these kind of things. It's to maybe help a little bit to understand what was happening. So it's not just about remembering. It's also about trying to just understand.
MONTAGNE: Artist Jonas Dahlberg designed the memorial for the 69 who died at a youth camp on Utoya Island. The attack was the deadliest in Norway since World War II. That memorial will open in 2015. And to see a virtual version of what it will look like, go to our website, at npr.org. This is Renee Montagne at NPR news.
小題1:Which of the following statements is TRUE?
A.Utoya Island was the only bloody shooting spot planned by the killer.
B.Utoya Island used to be a youth camp site and now has been reduced to total silence.
C.Dahlberg and his brother witnessed the shooting on Utoya Island.
D.Visitors to Utoya Island can touch the names of the victims carved on the polished stone.
小題2:By the underlined phrase “a memory wound”, Dahlberg means all the following EXCEPT that ________.
A.the artist plans to slice through the end of an island to make actual loss
B.memorials are supposed to be not only about remembering but helping people to understand what was happening
C.this memorial shows the gunshots vividly to the visitors for them to understand what was happening
D.the space between is meant to symbolize how those who were killed are gone but are not forgotten
小題3: Which of the following pictures shows the design of the memorial?
A.B.
C.D.

Mark Thompson, the BBC’s director general, is expected to announce on Thursday that the BBC will quit its entire west London home -- possibly selling the land to Chelsea football club -- as part of main plans that will see more staff moved out of the capital to Salford and elsewhere.
The move is at the heart of the BBC’s long-awaiting cost-cutting strategy(策略)which will see nearly 2,000 more jobs going at the public broadcaster, and some original programming, such as daytime shows on BBC2, eliminated to save money.
Several thousand people are employed at the west London sites, including Thompson himself and the bosses of all the BBC’s television channels. The employees are expected to be relocated(重新安排)to Broadcasting House in central London, Salford, or elsewhere.
The BBC has been broadcasting at various locations in the Shepherd’s Bush area since moving into Lime Grove in 1949.It then switched to the Television Centre in 1960,and more modern offices at nearby White City. But it is now open to selling the site, and the broadcaster has had talks about attracting Premier League clubs Chelsea or Queen’s Park Rangers as buyers. Both clubs are looking for new homes.
Earlier leaks(透露)suggest that the BBC will seek to cut spending on sports where the corporation has already decided to share coverage of Formula 1 with Sky TV -- and imports, such as Mad Men and The Killing.BBC4 is expected to focus on “arts and archive(檔案)”, but Thompson has long ruled out closing any channels or radio stations.BBC1 and Radio 4 will be protected, but there are expected to be some cuts to local radio programs, which will see stations share shows outside breakfast and drive-time hours.
The corporation is already committed to remove TV Centre by 2015, but because parts of the building are listed, the football clubs have expressed an interest in the BBC’s White City offices instead, which could be knocked down. The White City building is where Thompson and the broadcaster's commercial division, BBC Worldwide, are based.
BBC sources say the 2,500 job losses being proposed(提議)include the 650 cuts to the World Service already announced, with up to l,000 coming from BBC News.It is understood that some staff who have only just made the move to Salford could see their jobs at risk. Salford is now home to Radio5 Live, children’s programs such as Blue Peter, and sports output including Match of the Day.
小題1:Why is the BBC planning to quit its west London home?
A.The BBC wants to earn more money.
B.The BBC would like to support British football sport.
C.The BBC is planning to save money for new programs.
D.The BBC has to cut down its cost.
小題2:The underlined word “eliminated” in the second paragraph means“_________”.
A.set asideB.cut outC.sold outD.put on
小題3:What will happen if the BBC moves its home ?
A.Some original programmes will be adjusted.
B.All the BBC staff will have to work outside London.
C.More people will be employed for new programs.

小題4:From the passage,we can learn that ________.
A.the BBC will cover Formula 1 on its own as usual
B.the football clubs are likely to buy some of the BBC’s offices
C.the BBC’s commercial division will be open to selling the sites
D.the BBC’s offices are all in the White City of London

Thousands of puffins(海鸚) live in Maine and on islands in the Gulf of Maine. But the puffins may be in danger. Last summer, the percentage of laid eggs that successfully produced baby puffins took a dive. Scientists also found a decline in the average body weight of the adult and baby puffins on Machias Seal Island, home to the area’s largest colony. Over the winter, dozens of the seabirds from the region were found dead, likely from starvation.
What’s causing the puffin trouble? Scientists think it may be a shortage of food. With ocean temperatures rising, fish populations have moved around. Normally, puffins’ primary food source is herring, a type of fish. A lack of herring in the area could be causing the problem.
Butterfish from the south have become more abundant in the Gulf of Maine and could be a new food source for birds. But Steve Kress says butterfish may be too big and round for baby puffins to swallow.
Puffins spend most of their lives at sea. They come ashore to breed each spring and return to the ocean in August. The chicks swim to sea about 40 days after hatching. Puffin populations stretch across the North Atlantic, from Maine to northern Russia.
Maine’s puffin population has been at risk in the past. In the 1800s, they were hunted for their food, eggs and feathers. By 1901, only one pair of puffins remained in the state. Thanks to the help of local lighthouse keepers and seabird restoration programs, the state’s puffin population has been restored to more than 2,000 birds.
Scientists aren’t sure what will happen to the Gulf of Maine’s puffins. The birds may move further north. Kress says he hopes the Gulf population will sustain itself and then he continued. “You never know what climate change will bring,” Kress said. “Historically fish could move out and more southerly fish could move in, and puffins may adapt to the new fish. Only they will know how the story will unfold.”

As a group of young African immigrants struggle to adapt to life in the United States, an after-school drama program at White Oak Middle School aims to make their lives easier by first making them a little harder.
Project X is a program that uses drama, dance, poetry and other creative outlets to help students discuss the tough and sometimes painful problems they face as pre-teen immigrants with language barriers. A final unveiling of their creation will be performed for friends and family at the end of the year at Imagination Stage.
Wanjiru Kamau, coordinator of White Oak’s African Club said it’s important to give troubles to group members to help them find their place at the school. “It comforts those who are uncomfortable, and it discomforts those who are comfortable,” Kamau said of Project X.
Kamau teamed up with Imagination Stage after she noticed that many African students seemed uncomfortable talking about problems, such as being laughed at by their fellow students about how they look and talk. When most of the kids join the club, they speak little or no English, Kamau said. Each week, the club typically draws five to ten students who are originally from Africa for discussion sessions and the Project X programme.
“We are going to express ourselves through our words and our actions, and that’s powerful,” said teaching artist Meg Green as she introduced fill-in-the-blank poems the students wrote about their identities.
One student, Frank Ketchouang, 13, wrote, “I am from the world; I am love,” which drew oohs and aahs from the group. Ketchouang has been in the United States for less than a year, said Program Coordinator Chad Dike. When Ketchouang started attending Project X, he had been in the United States for two months and spoke no English. Now he’s one of the group’s most outgoing members and helps translate instructions from English to Creole for the group’s newest member, who is from Haiti.
Many people will give up when there’s a language barrier, “but these students prove them wrong”. Kamau said. “You do have something to give. You are important. When TV, media, etc. are bringing them down, this program is bringing them up.”
