【題目】Learners of English, especially self-taught learners may have trouble in understanding speeches by native speakers. The following ways might help improve their listening ability.
First of all, do things step by step. It is not good to listen to something beyond your level. Better choose a suitable course and start with the first book. Go on to the second book only after you are sure you understand the first one.
Secondly, stick to one course of study. Don’t change books often. Never let your attention be attracted by another course just because it seems to be more “fashionable”.
Thirdly, listen to the English news program over the radio from time to time. Better go through the news stories in the Chinese-language newspaper first. That will make it easy for you to understand the English news on the radio.Fourthly, if you have time, listen to some interesting stories in some special English programs, such as VOA. or other listening materials of the same level as that of your textbook.

【題目】閱讀下列短文,從每題所給的四個(gè)選項(xiàng)(A、B、C和D)中,選出最佳選項(xiàng)。
No one would much like the idea of eating 61 pounds of tomatoes a day. But if their goodness was put into an easytoswallow pill that you were told might prevent strokes(中風(fēng)) and heart attacks you would probably be putting in an order tomorrow.
Researchers believe they may have come up with just that after trials. The daily pill contains a chemical called lycopene which makes tomatoes red and is known to break down fat in the vessels(血管).A Cambridge University study found taking the pills improved blood flow and the lining of vessels in patients with preexisting heart conditions. It also increased the flexibility(靈活性) of their vessels by 50 percent. The scientists believe it could limit the damage caused by heart disease—responsible for 180,000 deaths a year—and help cut the 49,000 deaths a year from strokes. They also hope it could benefit those with arthritis(關(guān)節(jié)炎), diabetes(糖尿病) and even slow the progress of cancer.
Each pill is equal to eating around 61 pounds of ripe tomatoes. Studies have shown eating a Mediterraneanstyle diet rich in tomatoes, fish, vegetables, nuts and olive oil can significantly reduce cholesterol(膽固醇) and help prevent cardiovascular disease.
Preliminary results from a twomonth trial, in which the pill was given to 36 heart disease patients and 36 healthy volunteers with an average age of 67, were presented at a meeting of the American Heart Association. It was shown to improve the function of the endothelium—the layer of cells lining blood vessels. It also improved their sensitivity to nitric oxide, the/span> gas which causes the enlargement of the vessels in response to exercise.
Ian Wilkinson, head of Cambridge University's clinical trials unit, said,“These results are potentially very significant and it meets the goal, but we need more trials to see if they translate into fewer heart attacks and strokes.”
Further studies are planned, with researchers hoping it could offer a choice for heart disease sufferers who can not take the cholesterollowing drugs.
Mike Knapton, head of the British Heart Foundation, said, “Although this showed lycopene improved blood flow in people with heart disease, that's a long way from demonstrating that taking it could improve outcomes for people with heart disease. The best way to get the benefits of a good diet is to eat plenty of fresh fruit and vegetables.”
【1】What can we infer from Paragraph 1?
A.We can eat too much tomato food.
B.Tomatoes are helpful to strokes and heart attacks.
C.Tomatoes will lose healthy elements if they are put into pills.
D.We had better not eat tomatoes.
【2】We can learn from the passage that the pills ________.
A.a(chǎn)re at the experiment stage
B.can cure all the disease
C.a(chǎn)re widely used among patients
D.cost patients so little money
【3】Who were the volunteers by taking part in the trial?
A.Children. B.Youth.
C.Working people. D.Old healthy people.
【4】What was Ian Wilkinson's opinion on the trial?
A.Disappointing. B.Surprising.
C.Satisfactory. D.Terrible.

【題目】You may have heard of the book Moby Dick(《白鯨記》),written by the American author Herman Melville. You may also know that Moby Dick is considered one of the greatest novels ever written. However,it might surprise you to find out Herman Melville was not always a highly regarded author.
Melville’s first two novels,Typee and Omoo, were widely read and financially successfully. They were both exciting tales of adventures at sea and experiences with people in foreign lands.Melville became quite famous. However, upon the publication of his third book,Mardi,Melville’s popularity began to weaken. He was no longer interested in telling tales of pure adventure, and his writing took on a style that alienated(使疏遠(yuǎn))the general reading public of his time.
Melville published Moby Dick in October of 1851 it was an original novel, combining aspects of sociology and philosophy, which confused readers by its complex symbolism. The book sold poorly.
Melville’s next book,Pierre, was almost completely disregarded by the public.Debt frustration and ill health finally forced Melville to take a low-paying job as a customs inspector.Eventually,Melville abandoned prose(散文)and began to write poetry.
The Civil War is the main subject of Melville’s poetry. He and his brother made a trip to the front line, and he published a book of poems,Battle-Pieces and Aspects of War,based on this experience.
Melville died in 1891 at the age of 72 at this point, his work had been completely forgotten by the public. His talent was to go unrecognized for the next thirty years. Then,in 1920s, his reputation began to improve as critics and readers rediscovered his work.Today Moby Dick is one of the best-known novels ever penned by an American author.

【題目】If you can find a tree which has been cut down, you will see many rings,or circles,on the base of the trunk.By learning to read these rings, you can find out about the tree's life.
The number of rings tells you how old the tree is.Each year, new wood is formed on the outside of the tree. This new wood is light in color when the tree is growing in spring and summer, and dark in winter when the tree is not growing much. So,if you count the rings of darkorlight colored wood, you can often find out how old the tree is.
You can also tell which years have been good years and which years have been bad years. When the lightcolored rings are very wide,it means that the tree has been growing quickly that year.If the rings are narrow,it has been growing slowly. If the rings on a tree trunk were greatly magnified, you would be able to see why the rings are lightcolored when the tree is growing quickly and darkcolored when the tree is growing slowly. The tree trunk is made up of microscopic tubes, like some pipes, carrying water from the soil, through the trunk, and up to the leaves. They are wide and thinwalled when the tree is growing quickly and they are carrying a lot of water. They are narrow and stuck together when the tree is not growing so quickly.
When a tree is old,the tubes in the centre of the tree don't carry water. The walls of the tubes have become thick with materials which have stuck along them over the years, forming a kind of wood called“heartwood”.This kind of wood is darker in color than the young, growing wood on the outside of the tree.
You don't very often see whole tree trunks which have been cut across. But once you learn to read a cross section of the wood, you can see much more in wood which has been used to make boxes, houses and other things.
In most wood, instead of seeing the trunk cut across, you are seeing it cut along its length.Because you don't see the whole tree, you can't tell how old it is.
