Phil Donahue, the former television talk show host, had something of a reputation for giving clergy(神職人員)a hard time, and he has said the reason he’s that way is that he has little respect for them. Most clergy will do anything for some media attention,he says.In his autobiography(自傳),however, he tells about an encounter with a minister who was different. It happened while Donahue was a young television reporter in Ohio, and one day he was sent to West Virginia in the bitter cold winter to cover a mine disaster. He went by himself in a battered little car, carrying a mini camera to film the story.
It was so cold when he got there, however, the camera wouldn’t work.So he put it inside his coat to warm it up enough to run.In the meantime, the families of the trapped miners were gathered around. The),were just simple mining people—women, old men,and children.Several of the trapped men were fathers.
Then the local minister arrived. He was tall and thin, and he didn’t speak well at a11.But he gathered all the families around in a circle, and the held one another in their arms while he prayed for them.
As this was going on,Donahue was still trying to get his camera to work, and he was extremely disappointed because he couldn’t film the scene. Finally, after the prayer was over,Donahue managed to get his camera operating. So he told the minister he had his camera working now and asked if the minister would please do the prayer again so he could film it for the evening news.
This simple West Virginia preacher, however,told Donahue,“Young man,we don’t pray for the news.I’m sorry,but we’ve already prayed,and I will not pose.”
To this day,Donahue remembers that minister with respect. You don’t forget that kind of character,no matter who you are or what you believe.

第一段2,3行he has said the reason he’s that way is that he has little respect for them. Most clergy will do anything for some media attention,he says.
小題2:A
根據(jù)第一段4,5行one day he was sent to West Virginia in the bitter cold winter to cover a mine disaster.可知這里的report the accident就是cover a mine disaster,即對礦難進(jìn)行采訪。故A正確。
It was so cold when he got there, however, the camera wouldn’t work.可知,由于天冷,he camera wouldn’t work(照相機(jī)不能用了)。
This simple West Virginia preacher, however,told Donahue,“Young man,we don’t pray for the news.I’m sorry,but we’ve already prayed,and I will not pose.”
1.He went by himself in a battered little car, carrying a mini camera to film the story.
【分析】本句中的現(xiàn)在分詞短語carrying a mini camera to film the story在句中充當(dāng)是狀語,因為動詞carry與句子主語he構(gòu)成邏輯上的主動關(guān)系,所以使用現(xiàn)在分詞形式,在句中做狀語。
2. You don’t forget that kind of character,no matter who you are or what you believe.
【分析】本句中的no matter who you are or what you believe在句中充當(dāng)讓步狀語從句,“特殊疑問詞+ever”既可以引導(dǎo)讓步狀語從句,也可以引導(dǎo)名詞性從句;而“no matter+特殊疑問詞”只能引導(dǎo)讓步狀語從句。

When I decided to quit my job as a wedding photographer, I was in my late twenties, fresh from my divorce from Bob who had left me empty and confused. I decided to leave the US and travel. I had no savings, plus more than $5,000 in debt. What I did have were two sponsored tasks as a travel photographer- and with that along, I thought, it would be easy.
My first experience was a road trip from Toronto to Las Vegas, paid for by a car delivery service. Other trips followed and then I started a travel blog (博客). It was intended to be my calling card for assignment travel photography. Yet even with my blog and past experience, email after email I sent to publications, trying to get work, went unanswered. When they did get in touch, editors told me that I had no chance of making a career with travel photography. While I struggled to get on the path that I wanted, and as I expanded my blog to help get me there, I found myself wearing the hat of a full-time blogger.
Luckily, I got in at the right time. It was 2010,and the travel industry was just starting to turn its attention to bloggers. As I never could have predicted, my blogging-not my photography-did take me around the world successfully. At first,I thought it was for personal reasons, but I realized later that it was for free marketing for my blogging.
Within two years, I was being asked to speak at travel blogging conferences, which helped me to raise a network of friends around the world. Even more meaningful, however, was when I saw that my travels were also helping other people. My blog and social media followers saw that I chased my dreams and told me over and over again how they needed that kind of example, which was absent in their lives elsewhere.

Any introduction to Peking Opera would not be complete without telling of Mei Lanfang. He was also the first artist to introduce Peking Opera to an overseas audience, making it popular to the world.
Mei Lanfang began his stage life at the age of 8. His teacher said he showed little hope because of his boring eyes. To improve this, he exercised them day after day. Thanks to his efforts, he managed to change his dull eyes into a pair of bright and expressive eyes and win national fame before the age of 20.

One night, when I was eight , my mother gently asked me a question I would never forget. “Sweetie, my company wants to       me but needs me to work in Brazil. This is like your teacher telling that you’ve done        and allowing you to skip a grade(跳級), but you’ll have to       your friends. Would you say yes to your teacher?” She gave me a hug and asked me to think about it. I was puzzled. The question kept me     for the rest of the night I had said “yes” but for the first time, I realized the     decisions adults had to make.
For almost four years, my mother would call us from Brazil every day. Every evening I’d        wait for the phone to ring and then tell her every detail of my day. A phone call, however, could never replace her       and it was difficult not to feel lonely at times.
During my fourth-grade Christmas break, we flew to Rio to visit her. Looking at her large       apartment, I became       how lonely my mother must have been in Brazil herself. It was then     I started to appreciate the tough choices she had to make on       family and work.       difficult decisions, she used to tell me, you wouldn’t know whether you make the right choice, but you could always make the best out of the situation, with passion and a       attitude.
Back home , I       myself that what my mother could do, I could, too. If she        to live in Rio all by herself, I, too, could learn to be       . I learn how to take care of myself and set high but achievable    .
My mother is now back with us. But I will never forget what the       has really taught me. Sacrifices       in the end. The separation between us has proved to be       for me.

It is a wonderful morning, as I write this: hot, but without being too hot.Outside my window, I can see the sunniest sky of the year reflected in a huge natural expand of water. It is the kind of sun that makes you well aware of summer's temporary nature a reminder that if I am ever to go around to book this year's holiday, time is running out.
It is now close to four years since I last took a holiday. This is because I have come to the conclusion, over the course of my adult life, that I am not very good at it.You might say this sounds like saying you are not very good at drinking tea or listening to music. What could possibly be difficult about the natural act of putting your working life on hold for a couple of weeks and going somewhere to do nothing?
So what is my problem? On the surface, I'm probably a bit of homebody. And I just find the pressure of being on holiday too severe: it always feels like having a gun held to my head and being forced to have fun.Somehow, packing a carefully itemized(詳細(xì)列舉的)list of possessions and meeting a scheduled flight has none of the excitement of suddenly deciding to take a day off and driving somewhere for the fun of it.
Thankfully, I am not alone. This summer, most of my friends have decided not to have a break. And a recent survey highlighted the downside(負(fù)面)of holidays, with the results showing that nearly two thirds of people found that the calming effects of a holiday wore off within 24 hours, as stress levels returned to normal. And this year's the Idler magazine published its hook, Awful Holidays. Here you will find a list of the five most ecologically-damaging vacations it's possible to take, along with 50 horrible holidays experiences voted for on the idler website. Over the last decade, The Idler has become well known for promoting the idea of an easy, lazy life. The leisure(休閑)industry might seem an unlikely target of its criticism, but Dan Kienan, the book ' s editor, says that he was flooded with entries from readers for his list of awful holidays.
小題1:According to the first paragraph we can know that the writer
A.has a strong desire to book a holiday
B.wishes that the weather would change
C.finds it is too late to enjoy the sunshine
D.realizes it's time to decide whether to go on a holiday
小題2:The reason why the writer dislikes going on holidays is that
A.it usually costs too much money
B.he is tired of making preparations too much for holidays
C.it is far less enjoyable than breaks planned in advance
D.he feels embarrassed when other people are having fun but he isn't
小題3:We can learn from the survey that
A.most people pretend to enjoy their holiday
B.a(chǎn)ll people fail to relax while they are on holiday
C.a(chǎn) lot of people feel that the benefits of going on holidays are limited
D.many people have made the same decision as the writer and most of his friends
小題4:The writer takes the book of Awful Holidays as an example to
A.damage the reputation of the magazine
B.prove the idea of living an easy, lazy life to be wrong
C.indicate that his dislike of holidays is widely shared
D.focus entirely on bad personal experiences of holidays

While the presence of rats in homes may cause anxiety and annoyance, they rarely result in driving out the residents. But that is exactly what happened to the inhabitants of the 10squaremile Hawadax Island off the coast of Alaska, almost 230 years ago. Now thanks to a fiveyear effort by scientists, the terribly silent “Rat Island” as it had been called for many years has been returned to its rightful owners ——birds!
Hawadax Island is part of a chain of volcanic islands in the Bering Sea called the Aleutian Islands. The rats that arrived there in 1780, when a Japanese ship carrying them broke down nearby, completely destroyed the native population because the environment of the island was not built to defend its animals from these predators. There isn't any tree on the Island, which meant that the birds were accustomed to building their nests low in the ground, giving the rodents(嚙齒動物) easy access to both eggs and baby chicks. As years passed, the birds that had called the island home for thousands of years became endangered and eventually, disappeared completely.
In 2007, the U.S. FWS (Fish and Wildlife Service) started a serious plan to rid the island of the rats and try bringing back the beautiful birds that had once called it home. Given that there were an estimated 10,000 rodents inhabiting “Rat Island” and the fact that they reproduce rapidly, it was not an easy task. But by 2009, the Island was officially declared rat free!
Then slowly but surely, the birds began to return. Unfortunately, some of the pioneers were unintentionally killed from the leavings of the raticide, a poison that had been used to wipe out the rodents. But now it seems things are becoming more stable and the Island is starting to increasingly look like its former self. Before the transformation, “Hawadax”, also known as “Rat Island”, was a silent and ghostly place with bird bones, snail remains and rocks covered in rat feces(糞便).
Today, birds' singing and flying in and out is a common sight. Tufted puffins and song sparrows, which had long disappeared, are gradually making their way back. Scientists have also been observing an increase in ground nesting and shorebirds. Though the Island is still not back to its full glory, the signs are encouraging and things can only get better, as time passes.
小題1:The underlined word “that”in Para.1 probably refers to ________.
A.the presence of rats
B.birds' being driven out
C.birds' returning to the island
D.residents' worrying about rats
小題2:Birds on Hawadax Island became an easy target because ________.
A.this island was treeless

小題3:From the passage, we can know the plan of US FWS ______.
A.has helped the island fully recovered
B.cost little but benefited greatly
C.involved poisoning the rats on a large scale
D.a(chǎn)ccomplished its goal after exactly 24 months
小題4:Which would be the best title for the passage?
A.FWS Help Get Rare Birds Back to Alaska Island
B.Japanese Changed a Bird Paradise into Rat Island
C.FWS Plan to Drive Rats Out Of Rat Island
D.Alaska's Rat Island Returns to a Bird Paradise
