【題目】Many people have bought insurance, either life or property (財產), commercial or compulsory. Yet some people know little about it and some even misunderstand its nature and function.
Insurance is the sharing of risks. Nearly everyone is exposed to a risk of some sort. The house owner, for example, knows that his property can be damaged by fire; the shipowner knows that his ships may be lost at sea; the breadwinner knows that he may die at an early age and leave his family poorer. On the other hand, not every house is damaged by fire nor every ship is lost at sea. If these persons each put a small amount of money into a pool, there will be enough to meet the needs of the few who do suffer losses. In other words, the losses of the few are met from the contributions of the many. This is the basis of insurance. Those who pay the contribution are known as the insured and those who manage the pool of contributions as insurers.
The legal basis of all insurance is the policy. This is a printed form of contract on a piece of paper in best quality. It states that every year the insured shall pay an amount of which is called the premium; in return, the insurer will pay an amount of money or compensation for losses if the risk or event insured against actually happens.
The premium for insurance naturally depends upon how likely the risk is to happen, as suggested by past experience. If companies fix their premiums too high, there will be more competition in their area of insurance and they may lose business. On the other hand, if they make the premium too low, they will lose money and may even have to drop out of business. So the ordinary forces of supply and demand keep premiums at a level satisfactory to both the insurer and the insured.
【1】The underlined phrase in Para. 2 most probably means __________.
A. money paid by the insurers
B. each premium
C. money paid by all those insured
D. the cost of administering insurance
【2】Insurance premiums do not become too high because __________.
A. not many people insure themselves
B. premiums depend on the risk of losses
C. insurers have to be more competitive
D. insurance companies can never lose money
【3】According to the passage, insurance business gains profit because __________.
A. more and more people buy insurance
B. the firms have sound management
C. the premium is increased year by year
D. only a few of those insured suffer losses
【4】The purpose of the passage is to __________.
A. explain an insurance policy
B. introduce insurance business
C. persuade people to be insured
D. warn people of possible losses
【答案】
【1】C
【2】C
【3】D
【4】B
【解析】本文主要對保險進行了簡要介紹。
【1】C
猜測詞義題。根據第二段“If these persons each put a small amount of money into a pool, there will be enough to meet the needs of the few who do suffer losses”可推知the pool of contributions表示投保人所投的錢。故選C.
【2】C
細節(jié)推理題。根據最后一段“If companies fix their premiums too high, there will be more competition in their area of insurance and they may lose business”可知保險公司也有競爭,因此保險費不能定得太高,否則就沒有競爭力,也就意味著可能會失去業(yè)務,故選C.
【3】D
推理判斷題。根據第二段“On the other hand, not every house is damaged by fire nor every ship is lost at sea” “enough to meet the needs of the few who do suffer losses”和“the losses of the few”可推知保險公司獲利是因為只有少部分投保人遭受意外風險。故選D.
【4】B
推理判斷題。文章第一段點題,再結合全文的整體內容可推知,本文主要介紹的是保險業(yè)務,故選B.

【題目】About three decades ago, China was known as the “Bicycle Kingdom”. But the two-wheeled way of transport’s popularity began to fade, with many bikes soon replaced by their fuel-powered competitors.
But recent months have seen a revival of the bike across China, with an increasing number of people choosing cycling instead of driving to schools, to workplaces or to do sightseeing. The introduction of bike-sharing systems has brought the trend to a new level.
People can unlock the shared bikes by simply using their smartphones. The bikes are equipped with GPS and can be left anywhere in public for the next user. They’re popular among many Chinese people as they provide an effective solution to the “l(fā)ast mile” problem, which refers to the final leg of a person’s journey.
However, the systems have also led to problems such as illegal parking, damage and theft. Last month, two nurses in Beijing were placed under arest for five days for putting locks on two shared bikes.
“Bike-sharing is a greener method of transportation and provides a user-friendly experience,” said Liu Xiaoming, vice-minister of transport. “ But it’s a combination of online and offline business. Operators are usually strong in online services, but lack offline business experience, which causes problems.”
Now, Chinese service operators are trying to handle these problems. For example, a bike-sharing company called Mobike sets a 100-piont credit score for each user, with points taken in the case of bad behavior. Once a score drops below 80, bike rental is increased to 100 yuan per 30 minutes, up from 0.5-1 yuan.
【1】The underlined word “revival” in paragraph 2 probably means ________.
A. survival B. recovery
C. existence D. popularity
【2】The bike-sharing systems are popular because ________.
A. they are very effective B. they can be picked up anywhere
C. they are equipped with GPS D. they help to solve the “l(fā)ast mile” problem
【3】To solve the problems of illegal parking, damage and theft, operators need to ________.
A. offer stronger online services B. combine online and offline business
C. provide credit score for users D. obtain more offline business experience
