We took a rare family road trip to the Adirondacks in late August, and it was as refreshing and exhausting as family vacations tend to be.Toward the end of our long drive home, even the kids were leaning forward in their seats urging my lead foot on.At that point in a road trip, even sixty-five miles per hour feels slow. We have become numb to our speed and numb to the road signs flashing by.
My family lives on the edge of Lancaster County. Only thirty miles from home,I hit the brakes, and we began to roll, slowly, behind a horse-drawn carriage. We began to open our eyes again. We saw familiar green hills and the farm with the best watermelons. I rolled down the windows, and we breathed again.Just-cut hay and a barn full of dairy cattle.
At five miles per hour, you remember what you forget at sixty-five.You are thinking about a place, even when you are moving from place to place.
I am a placemaker. A homemaker, too. I am a mother of a young kid at home, and also a writer and a gardener. But,for me,those roles are wrapped up with the one big thing I want to do with the rest of my life:I want to cultivate a place and share it with others.
The place I make with my family is a red-brick farmhouse built in l880. It has quite a few nineteenth-century bedrooms and a few acres of land, and we love nothing more than to fill them with neighbors and friends. We grow vegetables and flowers, keep a baker’s dozen of egg—laying chickens, and, since we moved in three years ago,we have planted many, many trees.
Living with my life’s purpose does not allow for much travel. I need to be here, feeding the chickens and watering the tomatoes. Any extra in the budget, and we spend it on trees.
But I learned something at the end of our family road trip.Travel can help me in the task of caring for my own place. When I slow down and pay attention to the road between here and there, travel tells me the connections between my place and all the other places.
1. What does the author try to express in the first paragraph?
A.The tiredness of her past family life.
B.Her disappointment at the family road trip.
C.The family’s eagerness to return home.
D.Kids’excitement at driving fast on the road.
2.Why did the author slow her car some miles from her home?
A.Because she made a way for a horse-drawn carriage.
B.Because she enjoyed the scenery along the road.
C.Because she needed a break after the long drive.
D.Because she wanted to get rid of a fast-paced life.
3.The underlined word“placemaker’’in the 4th paragraph refers to someone who .
A.devotes most of his energy and time to building his house
B.is ready to help anyone in need in the community
C.makes a creative design for others’ houses
D.is good at cultivating a place and sharing it with others
4. What can be the best title of the passage?
A.On the Way Home B.Never Travel again
C.Escape from a Family Life D.Life on the Farm

Teenagers who spend hours in front the television may have a poorer diet as young adults.
A study, which included nearly 1,400 high school students, found those who watched TV for five hours or more per day had less healthy diets than peers(同齡人) five years later. Why does this happen? Should the parents take any measures?
On the one hand, people who spend a lot of time in front of the TV, especially teenagers, may snack more, and that may affect their long-term diet quality.
On the other hand, TV ads for fast food, sweets and snacks tempt teenagers to eat more of those foods. And TV time might also replace exercise time for some kids.
Lead researcher Dr. Daheia J. Barr-Anderson, of the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis, told Reuters Health a clear correlation between TV time during high school and diet quality in young adulthood. While the heaviest TV viewers were eating the most junk food, those who’d watched less than two hours per day had the highest intake(吸收) of fruits, vegetables, whole grains and high-calcium food. In her opinion, parents should limit and monitor TV viewing.
As far as I am concerned, children should watch no more than two hours of television per day. And parents should set a good example by eating right, being physically active and curbing their own TV time.
1.What’s the best title for this passage?
A. People Should Keep Away from TV to Keep Healthy
B. Teenagers’ TV Time May Affect Their Diets Later
C. Why Do Teenagers Like TV?
D. Parents’ Own Habits May Affect Children Later
2.What suggestion does the author give the parents?
A. They must watch TV with their children.
B. They can’t do what they don’t want their children to do.
C. They should forbid the children to watch TV.
D.They should pay attention to nutrition in diets.
3.The underlined word “ curbing” in the last paragraph can be replaced by “_________”.
A. adding B. stopping
C. controlling D. checking
4.According to the passage, heavy TV viewers tend to _________.
A. eat more fruits
B. take in fewer vegetables
C. eat less junk food
D. take in high-calcium food

You may not have heard of Ashoka, but for the past 27 years, this association, founded by Bill Drayton, has fought poverty (貧窮)and sickness, promoted education and encouraged small businesses. To support these worthy causes, Ashoka provides money for the world's most promising "changemakers" seeking to solve (解決) urgent problems and would like to create a world in which every citizen is a changemaker.
Drayton believes that anyone can become an agent for change. The important thing is to simply give yourself permission. If you see a problem that you care about, you can help solve it. The young in particular are willing to accept this concept because at heart every child wants to grow into a happy, healthy, contributing adult. In fact, it is many young people's ambition to set up programmes or businesses that improve social conditions. An excellent example is an Ashoka project started in 1995 in Dhaka, which handled the rubbish problem facing the city , helped local farmers and provided an income for poor people there .
When Masqsood and Iftekhar began to study the problem of all the uncollected rubbish that lay in Dhaka’s streets, Attracting tats and disease , they discovered that 80% of it was natural waste . So they educated the poor people in the city to compost (把……制成堆糞)this waste . They knew that they would have a market for the end product because local farmers were struggling with chemical ferntilisers (化肥) which were expensive and had reduced the natural minerals in the soil over the years . At first , they were refused , but once they were able to persuade them that there was money to be made , the project took off. In 2009 sales were $14,000.
Drayton is optimistic that in ten years Ashoka will be making really serious, practical progress in bringing about social change by changing the way we look at economic development.

Question: My 14-year-old son is very disrespectful to my husband and me, and we don’t know what to do. He often gets home after dark. And we have a big argument after he comes back. Can you help us?
Answer: Your son should, of course, come back before dark, not because you say so, but because it is his responsibility and because you would worry about him if he didn’t come home when he promised. 1. . Just tell him that he has to be home on time if he wants to go out next time — and that this is his choice, not yours.
His disrespect is part of a bigger issue. Your son desires independence because the young always do when they hit puberty (青春期). New hormones (荷爾蒙), a new need to pull away from their parents results in this desire. 2. .
Your son may also be acting up because your discipline hasn’t kept up with his growth. A child hates to be corrected when his parents use the same words they used when correcting him a year ago. 3. .
He won’ t even argue with you too much, if you listen to his rants (咆哮) and consider his reasons when you have to say no. You need to know that your respect is as important as his respect. 4. . This doesn’t complete anything and must worsen your relationship.
Your child not only needs your respect. 5. . They need your pity for him when things go wrong, rather than tell him what he should have done. Now is the time to give as few orders as possible (but stick to the ones you give).
A. But don’t worry.
B. But don’t argue about it.
C. He wants you to react to him at the age he is today.
D. So boys and girls are so eager to spread their wings.
E. If you don’t listen and consider, he won’t hear a word you say.
F. He is growing physically, mentally, emotionally and even morally.
G. He also needs you to encourage his dreams, no matter how strange they are.

Plenty of job seekers, according to career and workplace consultant Alexandra Levit, are making major mistakes at those big, important meetings with their would-be bosses. Candidates would do well to avoid the following interview mistakes:
1.
At most job interviews, both parties—the interviewer and the interviewee—are expected to ask questions. Do your homework on the company and make sure your questions aren’t so obvious that they can be answered with a five-second Google search.
“ 2. You shouldn’t ask too many general questions because they might have the opinion that you should know some of the answers.” Levit said.
Talking too much.
Even if you’re really smart, you won’t impress anybody if you don’t do your fair share of listening.
“It should be a two-way conversation,” Levit said. “ 3. Really take the time to read between the lines and pay attention to what they are saying.”
Treating the interviewer like a friend.
Of course you want to be friendly with your interviewer, but it’s important to remember that this person is not someone with whom you’ll be throwing back a few beers next weekend. You have to keep your guard up.
“You don’t want to treat them as if they’re someone you can take into your confidence.” Levit said. “ 4. ”
Bad-mouthing your last employer.
Sometimes, even your last boss was Satan himself. 5. Find a way to put a positive reason on why you left—or plan to leave—your last job.
“Don’t say, ‘Oh I left because my company was insufferable,’” Levit said. “The employer is going to be sitting there thinking you’re going to be saying that about them in three years and it isn’t going to fill them with confidence.”
A. Asking proper questions.
B. Failing to ask smart questions.
C. A job interview is not the time to uncover it.
D. Listen more and you’ll have more answers.
E. You’re not going to learn as much about their needs if you don’t listen.
F. You should portray yourself as confident, enthusiastic and professional.
G. You are supposed to have some knowledge of the industry and the position.
