In 1996, John Tierney suggested in the New York Times Magazine article that “recycling is garbage.” He wrote, “The money spent on recycling programs should have been spent on real social and environmental problems. Recycling programs not only increase energy use and pollution, but also cost more money than the disposal (處理) of plain old garbage. Recycling may be the most wasteful activity in modern America.”

Environmental groups were quick to express their disagreement. They wrote reports on how recycling programs in cities can reduce pollution and cost less than regular garbage pickup and disposal. Michael Shapiro, an official of the US Environmental Protection Agency(EPA), said that “recycling can be good value for money, although there’s still room for improvements.”

But in 2002, New York City, a pioneer of recycling, found that its recycling program was losing money, so it stopped glass and plastic recycling. Other major cities watched closely to see how New York was dealing with its remaining program (the city never stopped paper recycling). But then it closed its last landfill (垃圾填埋地), and private companies out of New York raised prices due to the increased workload of carrying away and disposing New York’s garbage. As a result, glass and plastic recycling became profitable for the city again, and New York brought the program back. According to Cecil Adams of The Chicago Reader, the lessons learned by New York are relevant everywhere. He believes that, if managed correctly, recycling programs should cost cities less than garbage disposal.

Even though the benefits of recycling over disposal are many, keep in mind that it better serves the environment to “reduce and reuse” before recycling is even considered as a choice.

1.Why did John Tierney think “recycling is garbage”?

A. Because he considered recycling a wasteful activity.

B. Because he didn’t think recycling was a new idea.

C. Because he found few people would like to recycle.

D. Because he didn’t like the environmental groups.

2.Which argument was put forward by the environmental groups?

A. Recycling technologies are mature.

B. Recycling programs save money.

C. Recycling programs cause pollution.

D. Recycling technologies are valueless.

3.Why did other cities watch closely to see how New York was doing?

A. Because New York was doing extremely well.

B. Because they didn’t want to have a recycling program

C. Because they felt worried about the waste of money.

D. Because New York was running a new recycling program.

4.Which of the following would the author most probably recommend?

A. Always bring your own shopping bag when you go shopping.

B. Always put your shopping bag into the dustbin after use.

C. Never go shopping where shopping bags are offered for free.

D. Never use a shopping bag which is not recycled.

One of the special features of English people is self-discipline (自律). Generally, English people are polite and always want to please others. On the other hand, they don’t like to show their emotions, even in dangerous situations. Imagine the scene! Some English people are caught in a violent storm in the forest. Anybody else would be anxious to run away. The English would just try to hide their emotions. Not a sign of fear would be seen on their faces.

We often hear of the English "reserve"(矜持). On a long railway journey, with four Englishmen sitting together, often there won’t be a single word spoken during the whole journey. The English think it is a bad manner to ask personal questions. That wouldn’t be the case in America. In a short ride in New York, a taxi driver will tell you about himself, his wife and his family, and probably the towns of England he has visited, too.

The English value privacy (隱私) very much. An Englishman’s house usually has a small garden with a fence all around to separate it from the neighbors’. An Englishman’s house is his castle.

Finally, we have to refer to the most special feature of the Scottish (蘇格蘭的) people —the Scottish dress. Scotland is probably best known to the world for its traditional costume —the kilt. This short, skirt-like piece of clothing is worn by men.

The kilt is made of a special type of colorful cloth called tartan, which is very special in Scotland.

1.When the English are in a dangerous situation they usually _______.

A. laugh at other people B. behave very bravely

C. hide their emotions D. run away immediately

2.In the second paragraph the author mentions a taxi driver in New York to ________.

A. explain what a personal question is

B. show the bad manners of Americans

C. show that English people are not very polite

D. show the reserve of the English

3.What do we know about the kilt in the last paragraph?

A. It’s long and just like a skirt.

B. It’s worn by both men and women.

C. It’s made of a special type of cloth in Scotland.

D. It’s a traditional costume all over Great Britain.

4.What can we learn about the English from the passage?

A. They are not very confident.

B.A house with a fence all around makes them feel safe.

C.They usually don’t respect others’ privacy.

D. They prefer a house with a garden to a flat.

I grew up in Malaysia. Since we did not have many toys, we used rubber bands (橡皮筋) to make a jump rope. Three years ago, when my daughters Michelle and Theresa were 9 and 12 years old, they were making bracelets (手環(huán)) using rubber bands. It struck me that I knew how to do that. I like to impress my daughters and show them that their dad is cool, so I tried it too. To my surprise, I couldn’t work with the bands because my fingers were too big.

Since I studied engineering, I decided to come up with a solution (解決辦法). I ran down to my basement and found a piece of wooden board, some pushpins and hooks (圖釘和鉤子). With the help of these things, I managed to make a bracelet. One of my daughters said, “Wow, that’s cool, but I can make it by hand.” So I started to put two, three, four, five rows together. I crossed the bands into diamond patterns using rainbow colors, which is how the Rainbow Loom (彩虹織機(jī)) got its name.

My daughters were so excited that they showed the bracelets to their friends. We started to get requests for them. But they were still difficult to make. I thought, “If I can make a small, easy-to-use loom, I’m onto something big.” It took six months and a lot of support from my kids to perfect the idea.

I tried to sell the loom by making videos about how to use it and taking my daughters to stores to show it. Many store owners thought it might be too difficult to use. For a year, we sold it only on our website. When it became popular with kids, it got noticed by toy stores.

It is so exciting that a simple idea my kids and I came up with together at our living-room table has become a nationwide fad.

1.The author tried to show his daughters how to make bracelets but _____.

A. was refused B. regretted

C. failed D. was misunderstood

2.The author made up his mind to find a method of _____.

A. making bracelets

B. using a jump rope

C. impressing his daughters

D. inventing the Rainbow Loom

3.The underlined word “them” in Paragraph 3 refers to _____.

A. looms B. bracelets

C. friends D. rainbows

4.What did store owners think of the author’s invention at first?

A. They thought highly of it.

B. They had a long wait for it.

C. They showed a great interest in it.

D. They thought there was no market for it.
