Your house may have an effect on your figure.Experts say the way you design your home could play a role in whether you pack on the pounds or keep them off.You can make your environment work for you instead of against you. Here are some ways to turn your home into part of your diet plan.

Open the curtains and turn up the lights.Dark environments are more likely to encourage overeating, for people are often less self-conscious(難為情) when they’re in poorly lit places — and so more likely to eat lots of food.If your home doesn’t have enough window light, get more lamps and flood the place with brightness.

Mind the colors.Research suggests warm colors fuel our appetites. In one study, people who ate meals in a blue room consumed 33 percent less than those in a yellow or red room.Warm colors like yellow make food appear more appetizing, while cold colors make us feel less hungry. So when it’s time to repaint,go blue.

Don’t forget the clock — or the radio.People who eat slowly tend to consume about 70 fewer calories(卡路里)per meal than those who rush through their meals.Begin keeping track of the time, and try to make dinner last at least 30 minutes. And while you’re at it,actually sit down to eat.If you need some help slowing down, turn on relaxing music. It makes you less likely to rush through a meal.

Downsize the dishes.Big serving bowls and plates can easily make us fat.We eat about 22 percent more when using a 12-inch plate instead of a 10-inch plate. When we choose a large spoon over a smaller one, total intake(攝入) jumps by 14 percent. And we’ll pour about 30 percent more liquid into a short, wide glass than a tall, skinny glass.

Probably you have seen photographs of the Grand Canyon, the great valley in the desert country of Arizona. But you must go there yourself to feel its true size and beauty. The Grand Canyon is one of the greatest natural wonders of the world.

The Colorado River formed the Grand Canyon over millions of years.Slowly, the river cut down through hard rocks. At the same time, the land was rising.Today, the canyon is one and a half kilometers deep and 446 kilometers long. The oldest rocks at the bottom of the canyon are more than one billion years old.The width varies from about 200 meters to 29 kilometers across. The rim or top of the canyon is about 2,300 meters above sea level on the South Rim,and about 3,000 meters on the other side, the North Rim.As a result, there are different kinds of plants and animals on opposite sides of the canyon. The South Rim is a dry desert country. The North Rim has tall forests.

The canyon looks different at different times of a day,and in different seasons and weather. At sunrise and sunset the black, gold, brown, and orange colours of the rocks are especially clear and bright. In winter, the canyon is partly covered with snow.

The view from the South Rim of the Grand Canyon is the best. Most visitors come to the South Rim and stay in campgrounds or hotels.Every point along the canyon’s edge offers a different view.

The North Rim of the Canyon is quieter. It takes all day to drive there from the South Rim because there is only one bridge across the Colorado River. On the way,you go through Navajo Indian lands, and a colourful pink desert called “The Painted Desert”.

You can walk down into the Grand Canyon,or you can go down on the back of a mule. You can also take a boat trip down the Colorado River, and camp on the beaches at night. But whether you see the Grand Canyon from the top or the bottom,it will be an experience that you will never forget.

Kong Zi,also called Confucius(551—479 B.C.),and Socrates(469—399 B.C.)lived only a hundred years apart.During their lifetimes there was no contact between China and Greece, but it is interesting to look at how the world that each of these great philosophers came from shaped their ideas, and how these ideas in turn, shaped their societies.

Neither philosopher lived in times of peace, though there were more wars in Greece than in China. The Chinese states were very large and feudal, while the Greek city-states were small and urban. The urban environment in which Socrates lived allowed him to be more radical(激進的)than Confucius.Unlike Confucius,Socrates was not asked by rulers how to govern effectively. Thus,Socrates was able to be more idealistic, focusing on issues like freedom, and knowledge for its own sake.Confucius,on the other hand, advised those in government service, and many of his students went on to government service.

Confucius suggested the Golden Rule as a principle for the conduct of life.“Do not do to others what you would not want others to do to you.” He assumed that all men were equal at birth, though some had more potential than others, and that it was knowledge that set men apart.Socrates focused on the individual, and thought that the greatest purpose of man was to seek wisdom. He believed that some had more potential to develop their reason than others did.Like Confucius,he believed that the superior class should rule the inferior(下層的) classes.

For Socrates, the family was of no importance, and the community of little concern. For Confucius, however, the family was the centre of society, with family relations considered much more important than political relations.

Both men are respected much more today than they were in their lifetimes.

C.The societies were influenced by the philosophers’ ideas.

D.There were cultural exchanges between China and Greece.

A.time and events

“It is obvious that China will climb up university rankings in the years to come.”This statement from Phil Baty, editor of the Times Higher Education World University Rankings, lines up with China’s optimism that it will produce world-class universities. But there are still difficulties to overcome, experts say.

Universities from China’s mainland slipped in the 2011-2012 Times’ global rankings. Peking University dropped 12 places from last year to 49th, and Tsinghua University fell to 71st place. Among Asian universities, Peking is ranked No. 4 and Tsinghua No. 8.

A combination of factors determines rankings — research output, study environment, reputation and international outlook.

Due to China’s economic development, investment (投入) in education and research has increased, but the quality of education and research in Chinese academia seems not to have kept pace.

The gauge (判定標準) is the number of papers published in highly respected English-language journals, so while many papers are being produced in China, it appears not all are good enough to attract international attention.

Still, higher education in China is developing quickly, thanks in part to huge government investment. China spent an amount equal to 3.69 percent of GDP on education last year, according to Ministry of Finance data.

China has the largest and one of the fastest growing higher education systems in the world — 2,723 schools for 31 million students. Enrollment (入學人數(shù)) has increased more than four times from 2001 to 2011.

1.What’s Phil Baty’s attitude towards the future of Chinese universities?

A. Unconcerned. B. Uncertain.

C. Optimistic. D. Worried.

2.What was Peking University’s place in the 2010 Times’ global rankings?

A. No. 4. B. No. 37. C. No. 49. D. No. 59.

3.All the following are factors that determine a university’s ranking EXCEPT _____.

A. the quantity of its published papers

B. how good its study environment is

C. the number of its graduates

D. how well-known it is

4.What is the problem with papers produced in China?

A. Lack of variety.

B. Lack of quality.

C. Not being translated well.

D. Not being tested enough.

A rising population is one of the main reasons that there is global warming. Between 1650 and 1850 the population increased by 0.75 billion people going from 0.25 billion to one billion. From 1930 to the end of the century the population rose from two billion to over six billion. In just a third of the time the population rose by more than five times what it did before. It is expected that this trend in the changing population will continue and could even heighten. The growing population requires increasing amounts of energy. These energy demands and other supplies require production, which almost always involves the emission of greenhouse gases. The more the population increases the more greenhouse gases that are produced and the greater the increase in temperature.

The burning of fossil fuels is one of the best-known causes for global warming. The major reason for fossil fuels contributing so much to global warming is the release of carbon that occurs during the burning of fossil fuels. When people burn fossil fuels, they release large amounts of carbon by way of the release of carbon dioxide. The carbon dioxide in the air then leads to global warming.

Another source of carbon dioxide comes from deforestation. In forests there is a large amount of carbon that is stored in the trees and other plants. This carbon is out of the atmosphere because the trees consume the carbon from carbon dioxide. When people cut down trees, they are frequently burned. This burning releases the carbon dioxide into the atmosphere that was stored in organic matter. Even when new trees are planted, it can take up to one hundred years to make up for the carbon that was released. It is commonly thought that because trees absorb more carbon dioxide, the atmosphere experiences positive effects.

Sophie Armstrong, the writer of Earth Care put it, “There’s no doubt that the earth is becoming warmer because of human activity rather than a random but natural phenomenon.

1.Which of the following titles goes with the text?

A. A Rising Population

B. Saving Sources of Energy

C. Global warming: The causes

D. Carbon Dioxide

2.The underlined word “deforestation” means________ .

A. rising population B. burning of fossil fuels

C. greenhouse gas D. cutting down or burning trees.

3.To sum up from the passage, it is_________ that has caused global warming.

A. human activity B. sources of energy

C. natural forces D. the polluted atmosphere

4.Which column of a website might the passage come from?

A. Economy. B. Art C. Environment D. Health
