Dear editor:
I’m writing to tell you about the different attitudes towards the newly decision announced.
In June, 2009, the Education Department of Jiangsu Province made a decision that giving lessons during the summer vacation and weekends should be banned in middle and primary school. .
Many people support this decision. They think the measures based on it will ensure the students in middle and primary schools sleeping hours so that they can be energetic enough to study effectively during weekdays. Meanwhile, they have more chances for self-development. In addition, they can participate in community work, strengthening their awareness of public service.
However, some are against it. They complain the students lack self-control to arrange their free time properly. They believe less class time may result in low grades since the present examination system hasn’t been changed, they are difficult to cope with such fierce competition without extra lessons.
Personally, the decision is quite good. Before the decision was issued, in order to get good marks in the entrance examinations, most of our weekends or holidays were taken up with extra lessons, which happened in almost all high schools. We students suffered both physically and mentally. Anyhow, we badly need a balance between study and relaxation.
本題材緊密結合教育熱點,反映社會、家長和學生關心的問題。

The standard Outward Bound course lasts for three or four weeks. During that time the students live in the wilderness and go through many physical activities of ever increasing difficulty.
The first few days are given to physical conditioning and to the teaching of basic skills such as first aid, map and compass reading, rope climbing, and other similar activities.
During the second part of the course students learn how to climb rocks and cliffs, how to use canoes and rafts in swift water, and in some schools how to sail, ski, climb mountains, and make long-distance hikes.
The first two parts of the course are done in groups. Members work together and help each other to overcome the increasing number of challenges. In the third part of the course, students are sent out alone for three days to survive in the wilderness with only a few necessities.
Who are the students of Outward Bound? They are both young people and adults, men and women. The minimum age is 16.5 years. There is no maximum age. About one-third of the 6,000 persons completing the course each year are women. Businessmen, housewives, university students, professors, doctors, and lawyers are among those taking part in the course.
In recent years special courses for the busy business managers have gained in popularity. These courses last from five to ten days rather than the usual three to four weeks of the normal course.
Not all students complete the Outward Bound course. In some cases the individual cannot meet the physical challenges. In its own words Outward Bound literature says: "Make no mistake, Outward Bound is not for everybody. The courses aren't easy and are not meant to be."
Most students who finish the course share a common experience. They are surprised at themselves that they finish the course and they feel great pride in doing the impossible! The Outward Bound experience makes them feel that they are better than they know!

TLike most big projects, learning to manage your mother well is what you should do. Here are what I believe the best steps towards a better relationship with her. They are not necessarily surprising or revolutionary, but they have worked for many people. Try them.
Remember your mother’s age. As children, we often do not think of our mother as having an age. Even when we become conscious of her as an individual, age does not change our view; she is still our mother. Knowing our mother’s age, not just in numbers of years but in terms of her psychological and physical state, often helps us to understand her better.
Listen to your mother. I have found that sometimes the things my mother told me long ago are remarkably useful. If your mother knows that you respect her point of view, even if you do not share it, it will help her feel close to you.
Remember that your mother has a past. A key step in managing our relationship with our mother is to find out about her early life. Niclle’s mother suffered much during the Second War World War. “My parents are both Jewish-Turkish. They met in France and married young for love. They were in their twenties when war broke out and because they were Jews, they had to go into hiding. She does speak to me about the war, and I think it is important to know what she went through. It is a part of her life that must have affected her deeply. ” Sometimes, in learning about our mother’s past, we know that it can encourage us to think about her whole life.
Ask your mother about your childhood history. My grandparents died when I was young. If you are fortunate enough to have living family, think of your life as a jigsaw puzzle and ask as many questions as you can to put the picture together. Understanding your roots and your childhood can help you now more clearly who you are, as part of a family which you share with your mother.
Keep a sense of humor about your mother. When we hear about someone else’s misfortunes with their mothers and are amused by them, our laughter is one of recognition. I have often listened to stories of difficult mothers and I have also listened to the following piece of advice they have found most helpful is: “Don’t have a sense of humor failure about your mother. ”
Remember that managing your mother is really about managing yourself. Taking any measure to managing our mother is the issue of how we manage ourselves. No matter how difficult we find her, it is important to remember that is not her behavior it self that is causing us discomfort, but the way we feel about her behavior. We should follow the way of her life. At the heart of managing your mother is being able to accept your flawed self. Only then are you able to accept your mother—-with all her failings.
The followings are the steps you can take to get on with your mother EXCEPT________.
A. Remember your mother’s age and past
B. Share your roots and your childhood with your mother
C. Have a sense of humor failure about your mother
D. Managing your shortcoming while managing your mother
What does the underlined phrase “a jigsaw puzzle” mean?
A. 拼圖玩具 B. 瀏覽迷宮 C. 填充字謎 D. 游戲人生
Which of the following is implied but not stated in the passage?
A. It will help you have a better relationship with your mother if you respect her opinion.
B. You should follow a most useful piece of advice——a sense of humor.
C. The key measure of managing our mother is how we manage ourselves.
D. It is unreasonable to expect our mother to change totally from the way she was brought up.
The main purpose of writing the text is ________.
A. to give information about how we think of your mother.
B. to improve the relationship with your mother.
C. to keep a sense of humor about your mother all day long.
D. to accept your mother—-with all her failings.

Sandra Cisneros was born in Chicago in 1954 to a Mexican American family. As the only girl in a family of seven children, she often felt like she had “seven fathers,” because her six brothers, as well as her father, tried to control her. Feeling shy and unimportant, she retreated(躲避) into books. Despite her love of reading, she did not do well in elementary school because she was too shy to participate.
In high school, with the encouragement of one particular teacher, Cisneros improved her grades and worked for the school literary magazine. Her father encouraged her to go to college because her thought it would be a good way for her to find a husband. Cisneros did attend college, but instead of searching for a husband, she found a teacher who helped her join the famous graduate writing program at the University of Iowa. At the university’s Writers’ Workshop, however, she felt lonely----a Mexican American from a poor neighborhood among students from wealthy families. The feeling of being so different helped Cisneros find her “Creative voice.”
“It was not until this moment when I considered myself truly different that my writing acquired a voice. I knew I was a Mexican woman, but I didn’t think it had anything to do with why I felt so much imbalance in my life, but it had everything to do with it! That’s when I decided I would write about something my classmates couldn’t write about.”
Cisneros published her first work, The House on Mango Street, when she was twenty-nine. The book tells about a young Mexican American girl growing up in a Spanish-speaking area in Chicago, much like the neighborhoods in which Cisneros lived as a child. The book won an award in 1985 and has been used in classes from high school through graduate school level. Since then, Cisneros has published several books of poetry, a children’s book, and a short-story collection.
Which of the following is TRUE about Cisneros in her childhood?
A. She had seven brothers. B. She felt herself a nobody.
C. She was too shy to go to school.
D. She did not have any good teachers.
The graduate program gave Cisneros a chance to _____.
A. work for a school magazine B. run away from her family
C. make a lot of friends D. develop her writing style
According to Cisneros, what played the decisive role in her success?
A. Her early years in college. B. Her training in the Workshop.
C. Her feeling of being different. D. Her childhood experience.
What do we learn about The House on Mango Street?
A. It is quite popular among students.
B. It is the only book ever written by Cisneros.
C. It wasn’t success as it was written in Spanish.
D. It won an award when Cisneros was twenty-nine.
