【題目】For many people who live in cities, parks are an important landscape. They provide a place for people to relax and play sports, as well as a shelter from the often severe environment of a city. What people often overlook is that parks also provide considerable environmental benefits.

One benefit of parks is that plants absorb carbon dioxide and give off oxygen. According to one study, an acre of trees can absorb the same amount of carbon dioxide that a typical car emits in 11,000 miles of driving. Parks also make cities cooler. Scientists have long noted what is called the Urban Heat Island Effect: building materials such as metal and concrete (混凝土) absorb much more of the sun’s heat and release it much more quickly than trees and grass. Because city landscapes contain so much of these building materials, cities are usually warmer than surrounding rural areas. Parks and other green spaces help to lessen the Urban Heat Island Effect.

Unfortunately, many cities cannot easily create more parks. However, cities could benefit from many of the positive effects of parks by encouraging citizens to create another type of green space: rooftop gardens. While most people would not think of starting a garden on their roof, human beings have been planting gardens on rooftops for thousands of years. Some rooftop gardens are simple container gardens that anyone can create with the investment (投資) of a few hundred dollars and a few hours of work.

Rooftop gardens provide many of the same benefits as other urban parks and garden spaces, but without taking up the much-needed land. In the summer, rooftop gardens prevent buildings from absorbing heat from the sun, which can significantly reduce cooling bills. In the winter, gardens help control the heat that materials like brick and concrete release so quickly, leading to savings on heating bills. Rooftop vegetables and herb gardens can also provide fresh food for city settlers, making their diets healthier. Rooftop gardens are not only something everyone can enjoy but also a smart environmental investment.

1The underlined word “emits” in the second paragraph probably means _________.

A. gives out B. takes up

C. carries away D. breathes in

2Which of the following contributes to the Urban Heat Island Effect?

A. More building materials.

B. More trees and grass.

C. More parking lots.

D. More rooftop gardens.

3When it comes to rooftop gardens, what can be inferred from the passage?

A. They make people much happier.

B. They provide more benefits from urban parks.

C. They help to save money and keep a healthy diet.

D. They have become very popular in recent years.

4What’s the author’s attitude towards rooftop gardens?

A. Doubtful. B. Supportive. C. Critical. D. Objective.

【題目】閱讀下面短文,從每題所給的四項(xiàng)個選項(xiàng)(A,B,C和D)中選出最佳選項(xiàng)。
C
It has been more than 50 years since Harvard Business School started admitting women, yet the institution(機(jī)構(gòu)) is still trying hard to find out how to best attract and support them. Its latest effort: a program targeting women's colleges—place that are not traditional feeding grounds for the male-majority business school.
The program is called Peek. It offers juniors, seniors and recent graduates from women's colleges the opportunity to read and discuss four HBS case studies in class specially taught by top HBS members. About 50 to 70 promising students will pay $500 for their stay there.
Women make up 41 percent of Harvard Business School class of 2016---the most the school has had. In 1985, women made up only one-quarter of the graduating class. Harvard is not alone when it comes to struggling with a gender gap (性別差別). At Wharton, the class of 2016 is 40 percent women; at Standford Business School, it's 42 percent. No top business school had gotten to 50 percent yet.
Despite the Peek program's good intention, the $500 fee bothered someone, said John A. Byrne, the editor of business school new site. "The fact that HBS would charge women for the chance of coming to campus rubbed a lot of people the wrong way,” said Byrne. HBS said the $500 fee was a “fair price” for room and daily meals at the business school for a weekend, and didn't actually cover the full costs of the program.
For years, women students at Harvard Business School failed to keep pace with men. In 2010, Harvard business School got a new manager, Nitin Nohrin, who promised a turnaround. Nohrin designed a program to encourage women students and professors. He promised to change the school's case studies so that at least 20 percent of the people in the business texts would be women.
(1)What can we learn about the program Peek?
A.It is free for new students
B.It offers all kinds of business classes
C.It is helped by the best teachers
D.It is intended for high school students
(2)What is the main idea of the Paragraph 3?
A.women are not good at business management.
B.Women are less interested in business school.
C.Women students are less talented than men students.
D.Women students are becoming fewer and fewer in college.
(3)In the eyes of Byrne, Harvard's program ___________.
A.will be a total failure
B.will waste lots of money
C.doesn't have many good intention
D.will shut some students out
(4)What is the text mainly about?
A.HBS's new plan to attract more women students.
B.HBS's new manager Nitin Nohria.
C.HBS's effort to attract talented students.
D.HBS, the best business school ever world-wide.

A new camera made by a company named Netatmo has facial recognition software(識別系統(tǒng))that can tell parents at work that their children have returned from school, or that a package has been taken to their home. It can also tell them if a stranger has entered their home.
Janina Mattausch is a product marketing manager for Netatmo.
“The common security(安全)cameras at present are not that smart. So, they can tell you if something is moving but they don't necessarily know if it's a human being or, ah, if it's your kids—they don't' know the difference, so they will warn you all the time.”
When family members enter a home, the new camera "recognizes" (識別 ) them and sends information to the owner's smartphone. The owner can choose to see the video then or later. But if an unknown person enters a home, the camera will send the owner a warning that will cause an alarm to sound on the owner's smartphone.
That is what happened recently to a smart home camera owner named Darrmen. He lives in Paris.
"On a Friday I was at work, attending a big monthly meeting when my phone warned. At first I told myself 'Oh, it must be a mistake, maybe I have to set the system again. “But the notice on my phone was telling me that there was a movement in my flat and also a face that the software did not recognize.”
He watched the video and was very surprised by what he saw.
"I saw a person I did not know with his shoes on. I was watching it live on video. So I felt totally unbelievable, frozen. I asked a workmate to take me back home as fast as possible and I called the police on the way. "
With the help of the video, the police found the intruder (闖入者) later that day.
