The majority of astronauts(宇航員)from America have been men.At the start of the space programme there was strong resistance from some people against having women in space. However, some women were very keen to become astronauts and in the end they were successful. In 1978, NASA began the first training programme for women astronauts.
Judy Resnick and Christa McAuliffe were both astronauts and they were both women, but in many other ways they were very different. Both of them were on Flight STS-5L-L.Judy Resnick was born in 1949 and studied engineering at university and went on to obtain a PhD in 1977.She was a member of the first group of women selected for astronaut training in 1978, and in 1984, she became the second woman in space.During that flight, she helped to launch three new satellites and she carried out a programme of research. She was, in many ways, a professional astronaut whose whole life was devoted to space travel.
Christa McAuliffe was born in 1948 and she was an astronaut almost by accident. In 1984, NASA decided to find a teacher who could accompany astronauts into space. They hoped that she would be able to communicate with students from space and encourage every one of them to be interested in space travel.Christa was a secondary teacher in history and social studies. She was a gifted teacher and she was selected from over 11,000 applicants to go on flight STS-51-L.She was also a very good communicator and she immediately established a very good relationship with the news media(radio, television and newspapers). It was partly because of this that there was a great deal of interest and excitement about the flight.Thousands of students in schools and universities all around the country were looking forward to communicating with Christa in space.Millions of people were watching her flight with great interest. It is partly because of the excitement over McAuliffe's place in the flight that the disaster in 1986 had such an effect on people.

This afternoon, I spoke with Governor Daniel Malloy and FBI Director Mueller. I offered Governor Malloy my condolences(哀悼) on behalf of the nation, and made it clear he will have every single resource that he needs to investigate this horrible crime, care for the victims and their families.
The majority of those who died today were children—beautiful little kids between the ages of 5 and 10 years old. They had their entire lives ahead of them—birthdays, graduations, weddings, kids of their own. Among the fallen were also teachers—men and women who devoted their lives to helping our children fulfill their dreams.
So our hearts are broken today—for the parents and grandparents, sisters and brothers of these little children, and for the families of the adults who were lost. Our hearts are broken for the parents of the survivors as well, for as blessed as they are to have their children home tonight, they know that their children’s innocence has been torn away from them too early, and there are no words that will ease their pain.
As a country, we have been through this too many times. Whether it’s an elementary school in Newtown, or a shopping mall in Oregon, or a temple in Wisconsin, or a movie theater in Aurora, or a street corner in Chicago—these neighborhoods are our neighborhoods, and these children are our children. And we’re going to have to come together and take meaningful action to prevent more tragedies like this, regardless of the politics.
This evening, Michelle and I will do what I know every parent in America will do, which is hug our children a little tighter and we’ll tell them that we love them, and we’ll remind each other how deeply we love one another. But there are families in Connecticut who cannot do that tonight. And they need all of us right now. In the hard days to come, that community needs us to be at our best as Americans. And I will do everything in my power to help.
Because while nothing can fill the space of a lost child or loved one, all of us can extend a hand to those in need—to remind them that we are there for them, that we are praying for them, that the love they felt for those they lost endures not just in their memories but also in ours.

A. Two.B. Three.C. Four.D. Five.
3.What can we learn from this passage?
A. The survivors may also suffer from the shooting tragedy.
B. Nothing has been done to prevent gun shooting in America.
C. The victims of this gun shooting are all kids aged from 5 to 10.
D. Gun shooting is more likely to happen in American school campus.
4.The speaker wants the audience _______.
A. to help those in needB. to protect themselves

Does handwriting matter? Not very much, according to many educators. However, scientists say it is far too soon to declare handwriting is not important. New evidence suggests that the link between handwriting and educational development is deep.
Children not only learn to read more quickly when they first learn to write by hand, but they are also better able to create ideas and remember information. In other words, it’s not only what we write that matters — but how.
A study led by Karin James, a psychologist at Indiana University, gave support to that view. A group of children, who had not learned to read and write, were offered a letter or a shape on a card and asked to copy it in one of three ways: draw the image on a page but with a dotted outline(虛線(xiàn)), draw it on a piece of blank white paper, or type it on a computer. Then the researchers put the children in a brain scanner and showed them the image again.
It was found that when children had drawn a letter freehand without a dotted outline or a computer, the activity in three areas of the brain were increased. These three areas work actively in adults when they read and write. By contrast, children who chose the other two ways showed no such effect. Dr. James attributes the differences to the process of free handwriting: Not only must we first plan and take action in a way but we are also likely to produce a result that is variable. Those are not necessary when we have an outline.
It’s time for educators to change their mind and pay more attention to children’s handwriting.
1.What do scientists mean by saying “it is far too soon to declare handwriting is not important”?
A. Handwriting is not very important to children.
B. Handwriting has nothing to do with education.
C. Handwriting should not be ignored at present.
D. Handwriting can not be learned in a short time.
2.What does “that view” in Para. 3 refer to?
A. Children read quickly when they write by hand.
B. How we write is as important as what we write.
C. Children create ideas and remember information.
D. A group of students should know what to write.
3.Which is NOT the children’s task in the experiment?
A. Copy the image on a page but with a dotted outline.
B. Draw the image on a piece of blank white paper.
C. Type the image directly on a computer.
D. Put a brain scanner and show the image again.
4.According to the passage, the author obviously _______ giving up handwriting.
A. is for B. is against

Being bored can encourage people's creativity-partly to escape the horrible, frustrated. And meaningless feeling of boredom-recent studies find. It could even be true at work.
Psychologists at the University of Central Lancashire had participants copy numbers out of the telephone book for 15 minutes, while others went straight into a standard creativity task.
Both groups were asked to come up with as many different uses as they could for a plastic cup. The group that felt more bored came up with more uses.
Dr. Sandi Mann, one of the study's authors said. " Boredom at work has always been seen as
something to he removed. hut perhaps we should be welcoming it in order to encourage our creativity. What we want LO do next is to see what the practical implications of this finding are. Do people who are bored at work become more creative in other areas of their work-or do they go homeand write novels?"
In a later study, Dr. Sandi Mann found that creativity was reduced when people were still bored but didn't have the chance to daydream.
While we tend to think of boredom as something; that certainly leads to trouble-drinking, gambling. and antisocial behavior, this research suggests differer possibilities.
More than anything, the feeling of boredom is a 8trong signal that we are stuck in some kind of rut and we need to seek out new goals. In the study above, this research led participants to new ideas.
Usually people will do anything to avoid being bored. as it's such an aversive experience. But creative people, like writers, sometimes talk ahout seeking out boredom.
Here is the comedy writer Graham Linehan talking about boredom Lo The Cuardian. "I have to use all these programs that cut off the Internet, force me to be bored, because being bored is an essential part of writing, and the Internet has made it very hard to be bored. The creative process requires a period of boredom ,of being stuck. That's actually a very uncomfortable period that a lot of people mistake for writer's block, but it's actually just part of a long process. "
So, when you start to feel bored , instead of g7ancing at your smartphone.,try being bored for a bit. Who knows what creative thought might come of it?

Nelson Mandela is respected and admired across the world. And to South Africans he is a superstar. He is a hero who shocked the world by fighting for peace between races, despite the 27 years he spent in the prison of the South Africa’s white, racist regime(政權(quán)).
Mandela who won the nation’s first all-race elections after the fall of apartheid (種族隔離) in 1994, retired 1999.
But he remains as popular as ever.

His popular appeal is similar to that of John F. Kennedy with US or Winston Churchill in Britain, but few
politicians in this times have achieved his level of admiration, said Tom Lodge, head of the political science
department of the University of the Witwatersrand.
“Sometimes it isn’t completely appreciated what a skilled performer Mandela has been throughout his political
career. He’s a very, very clever man.” However, he is far from perfect.
Most articles for his birthday, which appeared in every major South African newspaper on the day, brief
mentioned that Mandela did have his shortcomings.

Mandela.”

At a primary school in a small town in the east of South Carolina, second-grade teachers Garneau and Lynne are convinced that separating elementary-age boys and girls produces immediate academic improvement in both genders(性別).
David Chadwell, South Carolina’s expert of single gender education says, “Boys and girls learn, hear and respond to their surroundings differently. We can teach boys and girls based on what we now know.”
Male and female eyes are not organized in the same way, he explains. The organization of the male eye makes it sensitive to motion and direction.“Boys understand the world as objects moving through space,” he says.
The male eye is also drawn to cooler colors like silver and black. It’s no accident that boys tend to create pictures of moving objects instead of drawing the happy colorful family, like girls do in their class.
The female eye, on the other hand, is drawn to warmer colors like red, yellow and orange. To attract girls, Chadwell says, the teacher doesn’t need to move as much as in boy’s class.Using descriptive phrases and lots of colors in presentations or on the blackboard gets their attention.
Boys and girls also hear differently.“When someone speaks in a loud tone, girls understand it as yelling,” Chadwell says.“They think you’re mad and can shut down.” Girls are more sensitive to sounds. He advises girls’ teachers to watch the tone of their voices.Boys’ teachers should sound more forceful, even excited.
A boy’s nervous system causes him to be more cautious when he is standing, moving, and the room temperature is around 69 degrees Fahrenheit.Stress in boys, he says, tends to increase blood flow to their brains, a process that helps them stay focused.Girls are more focused when seated in a warmer room around 75 degrees Fahrenheit.Girls also respond to stress differently. When exposed to threat and conflict, blood goes to their guts(腸道), leaving them feeling nervous or anxious.
These differences can be applied in the classroom, Chadwell adds.“Single gender programs are about making the best use of the learning.”
1.What is David Chadwell’s attitude toward separating elementary-age boys and girls while learning?
A.Supportive B.Worried
C.Concerned D.Uninterested
2.To engage boy in a class, the teacher ______.
A.must have a moving object in this hand
B.needs to wear clothes in warm color
C.has to speak politely
D.had better move constantly while teaching
3.Which of the following shows the organization of the passage?
( ?= Paragraph 1 ?= Paragraph 2 ?= Paragraph 3 …... ?= Paragraph 8 )
4.Which of the following students is most likely to be focused?
A.A boy sitting in a warm room
B.A standing boy who is faced with stress
C.A girl standing in a cold room
