My parents ran a small restaurant in Seattle. It was open twenty-four hours a day, six days a week. And my first real job, when I was six years old, was   31  the diners’ shoes. My father had done it when he was young, so he taught me  32  to do it well, telling me to  33  to shine the shoes again if the customer wasn’t  34 .
I was proud of working in the restaurant   35  I was also working for the good of the family. But my father   36  said that I had to meet certain standards(標(biāo)準(zhǔn)) to be part of the team. I   37  to be on time, hard-working, and polite to the  38 . I was    39  paid for the work I did at the restaurant. One day I made the mistake of suggesting to Dad that he  40   give me $10 a week. He said, “OK. How about you paying me for three meals a day you have here? And for the times you bring in your friends  41  free soft drinks?” He   42  the amount of money I owed him, about $40 a week.
I remember returning to Seattle after being  43  in the US Army for about two years. I had just been promoted(升職) to Captain at that time. And full of pride, I walked into my parents’ restaurant, but the   44  thing Dad said was, “How about your   45  up tonight?” I couldn’t  46  my ears! I am an officer in the Army! But   47  didn’t matter. As far as Dad was concerned, I was just  48  member of the team. I reached for the mop(拖把).Working for Dad has taught me that the devotion(奉獻(xiàn)) to a  49  is above all. It has nothing to do with  50  that team is for a family restaurant or the US Army.

I lost my sight when I was four years old by falling off a box car in a freight yard in City and landing on my head. Now I am thirty two. I can slightly remember the brightness of sunshine and what color red is .It would be wonderful to see again , but a calamity (災(zāi)難)can do strange things to people .It occurred to me the other day that I might not have come to love life as I do if I hadn’t been blind . I believe in life now.I am not so sure that I would have believed in it so deeply , otherwise. I don’t mean that would prefer to go without my eyes . I simply mean that Atlantic the loss of them made me appreciate the more what I had left .
Life, I believe, asks a continuous series of adjustments to reality. The more readily a person is able to make these adjustments, the more meaningful his own private world becomes. The adjustment is never easy. I was totally confused and afraid. But I was lucky. My parents and my teachers saw something in me--a potential to live, you might call it--which I didn't see, and they made me want to fight it out with blindness.
The hardest lesson I had to learn was to believe in myself. That was basic. If I hadn't been able to do that, I would have collapsed and become a chair rocker on the front porch for the rest of my life. When I say belief in myself I am not talking about simply the kind of self confidence that helps me down an unfamiliar staircase alone. That is part of it. But I mean something bigger than that: an assurance that I am, despite imperfections, a real, positive person; that somewhere in the sweeping, intricate(錯(cuò)綜復(fù)雜的) pattern of people there is a special place where I can make myself fit.
It took me years to discover and strengthen this assurance. It had to start with the simplest things. Once a man gave me an indoor baseball. I thought he was making fun of me and I was hurt. "I can't use this." I said. "Take it with you," he urged me, "and roll it around." The words stuck in my head. "Roll it around! "By rolling the ball I could hear where it went. This gave me an idea how to achieve a goal I had thought impossible: playing baseball. At Philadelphia's Overbrook School for the Blind I invented a successful variation of baseball. We called it ground ball.
All my life I have set ahead of me a series of goals and then tried to reach them, one at a time. I had to learn my limitations. It was no good trying for something that I knew at the start was wildly out of reach because that only invited the bitterness of failure. I would fail sometimes anyway but on the average I made progress.

Throughout this long, tense election, everyone has focused on the presidential candidates and how they’ll change America. Rightly so, but selfishly, I’m more fascinated by Michelle Obama and what she might be able to do, not just for this country, but for me as an African-American woman. As the potential First Lady, she would have the world’s attention. And that means that for the first time people will have a chance to get up close and personal with the type of African-American woman they so rarely see.
Usually, the lives of black women go largely unexamined. The prevailing theory seems to be that we’re all hot-tempered single mothers who can’t keep a man. Even in the world of make-believe, black women still can’t escape the stereotype of being eye-rolling, oversexed females raised by our never-married, alcoholic (酗酒的) mothers.
These images have helped define the way all women are viewed, including Michelle Obama. Before she ever gets the chance to commit to a cause, charity or foundation as First Lady, her most urgent and perhaps most complicated duty may be simple to be herself.
It won’t be easy. Because few mainstream publications have done in-depth features on regular African-American women, little is known about who we are, what we think and what we face on a regular basis. For better or worse, Michelle will represent us all.
Just as she will have her critics, she will also have millions of fans who usually have little interest in the First Lady. Many African-American blogs have written about what they’d like to see Michelle bring to the White House—mainly showing the world that a black woman can support her man and raise a strong black family. Michelle will have to work to please everyone—an impossible task. But for many African-American women like me, just a little of her poise (沉著), confidence and intelligence will go a long way in changing an image that’s been around for far too long.
小題1:Why does Michelle Obama hold a strong fascination for the author?
A.She serves as a role model for African women.
B.She possesses many admirable qualities becoming a First Lady.
C.She will present to the world a new image of African-American women.
D.She will pay closer attention to the interests of African-American women.
小題2:What is the common stereotype of African-American women according to the author?
A.They are victims of violence.
B.They are of an inferior violence.
C.They use quite a lot of body language.
D.They live on charity and social welfare.
小題3:What do many African-Americans write about in their blogs?
A.Whether Michelle can live up to the high expectations of her fans.
B.How Michelle should behave as a public figure.
C.How proud they are to have a black woman in the White House.
D.What Michelle should do as wife and mother in the White House.
小題4:What does the author say about Michelle Obama as a First Lady?
A.However many fans she has, she should remain modest,
B.She shouldn’t disappoint the African-American community.
C.However hard she tries, she can’t expect to please everybody.
D.She will give priority to African-American women’s concerns.
小題5:What do many African-American women hope Michelle Obama will do?
A.Help change the prevailing view about black women.
B.Help her husband in the task of changing America.
C.Outshine previous First Lady.
D.Fully display her fine qualities.

科目:高中英語 來源:不詳 題型:閱讀理解

I wasn’t surprised when I read that actress Helen Hunt recently stated that she would never allow her young daughter to become a child star. Ms Hunt is the daughter of a Hollywood technical director, and grew up in Hollywood. Now in her late 40s, she started acting and modeling when she was eight and has probably seen a lot over those years in show business.
She has had a successful career. She earned four Golden Globes and four Emmys. She also attained the top honor of her profession when she won the Best Actress Academy Award for her role in the 1992 movie, As Good As It Gets. Given those accolades, Ms Hunt is successful. There is no doubt that her early experiences as a child star prepared her for what has been an outstanding adult career. Given those achievements, why would this star declare she’ll never allow her daughter, now at the age of six, to follow in her footsteps?
Everyone familiar with the entertainment scene is aware of the reasons for her attitude. Recent tabloid (小報(bào)) news headlines featuring the troubles of former child stars, among them Lindsay Lohan, Britney Spears and the late Gary Coleman, may answer the question. Although Ms Hunt managed to become a successful grown-up star, she apparently believes she’s an exception.
What Ms Hunt may be suggesting is that many very young stars go through unnatural childhoods on movie and TV sets. While they’re earning big incomes, they’re so pampered (縱容) by directors and praised by fans; they may get false impressions that their lives will always be that way. Then, within a few years, when faced with reality, they’re hurt and confused. After all the overwhelming affection, they find they can’t deal with the problems. That’s often when drugs and alcohol take over their lives.
Helen Hunt has some other reasons why she doesn’t want her daughter to be in the entertainment business. Many child stars can never make a successful transition to meaningful adulthood. However, as with many Hollywood movies, I believe there are both good and bad scenes about how it can be played out in real life.
小題1:According to the passage, Ms Hunt _________.
A.started acting and modeling when she was a little girl
B.has been acting for about 30 years
C.is the daughter of a famous actor
D.started singing when she was eight
小題2:The underlined word “accolades” in Paragraph 2 probably means “_________”.
A.difficultiesB.a(chǎn)wardsC.salariesD.opinions
小題3:The author thinks Helen Hunt’s success is mainly due to _________.
A.her hard workB.the help of a technicaldirector
C.her experiences as a child starD.her talent and good luck
小題4:Helen Hunt wouldn’t allow her daughter to become a child star because she thinks _________.
A.child stars often take drugs and alcohol
B.being a child star may ruin her future
C.child stars aren’t able to solve their problems
D.it is difficult to succeed as a child actor
小題5:From the passage we can conclude that _________.
A.few child stars will succeed in the future
B.there is no way to save the entertainment business
C.the author has a different opinion about child stars
D.meaningful adulthood only belongs to non-child stars

Living in South Africa, I had always taken the wildlife pretty much for granted. Not to say that we were surrounded by it, but the accessibility of game parks and wildlife sanctuaries(避難所,庇護(hù)所) always made it seem like a natural part of the environment. For this reason, I suppose that the way my European friends used to talk to me, wasn’t so strange after all. They would ask me what I thought at the time were really silly questions which got on my nerves. They’d say things like ‘Do you have a pet baboon?’ or ‘Do you travel to school by elephant?’.
When Amanda, a friend of mine who was visiting from England, invited me to join her and a group of friends on a wildlife expedition, I was not filled with enthusiasm. However, from the moment we entered the gates of the Zaluzi game reserve, I knew that this was not going to be anything like I had expected. We had been traveling along the National Road when, suddenly, we turned onto a dirt track which seemed to be hidden in the middle of nowhere. Amazingly, the scenery changed dramatically. The civilized environment took on a wild, chaotic(混沌的;一片混亂的) aspect and continued to do so as we walked deeper into the bush.
After having a good night’s sleep at one of the reserve’s bungalows, we were woken at the crack of dawn. After a quick breakfast we piled into a jeep and set off. Our guide assured us that the early start was necessary in order to have the best chance of seeing what was really worthwhile. Armed with just a thermos of coffee, we set out towards the shore of a small lake where it was expected that we could see that animals that used it as their morning watering hole.
On the way to our destination, we topped a hill and there, against the emerging morning light, were a group of animals.  It was a stunning sight. As we moved closer, the animals did not appear to be alarmed by our presence. Pet baboons aside, I had never before come within such close range of a pride of lions. It did cross my mind, however, that we might be in a certain amount of danger. When I asked Timothy, our game ranger, if we were actually in any danger, he replied straightforwardly that one is never entirely safe in the bush, but his knowledge and experience allowed him to anticipate any danger with reasonable accuracy.
However, the following day there was some cause for alarm. Not having started out so early, we missed the sightings of the day before. We decided to drive around for a while, hoping to come across something of interest. Suddenly our tracker perched up on the back of our vehicle, signaled to the driver to halt and at the same moment I realized that this time we had stumbled right into a pride of lions. The driver promptly turned off the engine and in a low voice warned us to remain seated and not to make any abrupt movements. The lions were picking at what looked like the remains of a zebra. Timothy, later told us how much to our advantage this was. Had their bellies not been full, their reaction to us would surely have been otherwise. As the nearest lion was less than three meters away from the jeep, I considered that we had been very lucky indeed.
All in all, it was a wonderful trip. Our near miss with the lions was without a doubt the highlight, but what it taught me yet again was how easy it is to be indifferent to our surroundings and not to have a full appreciation of the beauty around us.
