The appeal of advertising to buying motives can have both negative and positive effects. Consumers may be convinced to buy a product of poor quality or high price because of an advertisement. For example, some advertisers have appealed to people’s desire for better fuel economy for their cars by advertising automotive products that improve gasoline mileage. Some of the products work. Others are worthless and a waste of consumers’ money.

Sometimes advertising is intentionally misleading. A few years ago a brand of

bread was offered to dieters (節(jié)食者) with the message that there were fewer calories in every slice. It turned out that the bread was not dietetic (適合于節(jié)食的), but just regular bread. There were fewer calories because it was sliced very thin, but there were the same number of calories in every loaf.

On the positive side, emotional appeals may respond to a consumer’s real concerns. Consider fire insurance. Fire insurance may be sold by appealing to fear of loss. But fear of loss is the real reason for fire insurance. The security of knowing that property is protected by insurance makes the purchase of fire insurance a worthwhile investment for most people. If consumers consider the quality of the insurance plans as well as the message in the ads, they will benefit from the advertising.

Each consumer must evaluate her or his own situation. Are the benefits of the product important enough to justify buying it? Advertising is intended to appeal to consumers, but it does not force them to buy the product. Consumers still control the final buying decision.

56. Advertising can persuade the consumer to buy worthless products by _________.

  A. stressing their high quality

  B. convincing him of their low price

  C. maintaining a balance between quality and price

  D. appealing to his buying motives

57. The reason why the bread advertisement is misleading is that ________.

  A. thin slices of bread could contain more calories

  B. the loaf was cut into regular slices

  C. the bread was not genuine bread

  D. the total number of calories in the loaf remained the same

58. The passage tells us that _______.

  A. sometimes advertisements really sell what the consumer needs

  B. advertisements occasionally force consumers into buying things they don’t need

  C. the buying motives of consumers are controlled by advertisements

  D. fire insurance is seldom a worthwhile investment

59. It can be inferred from the passage that a smart consumer should ________.

  A. think carefully about the benefits described in the advertisements

  B. guard against the deceiving nature of advertisements

  C. be familiar with various advertising strategies

  D. avoid buying products that have strong emotional appeal

60. The passage is mainly about ________.

  A. how to make a wise buying decision

  B. ways to protect the interests of the consumer

  C. the positive and negative aspects of advertising

  D. the function of advertisements in promoting sales

There is a real joke. When some guys were talking heatedly about “F4”in the living room, the father came in and interrupted: “Which is more powerful, F-4 or F-16?” The boys burst into laughter.Obviously, the father took F4 for a type of fighter plane. He didn’t know that F4 is a pop group extremely popular among young people these two years.

Then what does the “F” in  F4 stand for? Fever or fortune? It is certainly not “failure” for sure! We look at the success and appeal of these 4 stars from the popular drama Meteor Garden 《流星花園》,who took the island by storm during their brief visit here. For sure, they look good. Each of them being 1.80 meters tall, they are all very popular throughout the world.

But what exactly is the appeal of these 4 young guys? Nobody can tell.Maybe some of young students are just following the fashion. Then why is Meteor Garden stopped from being shown on TV in China? Well, some young people just could not agree. In fact, students are not too young to tell black from white. And they must be clear that every coin has two sides. While they find interest in F4, they must be clear what bad that drama will do us.

Today, almost everyone has heard of Harry Potter. The books detailing his experiences at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry have aroused passion, creativity, and interest in reading throughout the world.

But have you ever considered why you are a fan of the Harry Potter series?

JK Rowling has created a list of characters and an environment for them to inhabit that appeals to both adults and children.

The fantasy aspect of the wizarding world expands the imagination, and takes the mind to new and exciting places. Anything could happen there. Her stories contain parts of the believable and unbelievable, changing the predictability that readers commonly come across and bear in fiction.

The main theme of the series, including good versus evil, prejudice, love, death, sacrifice, friendship and loyalty, in actuality contributes to the ever-lasting nature of the stories. At the same time, these themes remind us of classic literature, offering mature readers tales that wear like a comfortable pair of shoes, while introducing younger readers to concepts they will meet throughout their lives.

Much of the appeal also comes from the characters. In each book, JK Rowling introduces and describes the characters in such a way that we wonder not only about their futures, but also about their pasts. Even supporting characters are suddenly more than just extras in the background. And what of Harry Potter himself? We care about Harry, because we watch him grow from an innocent boy to a powerful wizard. We see him as both Hero and Victim. He experiences endless love and extreme pain, and as readers, we experience them with him.

科目:高中英語(yǔ) 來(lái)源:2012屆度山東省德州市高三上學(xué)期期中聯(lián)考英語(yǔ)題 題型:閱讀理解

Some people believe that international sports create goodwill between the nations and that if countries play games together they will learn to live together. Others say that the opposite is true: that international competitions encourage false national pride and lead to misunderstanding and hatred. There is probably some truth in both arguments, but in recent years the Olympic Games have done little to support the view that sports encourage international brotherhood. Not only was there the tragic incident involving the murder of athletes, but the Games were also ruined by lesser incidents caused mainly by minor national competitions.

One country received its second-place medals with visible indignation(憤慨)after a hockey final. There had been noisy scenes at the end of the hockey match, the loser’s objection to the final decision. They were sure that one of their goals should not have been disallowed and that their opponents’ victory was unfair. Their manager was very angry and he said, “This wasn’t hockey. Hockey and the International Hockey Federation are finished.” The president of the Federation said later that such behavior could result in the suspension(停賽)of the team for at least three years.

The American basketball team announced that they would not give up the first place to Russia, after a disputable end to their competition. The game had ended in disturbance. It was thought at first that the United States had won, by a single point, but it was announced that there were three seconds still to play. A Russian player popped the ball into the basket. It was the first time the USA had ever lost an Olympic basketball match. An appeal jury discussed the matter for four and a half hours before announcing that the result would stand. The American players then voted not to receive the silver medals.

Incidents of this kind will continue as long as sports are played competitively rather than for the love of the game. The suggestion that athletes should compete as individuals, or in non-national teams, might be too much to hope for. But in the present organization of the Olympics there is far too much that encourages aggressive patriotism(愛國(guó)主義).

1.According to the author, recent Olympic Games have ________.

A.caused national pride for athletes

B.created goodwill between the nations

C.hardly showed any international friendship

D.led to less misunderstanding between countries

2.What did the manager mean by saying “Hockey and the International Hockey Federation are finished”?

A.His team would no longer take part in international games.

B.There should be no hockey matches organized by the Federation.

C.Hockey and the Federation are both ruined by the unfair decisions.

D.The International Hockey Federation should be dismissed forever.

3.By taking the basketball game for example, the author wants to prove that ________.

A.too much patriotism was displayed in the games

B.the announcement to prolong the match was wrong

C.the appeal jury was too hesitant in making the decision

D.the team was right in refusing to accept the silver medals

4.What conclusion can be drawn from the passage?

A.Sports should be played for the love of one’s nation.

B.Unfair decisions are common in the Olympic Games.

C.International competitions will lead to misunderstanding.

D.The organization for the Olympic Games must be reformed.
