Whether you’ve been in college or you’re looking forward to going to university in the future, you and your family likely spend some time worrying about the cost of your college education. ____1.____ However, that will pay off for years to come. Earning scholarships is a great way to help you. The Financial Aid Office at Illinois State helps students identify scholarship opportunities every day. Here is some advice to help you.

●____2.____

Have you asked your high school or community college financial aid office about scholarships at your school? Many schools have a list of several scholarships right there. ___3._____ Check with community organizations, banks and credit unions, and large employers who may offer scholarship opportunities in your area.

●Find your “hook”

____4._____ Your unique characteristics can help your scholarship applications stand out. Pay special attention to awards that mention your best qualities, whether that’s academic achievements, leadership, community service, or something less common. Think about why a donor wants to assist you in paying for your education. Most scholarship providers want to encourage a particular behavior. Companies may want to attract future employees.

●Develop a routine

Every scholarship is different in terms of when you can apply, what you need to turn in, when the winner is announced, and how the money is given to you. _____5.____ There isn’t a single application or search engine that allows you to find and apply for everything. Visit the website for the Office of Student Financial Aid for lists of scholarship opportunities. Go through the lists to find the ones that match you best and keep track of when you can apply for them.

A. While you’re searching, consider what makes you special as a student.

B. Typically, scholarship applications open in the late fall or early spring for the next school year’s awards, but that also varies depending on the donors.

C. There is no doubt that college education is a necessary step to get yourselves prepared for the future.

D. Local awards can often be easier to get as the application pools are smaller and less competitive.

E. Begin in your own backyard.

F. It’s no secret that college is one of the biggest.

The TV science-fiction series Star Trek no longer looked far-fetched (牽強的) as four men and four women in black space-suits locked themselves into a giant hi-tech greenhouse, known as a ‘biosphere’, in the Arizona desert yesterday for a two-year study of the environment.

As dawn broke over the Santa Catalina mountains, the eight waved goodbye to television cameras. Edward Ross, their multibillionaire sponsor from a Texas oil family, closed the door of the $150 million structure, with its mini-ocean, marsh, desert, savanna, rain-forest and 3,800 plant and animal species designed to allow the team to recreate Earth and its ecosystems.

The so-called Biosphere 2 is the latest of a dozen environmental projects started by the self-titled ‘ecopreneur’. The project’s main aim is to set up a self-sustaining community for possible use in a spaceship or on another planet. The crew members must plant, harvest and process their food on a half-acre farm in the seven-storey glass and metal structure, while conducting a series of experiments.

‘We will be custodians (監(jiān)護人) of our new little world,’ said Abigail Mayer, aged 31, a US marine biologist on the team, her voice choking with emotion. ‘It is a brave new step.’ Many scientists, however, are more than skeptical. They point out that the largest closed ecosystem which survived more than a few days was smaller than a football. It was developed at the University of Miami and contained only shrimp, algae and other micro-organisms.

Critics have also accused Mr. Ross of being more interested in producing a profitable theme park than in carrying out serious scientific research. Hundreds of tourists visited the site daily in the summer before it was occupied by the team. They paid $9.95 to enter and all stopped at the souvenir shop.

1.What’s the location of the project?

A. Texas.

B. University of Miami.

C. Arizona desert.

D. The space.

2.What can we infer from the passage?

A. There is a scene in Star Trek where four men and four women locked themselves into giant greenhouse.

B. All the species of plants and animals on the Earth were brought into the greenhouse.

C. Mr. Ross made tourists stop at the souvenir shop to gain profits.

D. Many scientists are doubtful whether this system can last long enough.

3.What’s the author’s attitude towards the project?

A. Critical.B. Neutral.C. Skeptical.D. Supportive.

I was going to Paris, which I’d always wanted to see. But now I was frightened to travel alone. I arrived at the train station in Paris. I hadn’t spoken my college French for twenty years. On my first metro ride, I came across an incompetent(不勝任的) thief. I just stared at him, and he stopped his hand from my purse and disappeared into the crowd. Somewhere in this confusing city was my hotel hidden, but the directions suddenly weren’t easy to find. When I finally found the hotel, my heart was beating heavily, and I was sweating like a basketball player. I couldn’t stay. Could I? The wallpaper looked like it had been through a fire. The bathroom was downstairs, and the window looked out onto the brick wall of another building. Welcome to Paris. I sincerely wanted to die. I missed my friends. I was entering my third week away from home and my kids, and I had arrived in the most romantic city in the world, alone, lonely and frightened.

The most important thing I did in Paris happened at that moment. I knew that if I didn’t go out, right then, and find a place to have dinner, I would hide in this small room my entire time in Paris. I might never learn to enjoy the world as a single individual. So I went out. Evening in Paris was light and pleasant. I walked along a path, listening to birds sing, watching children float toy boats in a huge fountain. No one seemed to be in a hurry. Paris was beautiful. And I was here alone and suddenly not lonely. My sense of accomplishment overcoming my fear and weakness had left me feeling free. I wore out two pairs of shoes during my week’s stay in Paris. I did everything there was to do, and it was the greatest week of my European vacation. I returned home, becoming a believer in the power of traveling alone. Now when I meet difficulties I just say to myself, “If I can go to Paris, I can go anywhere.”

1.What happened on my first metro ride?

A. I came across a skillful thief.

B. I bravely caught a thief trying to steal.

C. The thief successfully stole my purse.

D. I scared away a thief trying to steal.

2.The room in the hotel where I lived ________.

A. had just gone through a big fire

B. was in very poor conditions

C. had a good sight through the window

D. was very small and untidy

3.The lifestyle of French people can be considered as ________.

A. relaxedB. rushedC. anxiousD. aggressive

A. the power of being independent

D. the power of becoming optimistic

The weather is getting hotter. You are thirsty playing basketball or riding home from school. A cold drink may be just the thing. But be careful what you are drinking. Something that looks cool may not be good for your health. There are plenty of “energy drinks” on the market. Most of them have beautiful colors and cool names. The lists on them tell you they are helpful to your health. Sounds great!

But after a careful check you may find that most energy drinks have lots of caffeine(咖啡堿)in them. These drinks are especially aimed at young people, students, busy people and sports players. Makers sometimes say their drinks make you better at sports and can keep you awake. But be careful not to drink too much. Caffeine makes your heart beat fast.
