Children’s Books:Hawking’s fact and fiction

George F.R.Ellis & Ruby

BOOK REVIEWED-George’s Secret Key to the Universe

by Lucy & Stephen Hawking

Stephen Hawking’s book A Brief History of Time was a huge commercial success. Its achievements in bringing difficult scientific ideas to a wide audience are not so clear. Now the distinguished physicist has teamed up with his daughter Lucy to produce a children’s book designed to communicate contemporary physics. Will it capture the attention of young minds and teach them some real science?Or will it be boring and over the heads of the prospective readers?

George’s Secret Key to the Universe is an adventure story complete with villains(反面人物)and hero and is illustrated with enjoyable line-drawings.It involves a lost pig, a humorously portrayed(描寫(xiě))intelligent computer, school bullies and a trip through the Solar System.Didactic discussions on aspects of modern physics, such as supernova(超新星)explosions and black-hole physics are hung on this set-up.There are also fact boxes on physics and astronomy, and some photographs of astronomical phenomena:planets, comets, galaxies(星系)and so on.Overall, the book is a serious effort to convey facts and ideas in present day astronomy and astrophysics, within a science-fiction adventure story.

The mixture is great.Children love facts and adventure stories. The combination will catch their interest and keep them occupied for hours. After ten minutes of leafing through the book, my granddaughter Ruby was deeply absorbed and I had to promise to bring it back for her to read after I had completed my review.Like any educational tool, it will succeed for some and not for others.I suppose there should be more of the former.

Until quite recently, I knew only three things about my father: I knew his name, David S. Johnson, Jr. I knew he was an only child, and I’d been told he was killed on April 12, 1945, somewhere in Germany.
I used to come to visit my Granny. “Daddy David and his two friends were out in the fields, making sure the way was safe for the others to follow,” she told me. “All of a sudden there was an explosion. All three of them were killed.” Granny was looking down, stroking one thin hand with the other. Then there were no words but silence.
I began my search and collection for information about my father as my 50th birthday and the 50th anniversary of his death drew near. I was told that the explosion had blown him to bits and I had great difficulty collecting anything I could find about him bit by bit. Bits of information about his began falling into my hands, my mind and my heart. Longing to know my father kept me connected to him. It was time to transform my longing into knowledge.
Once upon a time he was alive, and my mother and father were deeply in love. They were married, and they had a child, my brother David. Then my father left for the war.
I was born in January 1945. On February 15 my father wrote me a letter of welcome. The letter is kept in my baby book, “Dear Susan, you have a very good family. Your dad is sort of a less able person. Your mother is the most wonderful person I’ve ever known. I’ve always marveled at my great good fortune to have her and been loved by her. If you follow her words and examples, you may expect to meet life in the best possible way, and your path will always be the right one. Your father, Dave.”
Black on white paper, the words are from my father. From them I grow into a person of loyalty and love. How I long for stories that will bring him to life!

Weighed down(壓得喘不過(guò)氣來(lái)) by study? Pushed to the limit by the fast pace of life? Frightened by the possible war? Well, you’re not alone. Men and women in France are seeking relief using the world’s best medicine─laughter.

In the past year, more than 25 laughter clubs have been set up across the country. People of all ages release their stress with an hour of group laughs. “People telephoned me and said they have forgotten what it is to laugh. They want to find a place where they can escape all their problems for a while. So they come,” said 40-year-old Jocelyn Le Moan. She usually takes a class of around 60 people through a series of laughter techniques.

Her pupils range from teenagers to 70 years old, but most are middle-aged white collars seeking 60 minutes of relaxation at the end of a busy day.

Le Moan takes them through the “Lion Laugh” and the “Laugh Contest”, where participants “speak” to each other in different ways. And instead of talking, they break into fits of laughter. At the end there are 15 minutes of “meditation”(沉思),when they lie on their backs and let the laughs burst out of their mouths.

“I love it. It’s an experience that has changed my life. Through it I rediscovered the child’s laugh inside me,” said Romain Jourffroy, 24.

Like Jourffroy, many laughter club members find themselves changed into children again, and why not? The average preschooler laughs up to 400 times a day. The average adult only a sad seven to fifteen.

The physical benefits of laughter are already well-recognized. Doctors say the act of laughing releases good chemicals into the blood-stream, while the quick breathing that accompanies it helps massage(按摩)the digestive organs and strengthens the heart.

“A full hour is like having your insides go jogging! One finishes out of breath, but feels revitalized (產(chǎn)生新活力). And on top of that, you’ve had a laugh,” said doctor Alexisd Estaing.

And many participants in Paris also emphasize the psychological benefits. They believe that laughter is a way of making oneself feel more confident.

“Maybe it is because we are surrounded by so many troubles that we feel the need to keep laughing,” said Anne Maurigiano, a 29-year-old filmmaker.

1.      From the passage, we can conclude the following but __________.

       A. Jocelyn Le Moan is a teacher of the club.

       C. people always need some way to relax in life.

       D. laugh freely and everything goes well.

2.    The writer suggested that you should __________.

       A. have a good laugh after a busy day

       B. talk to each other about what troubles you

       C. learn series of laughter techniques

       D. take the world’s best medicine

3.      Which of the following is NOT included among the benefits of laughing ?

       A. It can make people rediscover their children’s laugh.

       B. It can release good chemical into blood-stream.

       C. It can make you feel self-confident.

       D. It can cure the illness of people.

4. What does the phrase “on the top of that ” mean?

       A. besides                                                       B. on the top of tiredness

C. above all                                                        D. on the top of your energy

For Senior 3 students, choosing which college to attend can be the most exciting and thrilling time in their entire school lives. This is also true for an American girl named Melanie in the film, College Road Trip, which was released in the US on March 7.

Melanie’s dad, James Porter, is the chief of police for a Chicago suburb. Incredibly security obsessed(困擾), he wants Melanie to attend nearby Northwestern University, where she’s already been accepted. But Melanie, 17, really wants to go to Georgetown in Washington, D.C., where she’s been wait-listed.

When she gets an unexpected interview, she decides to take a road trip with a few close female friends. Melanie believes it is her first step toward adulthood.

But despite the fact that this trip is “girls only”, James isn’t comfortable with the prospect of his little princess exploring the world without him. He wants to protect her.

James joins the girls and hopes he can convince her to go to Northwestern. While Melanie’s father only has the best of intentions, his presence leads to an endless series of comic encounters.

After following their faulty GPS device deep into the backwoods, James and Melanie discover her little brother and his pet pig have been hiding in the spare tire compartment(隔間). What should be a simple tire change results in the expensive car rolling down a mountain, forcing them to hike to a nearby hotel. There the pig ruins an outdoor wedding reception after eating an entire bag of coffee beans.

All these disasters add spice to their trip while along the way a father and a daughter finally get the chance to really talk to each other.

The film explores the parent-child relationship in a comic way: The discrepancy(不同) between how close James thinks he is to Melanie and how little he actually knows of her plans makes us laugh first and then think.

All parents, whether they have college students or not, can relate to the bittersweet realization that their kids are growing up. Like what Melanie and James have done in the film, we all can find the delicate balance between staying connected and letting go.

51.According to the passage, which of the following is TRUE?

A.It’s unclear whether Melanie could be accepted by Northwestern University.

B.Northwestern University isn’t so famous as the university in Washington D.C..

A.their car rolled down the mountain, ruining the wedding reception

B.a(chǎn) hotel was destroyed by Melanie’s brother and his pet pig

C.Melanie and her father got to understand each other better after so many encounters

D.the girls had to give up their trip because of the incidents on the way

53.What does the underlined word “released” mean?

A. set free                    B. known              C. shown               D. developed

So long as teachers fail to distinguish between teaching and learning, they will continue to undertake to do for children that which only children can do for themselves. Teaching children to read is not passing reading on to them. It is certainly not endless hours spent in activities about reading. Douglas insists that“ reading cannot be taught directly and schools should stop trying to do the impossible”.

Teaching and learning are two entirely different processes. They differ in kind and function. The function of teaching is to create the conditions and the climate that will make it possible for children to devise the most efficient system for teaching themselves to read. Teaching is also public activity. It can be seen and observed.

Learning to read involves all that each individual does to make sense of the world of printed language. Almost all of it is private, for learning is an occupation of the mind, and that process is not open to public scrutiny.

If teacher and learner roles are not interchangeable ,what then can be done through teaching that will aid the child in the quest(探索)for knowledge? Smith has one principal rule for all teaching instructions. “Make learning to read easy, which means making reading a meaningful, enjoyable and frequent experience for children. ”

When the roles of teacher and learner are seen for what they are, and when both teacher and learner fulfill them appropriately, then much of the pressure and feeling of failure for both is eliminated. Learning to read is made easier when teachers create an environment where children are given the opportunity to solve the problem of leaning to read by reading.

1.he problem with the reading course as mentioned in the first paragraph is that _______________.

  A. it is one of the most difficult school courses

  B. students spend endless hours in reading

  C. reading tasks are assigned with little guidance

  D. too much time is spent in teaching about reading

1.he teaching of reading will be successful if _______________.

  A. teachers can improve conditions at school for the students

  B. teachers can enable students to develop their own way of reading

  C. teachers can devise the most efficient system for reading

  D. teachers can make their teaching activities observable

3.The underlined word“ scrutiny” most probably means“______________”.

  A. inquiry B. observation

  C. control D. suspicion

4.According to the passage, learning to read will no longer be a difficult task when ______________.

  A. children become highly motivated

  B. teacher and learner roles are interchangeable

  C. teaching helps children in the search for knowledge

  D. reading enriches children’s experience

5.The main idea of the passage is that ______________.

  A. teachers should do as little as possible in helping students learn to read

  B. teachers should encourage students to read as widely as possible

  C. reading ability is something acquired rather than taught

  D. reading is more complicated that generally believed

Thailand’s giant pandas have finally produced a baby. Chiang Mai zoo director Thanapath said eight-year-old female Lin Hui gave birth to a baby panda weighing about 200 grams.

The pandas, Lin Hui and Chuang Chuang, the zoo’s star residents(居民), had shown no interest in reproducing the traditional way since they both arrived on a 10-year loan from China in 2003. The zoo workers’ effort of artificial insemination(人工授精) worked. The baby panda will officially belong to China but Thailand will raise it for about 24 months, Thanapath said.

Thanapath said Lin Hui is very protective of her child and won’t allow any officials to get close. “She holds the baby very carefully.” he said. “She knows how to be a mother even though she has never been one before.” The baby panda appears to be getting along well with its much larger mother.

The birth appeared on the front pages of many Thai newspapers, which carried photos of the baby which is so tiny that it can be held in the hands of a zoo keeper. Other pictures showed the mother Lin Hui gently holding her baby. Thanapath said, “It is great happiness to see the baby panda. We are so happy that we can breed(繁殖)a panda. Every worker at the zoo is proud and I think every Thai will be proud too.”

Breeding pandas is a common practice in China, where dozens are born each year. But it is a rare thing outside of the country. Giant pandas are among the world’s most endangered animals. Nearly 1,600 pandas are believed to survive in China and about 180 are being raised in zoos worldwide.
