The Hymnbook(贊美詩集)

I watched attentively as my little brother was caught in the act. He sat in the corner of the living room, a (an)  1   in one hand and my father’s hymnbook in the other. As my father walked into the room, my brother cowered(畏縮)slightly. He   2   that he had done something   3  . From a distance, I saw that he had opened my father’s brand-new book and scribbled(亂寫)across the length and width of the entire first page with a pen. Now staring at my father   4  , he and I both waited for his punishment.

My father picked up his treasured book, looked at it   5  , and then sat down without saying a word.Books were   6   to him; he was a clergyman(牧師)and the holder of several . For him, books were knowledge, and yet, he loved his   8  . What he did in the next few minutes was remarkable. Instead of punishing my brother, instead of   9  or yelling or shouting, he sat down, took the pen from my brother’s hand and then wrote in the book himself, alongside the   10   John had made:“John’s word 1959, aged two. How many times have I looked into your   11   face and into your warm, black eyes looking up at me and thanked God for the one who has now scribbled in my new hymnbook. You have made the   12   sacred(神圣的)as your brothers and sisters give so much to my life.” Wow, I thought:This is the   13   my father is giving?

From time to time I take a book down—not just a cheesy paperback(劣質(zhì)的簡易平裝書) but a(n)14   book that I know I will have for many years to come-and I give it to one of my children to   15   or write their names in. And as I look at their   16  , I think about my 17  , and how he taught me about what really   18   in life:people, not objects; tolerance, not judgment; and love which is at the very heart of a(n)  19  . I think about these things, and I 20  . And I whisper, “Thank you, Dad.”
