Do you find getting up in the morning so difficult that it’s painful? This might be called laziness, but Dr. Kleitman has a new explanation. He has proved that everyone has a daily energy cycle.
During the hours when you labor through your work you may say that you’re “hot”. That’s true. The time of day when you feel the most energetic is when your cycle of body temperature is at its peak. For some people the peak comes during the forenoon. For others it comes in the afternoon or evening. No one has discovered why this is so, but it leads to such familiar monologues (自言自語(yǔ)) as John talks to himself: “Get up, John! You’ll be late for work again!” The possible explanation for the trouble is that John is at his temperature-and-energy peak in the evening. Much family quarrelling ends when husbands and wives realize what these energy cycles mean, and which cycle each member of the family has.
You can’t change your energy cycle, but you can learn to make your life fit it better. Habit can help, Dr. Kleitman believes. Maybe you’re sleepy in the evening but feel you must stay up late anyway. Adjust your cycle to some extent by staying up later than you want to. If your energy is low in the morning but you have an important job to do early in the day, rise before your usual hour. This won’t change your cycle, but you’ll get up steam (打起精神) and work better at your low point.
Begin with a slow start which saves your energy. Get up with a slow yawn and stretch. Sit on the edge of the bed a minute before putting your feet on the floor. Avoid the troublesome search for clean clothes by laying them out the night before. Whenever possible, do usual work in the afternoon and spend time doing important work for your high peak hours.
1.According to Dr. Kleitman if you don’t want to get up in the morning ____________.
A. you must be a lazy person
B. you must catch a cold
C. your energy cycle must be low
D. you should stay in bed
2.Which of the following may lead to family quarrels according to the passage?
A. A change in a family member’s energy cycle.
B. Familiar monologues.
C. Unawareness of energy cycles.
D. Attempts to control the energy cycle of other family members.
3.If one wants to work better at his low point in the morning, he should ____________.
A. change his energy cycle
B. go to bed earlier
C. overcome his laziness
D. get up earlier than usual
4.You are advised to rise with a yawn and stretch because it will _________________.
A. help you to control your temper early in the day
B. help to keep your energy for the day’s work
C. enable you to concentrate on your routine work
D. keep your energy cycle under control all day

At one time it was the dream of many little girls to become a nurse. Today, however, America is facing its worst nurse shortage since World War I. Recently about 2, 000, 000 nurses are needed and 60 percent of all hospitals in the US have shortages large enough to threaten the quality of care provided. The demand for nurses spreads widely throughout the nursing field.
What has become of these women in white? The answer lies in not one but several causes. One possibility is the fact that women have greater career options(職業(yè)選擇). In the past, women who chose to work outside the home had two basic choices: nursing or teaching. Today, more women than ever are in the work force, but their options have greatly increased. There are women doctors, lawyers, firefighters and police officers. In fact, women today are found in nearly every field of work. Nursing has been left behind, as women move on to jobs with higher pay and greater status(地位). A woman or man in the nursing field is often looked down upon as “merely a nurse”. Teachers may be also at fault. Many high school students are actually being persuaded to keep away from nursing, told by teachers that they are “too bright to be a nurse”.
Americans are living longer than ever and requiring more medical attention. In fact, the number of elderly patients has almost doubled in the past twenty years. Obviously a larger population requires more nurses. AIDS and other diseases have caused more and more people to need nursing care. Usually fatal diseases mean long drawn-out hospital stay, that is to say, more nurses are needed to care for these patients. It is said that the demand for nurses will be doubled in the coming ten years.
1.What are the main factors that are responsible for the shortage of nurses in America?
A. Women are better educated and provided with more different jobs than men.
B. More women are clever enough to be doctors, lawyers and police officers.
C. Greater career options are offered for women and more patients require nurse care
D. There are more diseases and nurses are badly paid and looked down upon.
2.The passage tells us that high school teachers are to blame for______.
A. not mentioning the worst nurse shortage in the US
B. advising the students not to choose to be nurses
C. introducing jobs with higher pay and greater status to their students
D. not asking the government to raise the nurses’ payment
3.The author wrote this passage in order to ______.
A. describe the unequal treatment of women in the US
B. tell us women’s free choice of jobs today in America
C. draw people’s attention to the nursing shortage problem
D. call on more women to be nurses after graduating from high school
4.Which of the following is true according to the passage?
A. High school students think themselves too bright to be nurses.
B. Women in the US have greater career choice than in other countries.
C. Nursing used to be an ideal job for women in the US at one time.
D. 60 percent of hospitals in the world are faced with nurse shortage.

I have a friend who lives by a three-word philosophy (人生哲學(xué)): Seize the moment. Just possibly, she may be the wisest woman on this planet. Too many people put off something that brings them joy just because they haven’t thought about it, don’t have it on their schedule, don’t know it is coming or are too strict to depart from their routine.
I can’t count the times I called my sister and said, “How about going to lunch in half an hour?” She would gasp and stammer (結(jié)結(jié)巴巴地說(shuō)), “I can’t. I have clothes on the line. My hair is dirty. I wish I had known it yesterday, I had a late breakfast, and it looks like rain.” And my personal favorite response: “It’s just Monday.” She died a few years ago. We never did have lunch together. From then on, I’ve tried to be a little more flexible.
Life has a way of going faster as we get older. The days get shorter, and the list of promises made to ourselves gets longer. One morning, we awaken, and all have to show for our lives is repetition of “I’m going to” , “I plan on” and “Someday, when things are settled down a bit.”
When anyone calls my “seize the moment” friend, she is open to adventure and available for trips. She keeps an open mind on new ideas. Her enthusiasm for life is contagious. You talk with her for five minutes, and you’re ready to trade your bad feet for a pair of Rollerblades and skip an elevator for a bungee cord.
My lips have not touched ice cream in 10 years. I love ice cream. The other day, I stopped the car and bought a triple-decker. If my car had hit an iceberg on the way home, I would have died happily.
Now ... go on and have a nice day. Do something you WANT to … not something on your SHOULD DO list.

A. an argument B. an introduction

A. it is still likely that they can have lunch together some time later
B. it sounds most reasonable of all the excuses
C. it shows respect for the writer’s suggestion
D. it indicates the time when they can have lunch together
3.The underlined word “contagious” in the fourth paragraph means “________” .
A. appropriate B. influential
C. practical D. evident
4.What is the purpose of the writer by writing this passage?
A. To suggest how time flies in our life.
B. To persuade busy people to relax after work.
C. To advise people to keep their promise to ourselves.
D. To persuade readers to be flexible on their schedule for practical joy.

Imagination and fantasy can play an important role in achieving the things we fear. Children know this very well. Fred Epstein ,in his book If I Make It to Five, tells a story he heard from one of friends about Tom, a four-year-old boy with a cancer in his back bone. He came through several operations and a lot of pain by mastering his imagination.
Tom loved to pretend, and he particularly loved to play superheroes ,Dr. Epstein explained that it was actually a brilliant way for his young mind to handle the terrifying and painful life he led.
The day before his third trip to the operating room, Tom was terribly afraid. ”Maybe I could go as Superman ,”he whispered to his mom. Hearing this, the mother hesitated for a while. She had avoided buying the expensive costume(戲裝),finally she agreed.
The next day Tom appeared as the powerful Superman, showing off through the hospital halls and coolly waving his hand to the people greeting him along the way. And Tom, with the strength of his fantasy, successfully made it through the operation.
The power of imagination need not be reserved for children only. We all have the power to use our fantasies to attempt things we never thought possible, to go through those things that seem impossible, and to achieve what we never believed we could. Just as Dr. Epstein puts it ,”If you can dream it, you can do it”
It doesn‘t mean that you should dress as a superhero for your next job interview.
